In defense of calorie labels. A lot of diets use calorie counting as a way to maintain a calorie deficit to help lose weight. To the average person they can look past it and not worry. To a calorie counter they get to enjoy a food without having to estimate on how much they're consuming.
Hang on, calorie information is useful for me when I feel like cutting back. If it's inaccurate then these companies should put more effort into making them accurate. Fair enough if companies don't want to provide such information but in that case I will be less inclined to eat there.
MrMasterDebate That's pretty presumptuous for a guy that obviously knows shit about nutrition. Carbohydrates have made America fat. Low-fat diets have driven the increase in Type 2 diabetes thanks to the FED low-fat recommendations based on ADM and corn industry efforts to sell high-fructose corn syrup. So, the Feds end up in bed with the corn farmers with the by-product of killing Americans. This is a thing called Corporatism. Fat does not cause obesity to the degree that sugars do. Apparently, some fats are better than others. I lost weight, without cutting calories, merely by shifting from sugars to fats, ceteris paribus.
I agree with companies listing caloric content of their food, but actually, a nutritional value label should be available too. If you buy candidate or packaged for, it has a label of nutritional values on the side so why not have restaurants do this also I figure out the basic nutritional value of all the food I eat and cook/prepare at home. You come to my house and I offer you something to eat and you ask, "Hey Molo, what is the nutritional content of this pork sandwich you gave me"? I can give you that information within a minute. I keep track of... Calories from Protein (1 gram of protein is 4 calories) Calories from Carbohydrates (1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories). Calories of fat (1 gram of fat/lipids is 9 calories). How much Vitamin... A, B's, C, D, E, K. How much... Sodium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, Calcium, Zinc and so on are contained in my homemade pizza, per slice or total pie, I figure that out from my recipe. It is so easy, even a Democrat could do it. Everyone should have a nutritional guide in their kitchen. Your diet is the most important daily activity you partake. After a while you won't have to look up the nutritional values of foods you prepare because you will start to remember them because most people will find that their diet isn't that diverse; everyone has food preferences. Most food has their nutritional values on the label, from canned fruits and vegetables, to mayonnaise and mustard/ketchup. For fresh foods, refer to your nutrition guide, which is always in your kitchen, or ask Google! Also, every kitchen should have a food scale, measure everything you put in your food. Never eat food you don't know the nutritional value of. Example, a tuna sandwich; 2 slices of bread, nutrition per serving is, usually 2 slices, on the side of the bag. 1 can of Tuna fish (I prefer tuna in vegetables oil), again, nutritional values are on the side of the can. 2 tablespoons of Mayonnaise, usually considered 2 servings, is on the side of the jar. Add everything up and record into your food diary so you can add up your total nutritional consumption for the day. And, if not listed, get your phone out and ask, "Hey Goggle? What is the nutritional value of Mayonnaise"? Your phone will reply, "The nutritional value of Mayonnaise is..." Again, this ain't rocket science, and even a Democrat could do this. But seem most people are dummer than a Democrat...Yuck!
Nutritional value labels are available. I worked at McDonald's and they have pamphlets with all nutritional values, the paper they put on trays have it on the back as well. All major fast food chains have it on their websites too. Its not hard to find this information.
They’ve told Americans what to eat since 1980 and look how “unrelatedly” the obesity level started to grow ever since. Basically, the sole reason of obesity is added sugar, 100%.
It affected me to change my eatting habit. While Yes I might order something High in Calorie. it could be a Cheat Meal or I plan on eatting less Calories the rest of the day. Doesnt mean all are following the calories like i am Now. but just more Caution on what im eatting and planning around the meals I eat.
That exactly what we have in Russia doing USSR. The government pays for your healthcare and they control what and how much you can eat and drink. And even decide how you can name your child. That is why Russian names are so limited.
I don't mind a list of ingredients or calories, but taxing costumers because they buy what government doesn't want them to is wrong. Informed decisions are ok but punishing me for a personal decision that effects only me would be wrong. This is what you get when you let government run healthcare, now they want to control what I eat.
I think the calorie counts are a good thing! Like +Molo Tulo above, I think there should be full nutritional information available too. Let me know what is in my food, but for the love of God please let me eat it.
"We're from the government and we're here to help you." Pay attention, this is what they all say. They can't help though, they don't have your best interest in mind while they are "helping".
What's the point of living a long life of you won't be happy doing so? If rather live 50 years living as I wish, doing what makes me happy, than living 200 years not being able to make my own choices and eating bland food.
But you won't be happy. You won't be able to move or jog or do any activity worth anything with friends or family. What life is that when every movement fucking hurts? And then hospitals have to take time away from other people for obesity that refused to put the soda down and wanna bitch that their lifestyle caught up with them.

I'm amazed that such an influential man in us politics has worse English than I do living outside any English speaking country. I like that everyone, independent of culture, can become a politician, but I mean at least you gotta speak it fluently.
If our tax dollars are going towards subsiding health care there should be dietary restrictions since we are all now responsible for the poor diet decisions of others. I prefer neither a sin tax nor subsidized health coverage.
