    .338 Lapua is no joke. It's a definite reach out and touch rig. Good friend of mine has a Vortex scope on his. I cracked one off at a 1,200 yard gong and hit it. His personal best is a 1,600 yard. Truly impressive 160 yards shy of a mile. And I'm willing to bet it has enough horsepower to reach past a mile

    I've got the Savage 111 Long Range Hunter in .338 Lapua. She shoots hand loaded 250gr Bergers into 1/4" groups at 100. If you shoot .338 Lapua, you really need to load .338 Lapua because factory ammo will cost you about $7 per shot. I used to load the Bergers for about .90c a shot, but it's over a dollar now... which is far better than $7 a pop for sure. With other bullets I'm still under a dollar each. That muzzle brake is highly effective though, the recoil is about like shooting 30.06 Sprg so it's not uncomfortable to shoot.

      Reloading is the solution to the cost of the rounds. I have a 110BA as well. Reloads average out to about $1.10 a round using Lapua brass, H110, and Nosler bullets. That still works out to be my most expensive rounds. 1 pound of powder is almost exactly 100 rounds.

    • @Reach41
      @Reach41 2 года назад

      @@ChristopherKnN I checked prices online, and found Lapua 300 grain with Scenars for around $8.50 per round. They are less expensive than 250 grain rounds, maybe a demand thing. I bought 100 rounds a couple years back and they were half that. Any problem with powder or bullet availability?

    • @ChristopherKnN
      @ChristopherKnN 2 года назад +2

      @@Reach41 I primarily do long range target shooting with it, so I try to stick with a consistent recipe. I wouldn’t worry about a suppressor on a 338LM the first shot puts enough heat into one you get a haze from there on out without serious cooling off time in between shots, stick to the brake and your barrel will last longer

    • @Nick-sx6jm
      @Nick-sx6jm 2 года назад +4

      Adding a suppressor will not affect barrel life. You will probably never burn a barrel on something like a 338 LM anyways as it would cost more than 10x what the rifle goes for new and who shoots 2k rounds of 338

    • @ancientrenegade9243
      @ancientrenegade9243 2 года назад +1

      @@Nick-sx6jm I've had mine 3 months and done 700 rounds already. It's only 7 trips to the range. Suppressors store heat that would normally exit the barrel and do add considerably to barrel wear. 338lm barrel life expectancy is around 1500rds.

    • @Nick-sx6jm
      @Nick-sx6jm 2 года назад +1

      @@ancientrenegade9243 If your sitting down and shooting a box of ammo through it quickly then maybe it would affect the muzzle end a bit more. Getting the barrel really hot is the worst thing you can do to a barrel though and if you shoot that it much then the best thing you can do it let it cool between shots. I have a 340 wby which is about identical with probably over 1k rounds on it and it still shoots as good as day 1. Apparently Finnish snipers get a rebarrel at around 4k rounds to keep military accuracy out to 1k yards so you should be fine putting 2k through it as long as its not abused.

Have mine going through my Ruger RPR and Vortex Strike Eagle (35mm tube) with Atlas bipod and Magpul monopod for a touch more adjustment. A quick way to adjust is once you shoot, move your lead sled until the cross hairs are on the the bullet hole. Then adjust the scope until the cross hairs are back on the bullseye. It's easy to do on a stable rest like a lead sled and you don't have to worry about counting clicks and going the wrong way.

    I had a Ruger # 1 re-barreled and reworked and chambered for 330 Dakota, The rifle would shoot lights out and I did hunt elk with it. In the end, it was just too heavy and too much recoil so when I paired down my collection, it went away and I kept a Sako 75 in 338 WM. I killed a bunch of moose with that rifle when I lived in Alaska. Oh, and 210 gr Barnes X bullets shot accurate and flat shooting. The same bullet shot well out of the Ruger # 1 too.

    On the topics of 338's, and because I know you're also a big fan of the 338WM, I thought I would mention the new 338 that just got SAAMI approval. I was checking on the specs on a Weatherby Mark V Hunter in 280AI and saw that Weatherby has released the 338RPM. I know the 6.5RPM is a screamer, not as fast as the 6.5x300, but the 6.5 RPM has intrigued me for awhile. I always thought there's something to it if Weatherby was willing to get away from it's iconic cartridge design. I've heard the 338RPM the ballistic twin the the 338WM, but I'm going to check out the numbers myself. Honestly, I'm hoping your mystery gun you can't tell us about until June is, in fact, a 338RPM. Also, if you can get your hands on one, I'd love to see how this 338LM compares to the Norma Magnums.

    Suggest that you do a 338lm in ballistic gel, 200 yards. That would be fun!

    I have the Savage 110 FCP in .338 Lapua. I like it, she'll beat you though. I haven't shot it much, ammo is crazy expensive for it. I got an SWFA 3-15x42mm FFP mil. For a budget target scope, I'm liking those SWFA scopes. The only draw back to them is lack of zero stop.

      Love the SWFA scopes I have a fixed 10x. I made plastic shims on my lathe that go inside the turret that act as a zero stop, works great.

    With total rifle support like you have couldn't you put your cross hair back on center after 1st shot then adjust scope to point of impact?

    I got nipped by a damn 23 gauge pin that went directly left of the box I was making and straight into my index finger. I know your pain, brother. Make sure you don't mess with and lemons or gas for a bit. I swear, the tiny holes like that hurt the most. 😆🤙🏾

    I need a new rig. I was thinking of getting something on this end of the spectrum. I want to get something that is kinda a "standardized round". It looks like either 338 lapua or something in the 308 house for me, based on what ammo I can find on island.

    Please 🙏 can U put the awesome statistics of the 30 Thompson which is basically a 308 creedmoor. It's not around cause they didn't bring up any good rifle's in that calibre.
