  • Who's your favorite famous witch? Fun-loving Madame Mim? The Sinister Grand High Witch? It's so hard to pick. And that's the thing about witches: I believe they share a magic, unspoken bond with queer people.

Tiffany Aching, Nanny Ogg and, most of all, Granny Weatherwax. You can't find a witch simultaneously meaner or kinder than Granny. She's strong, tough as nails and would do anything to protect her home or a child in trouble. Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP) truly knew how to make a witch.

My favorite witches are Granny Weatherwax and her best friend Nanny Ogg from the Discworld series. Granny Weatherwax for being a tough, badass (the only protagonist in the series more powerful then her is Death, with the runner up challenger being Death's granddaughter), no-nonsense woman who despite wanting to be a Wicked Witch, will never the less do what is right and be the hero. And Nanny Ogg for being a boisterous, super friendly, crazy old lady, who can match Weatherwax and a great lover of fun, quaffing (like drinking but you spill more) and dirty jokes/songs.

It carries the same message. Don't be afraid of who you really are and embrace your powers! Life gets so much better when you do. That being said, i've got a few favorite witches: Endora, Penny Halliwell, Minerva McGonnagall, Hermione Granger, Bonnie Bennett, Regina Mills (The Evil Queen in Once Upon a Time), Wendy Beauchamp, Fiona Goode and Cordelia Foxx. *-*

I actually teach a university course about the history and witchcraft, which focuses on the label of "witch" as one that has historically been imposed (rather than adopted). The witch from into the woods popped into my head immediately. The audience watches the character go through several seemingly-unwitchlike experiences: recognizing her mistakes as a parental figure, losing a loved one, and struggling with the unjustified differentiations made between herself the rest of the cast. The line "I'm the witch, you're the world. / I'm the hitch - I'm what no one believes" is juxtaposed with the vices and wrongdoings of the other characters, shedding light on how the social implications of being a witch are affecting her.

Samantha Stevens is very dear to the heart of any gay boy coming into knowledge of who he is (and was) in the late 1960s. The gay appeal of the show is so easily apparent.
Here was a 'witch' who was living in a society that had very ugly preconceptions of how 'witches' looked and behaved, preconceptions that Samantha Stevens demolished with every episode. She was loving, warm, fair, humorous, intelligent and affectionate. But she also had to hide who she really was, both for the love of others and to live with a measure of peace.
The show additionally displayed that not all 'witches' are the same. While Endora may have been a pill of a mother-in-law even as a mortal, there was mischievous and spirited Uncle Arthur and Serena, neither of whom made any concessions to the 'mortal' world. The show made clear that even 'witches' aged and got faltering as in Aunt Clara, played by incomparable Marion Lorne, and needing gentle watching over and assistance. It was shown in Tabitha, that young 'witches' had to be cautioned that "we're living in a world that doesn't understand _our kind_."
Darrin's 'mortal' and Samantha's 'witch,' determined to make their 'mixed' marriage work, was a pre-Stonewall endorsement of tolerance and inclusiveness that was heartening when you weren't so sure you weren't the only gay person in the world.

I went to high school with Kristen Chenoweth, jus as a bit of trivia! Who knew?
My favorite witch-like characters came from a favorite childhood book, "The Wicked, Wicked Ladies in the Haunted House" by Mary Chase, the same author who brought us "Harvey." Like me, both were released in the 1960's and the former is full of magic and fantasy and strong women who defied their traditional roles, which appealed to me. The magical ladies didn't have the most redeeming qualities, but they were powerful. I also identified with the main character, a little girl who also struggled to be herself against a repressive society.
This book would make a wonderful film, especially with the special effects we have today. It's been out of print for a long while, I think, but worth searching for as a wonderful children's book, or, for me, a great time to take a trip to the past in more than one way...

The show, when it became necessary, found it could replace a Louise Tate, a Gladys Kravitz and even a Darrin. But it was wise enough to know, with the heart-breaking passing of Marion Lorne in May 1968, no substitute actress could ever fill the shoes of 'Aunt Clara.' Lorne's portrayal sent the clear message that, if you've got to get old, being amiably deranged was the way to wring enjoyment out it. :) I love her dearly too.

Who could not love Aunt Clara? Even as a small child watching the show, she was wonderful.
Nothing ever made me dislike Darren more than when he was cross at Aunt Clara. Not even for messing up with faltering magic, but just for being one of Samantha's relatives and showing up. To dislike her so intently was to have no soul. I was often surprised that Samantha herself didn't threaten to vaporize him herself if he yelled at her just one more time, but then my mother was always one to speak her mind, and my father would never have done such a thing to any of our relatives anyway.
I liked Uncle Arthur, too. He was great. I know that his humor would get old very quickly in person, but he was genuinely a great guy.