Gov't will make the choice of your diet because with State-run healthcare, they will be looking for ways to keep expenditures to a minimum (medical expenditures not bureaucratic expenditures). When the gov't gets involved, they issue diktats. That's the long and short of it. Wut? So when provided imerpical evidence that your idea doesn't work you're just going to disagree and keep on with your close minded agenda? I mean, the guy is in a democracy, yet feels the need it impose his views and positions on the general public, like how big of an ego do you have to have to get so dense!? With the topic in hand you had to be disrespectful and try to make fun of a Spanish speaking American English. Your racism is unwelcome and your opinion is shit so stay out the comments box your irrelevant
Mjr.Mustang302 you missed the point of his comment entirely while the rest here didn’t. He wasn’t even being racist.
btw, Spanish people laugh at the way Americans speak their language. Does that make them racist?
@@elvo6217 Yeah, my wife is Mexican and Spanish is spoken in our household about 40% of the time. The point of the comment was obviously over your head, so your view my relevance and opinion means fuck all to me.
The John Stossel's behavior is amazing!! I love his videos
The government should not monitor how we eat. People should monitor what they eat.
This show would be much more satisfying if John carried a .44 mag and used it.
He carries a .50 BMG disguised as a mustache.
Lol
I love how you ended the video with that final statement "I'm a good cancer" LMAOOOO
Literally all the government would have to do is make healthy food cheaper. That’s it. That simple.
Pull a Debeers and make healthy food the new diamonds
As a diabetic, I wish restaurants posted carbs per entree.
It start with a salt ban. And then an assualt rifle’s ban.
Got it backwards there mate xD
I do feed myself and,my family healthy food but it's no business of the government to tell me what to do. This is socialism, bigger goverment, and it has no place in the US
But the thing is almost all food in the US has too much sugar, fat, emulsifiers, E numbers etc and the market isn't working to lower these quantities. Even 'fresh produce' is full of agrochemicals. The government is the only one with the will to forcibly lower these quantities with sugar taxes that increase the price of these soft drinks that make people obese to discourage purchases. Hiking the price worked with cigarettes and it'll work with sugar
Orlando k9m8 what they SHOULD do if you want more government control is limit the amount of sugar in certain foods, not make it harder to afford.
@@window4799 I don't want more government control, I just want the public to eat healthy. Sugar taxes do that just fine without a bunch more civil servants.
@@orlandok9m822 We are at a point which wanting to eat healthy is a struggle because you have to look for healthy stuff to eat. You can't even trust vegetables and fruits these days. And I'm not even going to talk about junk food. Junk food are bad for you and they are addictive and conpanies know that putting more sugar and fat in them will make you addicted to them even more. As you saw in the video those healthy donuts would not sell as much.
@@wowsuchhandle Yeah it's very bad Citizens United has made food groups even more powerful in the USA by removing restrictions on donations to SuperPACs
No more ban-happy politicians. ENOUGH!
No, the Government shouldn't decide your diet. But when you get heart disease, have heart a heart attack. YOU are going to BLAME the Government for NOT deciding your diets!
Just flat-out "you're a bully"! Jeez!
Too much sugar is the problem, not fats or salts in foods as much
Yes...refined sugar is bad. I get a lot of fat from an avocado, but it's healthy.
No it's *also* the fats and salts
Even my own _doctor_ can't _force_ me to eat a certain way. Why is it up to this guy to slap the salt out of my hand at dinner w/ my family?
A junk food tax is just a poor people tax
When politicians think forcing "healthy" diets on the citizens is their job but keeping illegal aliens out isn't, you most likely are a Democrap. - Jeff Foxworthy

Government needs to stay away from my choices.
Thank you Mr. Stossel for everything that you do. You are a true hero.
Ban sugar and salt, but what about hamburger, sausage, steak, fried chicken, fried fish...Where does it end? Who gets to decide what is healthy and what is not??
Gov't should stay out of our lives and just make laws. . . . oh wait! Thay can't even do that.
i don't even think they should make laws...they should just uphold the ones we already got instead of making more.
@@Demondragonkinggav nah, many laws are made by and serve the corporate machine. Many many many laws need to be repealed. Biggest transgressors of our society today are Alec and citizens united. You just need to instill a firm and resolute cock-block do politicians like this man seen in the video and basically every Democrat running for office for 2020. Not to mention anyone like them and all their constituents among the common Folk. And that's just a start.
I actually appreciate the calorie count at fast food chains. I almost always base my selection off of it.
Shouldn’t be forced though. You always were able to get the numbers if you asked.
@@alextheskaterdude07 that's not necessarily true, I've been to places that wouldn't tell me even if I asked. Definitely shouldn't be forced though. I just avoided that place in the future.
I do as well. I pick the option that gives me the most calories for the price.
@@alextheskaterdude07 why shouldn't it be?
@@JacobRy "Why shouldn't the government force the business to do something?.
In defense of calorie labels. A lot of diets use calorie counting as a way to maintain a calorie deficit to help lose weight. To the average person they can look past it and not worry. To a calorie counter they get to enjoy a food without having to estimate on how much they're consuming.
Salt is absolutely necessary. I have felt that in my own life. I carry salt on me so I can actually function.
@John Stossel how the hell did you get through that interview with that dufass Without laughing your head off?
Yea I always get the highest calorie item on the dollar menu #value
If you want a socialized healthcare, then pay more taxes or eat what they tell you to.
Bro Stossel just went OFF on him
Hang on, calorie information is useful for me when I feel like cutting back. If it's inaccurate then these companies should put more effort into making them accurate. Fair enough if companies don't want to provide such information but in that case I will be less inclined to eat there.
Oliver
The power of choice and capitalism
you can also exercise, wanna cut back, no chips or soda
LOL did this ^ guy really say calories dont matter, only carbs do? XD
I lost weight, without cutting calories, merely by shifting from sugars to fats, ceteris paribus.
calorie counting is bullshit
Given how far off the USDA recommendations are, the government should stay as far away from diet as possible.
Big Food is making sure of that.
Wait whats wrong with USDA recommendations?
"I'm trying to give you the choice to do what I want you to do."
Boy. Boston Soda Party, anyone?
Imagine paying more for food that hurts the ones selling it but profits the party that wants it gone.
A good cancer😂😂
Suddenly I don't know, but I remembered the Demolition man's movie film.
"I'm a good cancer " I like that line
This isn't about the choices we each make, it's about the manipulative marketing tactics used to get us to make those choices.
"i am a good cancer" hah.
I agree with companies listing caloric content of their food, but actually, a nutritional value label should be available too. If you buy candidate or packaged for, it has a label of nutritional values on the side so why not have restaurants do this also
I figure out the basic nutritional value of all the food I eat and cook/prepare at home. You come to my house and I offer you something to eat and you ask, "Hey Molo, what is the nutritional content of this pork sandwich you gave me"? I can give you that information within a minute. I keep track of...
Calories from Protein (1 gram of protein is 4 calories)
Calories from Carbohydrates (1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories).
Example, a tuna sandwich;
2 slices of bread, nutrition per serving is, usually 2 slices, on the side of the bag.
Your phone will reply, "The nutritional value of Mayonnaise is..."
Again, this ain't rocket science, and even a Democrat could do this. But seem most people are dummer than a Democrat...Yuck!
Nutritional value labels are available. I worked at McDonald's and they have pamphlets with all nutritional values, the paper they put on trays have it on the back as well. All major fast food chains have it on their websites too. Its not hard to find this information.
and I shouldn’t have to pay higher health insurance premiums to help pay for someone else’s open heart surgery after a life of smoking and alcoholism.
They’ve told Americans what to eat since 1980 and look how “unrelatedly” the obesity level started to grow ever since.
Basically, the sole reason of obesity is added sugar, 100%.
Carbs too, you can go your whole life without carbs and be completely healthy
This was predicted in the Movie "Demolition Man" (1993)
Yes sex was illegal they had to do virtual reality only
It affected me to change my eatting habit. While Yes I might order something High in Calorie. it could be a Cheat Meal or I plan on eatting less Calories the rest of the day. Doesnt mean all are following the calories like i am Now. but just more Caution on what im eatting and planning around the meals I eat.
I consider that McDonalds is morally superior to any politician
your a maybe, mr. rump
"I am a good cancer" what the fuck is a good cancer?
Making humor great again! Keep it up John.
"Fat tax" That's the most absurd idea i've ever seen!!! They completely forgot that some people follow a Keto Diet!
Politicians have some of the most obsolete ideas too, dieting is no exception
What's the point of living a long life of you won't be happy doing so? If rather live 50 years living as I wish, doing what makes me happy, than living 200 years not being able to make my own choices and eating bland food.
But you won't be happy. You won't be able to move or jog or do any activity worth anything with friends or family. What life is that when every movement fucking hurts? And then hospitals have to take time away from other people for obesity that refused to put the soda down and wanna bitch that their lifestyle caught up with them.

The fat tax money should go to making healthy food cheaper if they really want to make a difference.
In the UK we have the sugar tax which is a tax put on sugary drinks so they’re expensive to buy so chains mainly use zero or diet brands because they’re except from the sugar tax

I'm amazed that such an influential man in us politics has worse English than I do living outside any English speaking country. I like that everyone, independent of culture, can become a politician, but I mean at least you gotta speak it fluently.
The calorie count addition everywhere was and always will be a good idea. Everything else was hogwash
If our tax dollars are going towards subsiding health care there should be dietary restrictions since we are all now responsible for the poor diet decisions of others. I prefer neither a sin tax nor subsidized health coverage.
The more politicians have to spend, the more opportunities they have for kick backs.
Gov't will make the choice of your diet because with State-run healthcare, they will be looking for ways to keep expenditures to a minimum (medical expenditures not bureaucratic expenditures). When the gov't gets involved, they issue diktats. That's the long and short of it. Remember what Ronald Reagan said: "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help" are the nine scariest words you will ever hear.
Stossel is ruthless in this video. The balls on this guy.
I actually agree with restaurants providing health information. I know that most people won't use it but I specifically go to places when I know they lay out macros and calories. That being said, I definitely don't want companies to be forced to do it by the government ofc