Ursula( I would have said Maleficent but she's a fairy, not a witch, though she is my all time favorite Villain). She's not the 'ideal' beauty other merfolk (and humans) seem to desire, yet she's also not an 'ugly' evil witch. She has curves and flaunts it. She has magic and she relishes in it. She uses other people's insecurities with themselves to hone her craft. Plus, she's already different from others, besides magic. Did you see any other merfolk with the bottom half of a squid? Only if you watched one episode of the animated series. She has arguably the best Disney villain song (though Hellfire is really badass) and when Pat Carrol described how she acted as Ursula, she was known for saying that Ursula was a Shakespearean drop-out working as a used car salesman.

+GabeYess I KNOW! It's really unexpected. I have a feeling some animators might have been a little exasperated with how few opportunities that movie presented for attractive female forms.

Young me definitely thanks those animators. I rewound that vhs way too many times to be subtle. And I wonder why my family "had a clue"!

Bavmorda, portrayed flawlessly by Jean Marsh, was the greatest evil queen ever in Willow, directed by Ron Howard. I mean, she spends an entire movie trying to kill a baby!

I guess I'd be Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service. She's awkward, insecure and isolates herself from others (like pushy boys and Mean Girls™). She can't brew potions or tell fortunes. All she can do is fly, and she can't even do that well, all she can really do is try her hardest. But at least she can talk to her cat. Goddamn I just depressed myself LMAO

    • @MattBaume
      @MattBaume  8 лет назад +1

+ToruKun1 Kiki is MARVELOUS. Have you ever compared the Japanese version to the English dub with Phil Hartman as the cat? They are SO DIFFERENT.

    • @ToruKun1
      @ToruKun1 8 лет назад +1

+Matt Baume I haven't watched the Japanese dub, but I do know in the original, Jiji has a "stereotypical" high-pitched mewling cat voice and he's not sardonic at all, more cautious and helpful than anything. I'm sure it completely changes the tone of the movie.

My favorite witches are Mary Sibley & Tituba from Salem and Nicole Kidman's character from Practical Magic. I also love Elizabeth (Rebecca Ferguson) and her mother (Janet McTeer) from the brilliant British mini-series, The White Queen. They were kinda witches.

Huh, now I know why I absolutely loved witches when I was about 9 or 10!
Witches I loved reading about as a child include Meg from the Meg and Mog series of books, and of course, all the characters in The Worst Witch. They were even more outcast than most outcasts - because not only were they witches, they sucked at being witches.
Other witches I read about include the main character of The little Broomstick, a girl who's bored out of her mind until she finds a magical broom and ends up going to a weird magic academy and freeing a whole bunch of creatures from enchanted prison, the characters in Eva Ibbotson's stories, in particular Which Witch, which has a great detail about two ordinary parents realising their son has magical powers and deciding to accept him and nurture his talent, an outback dwelling weird great aunt of a witch called Granny Enders in Witch in the Bush, and of course the Harry Potter series, which will always be wonderful.

Mine was always Maleficent, the original. Just so iconic, possibly the greatest entrance in cinema history and the calm reaction of "All these years they've been searching for a baby" dictated my personal sense of humor later in life (Just stating a piece of insanity perfectly deadpan, in my mind there is little funnier). She is easily the one witch in film who just makes me happy because she's unapologetic evil and has fun with it... then the new movie happened and holy crap what is even the hell with that thing.

Hmmm . . . I am fascinated by the powerful Baba Yaga. She lives alone in the forest in a traveling house (on chicken legs), she can help or hinder travelers, and if children bother her, she eats them. 🤷‍♂️
Honorable mention to Sir Terry Pratchett's witches of the Ramtops (hur hur!) and the Chalk, Wanda Maximoff (who has suffered *so much* tragedy!), and non-standard witch Eleven from "Stranger Things."

I've loved Maleficent and the Sanderson sisters all my life. I never want to have to choose just one witch because they're all amazing.
But I have a special love for real witches now. They don't fit the normal spooky lady with a book of hexes, but they're usually such lovely people who I feel don't get enough credit in the world.

As much as I love the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus, I grew up watching Bedknobs and Broomsticks countless times, with Angela Lansbury as apprentice witch Miss Eglantine Price. It left a major impression on me as a child and I've always been fond of Pagans because of it.
Though as an adult looking back, so many topics like the Star of Astaroth were so very much darker than I ever realized.

  • @shikishinobi

Maleficent has always been my favorite. She was not invited to the party (well, christening), and is excluded in general. That was me growing up until towards the end of High School. I was not liked, I was bullied, excluded or manipulated. I loved Maleficent's power and position because no one did her wrong without getting comeuppance, and they knew to treed lightly around her.
As an adult I channeled that (and being a witch) into making my life my own, and those who piss me off get what they deserve, their firstborn cursed. No, not really. Just told what to do.
As a side note; Ursula is actually based on the 70's drag queen 'Divine' (Harris Glenn Milstead). I thought you might find that interesting, because I thought you might have mentioned it.
