I assume maybe they mean gun bluing, in which it actually blackens. It holds a lot of electrons I believe. Ammonia frees electrons to make negative electrodes in which can create a reduction of sorts :)

What is laundry bluing? And why the newspaper? And why the safety glasses? I don't know about laundry bluing but salt, water, and ammonia are not particularly dangerous. And I'm assuming laundry bluing has something to do with your laundry so it couldn't be very dangerous.

This isn't a lab and the materials are not dangerous. I just find the whole "safety" mentality a little overprotective and ridiculous. If you're working with toxic chemicals, use safety glasses. If you are working with materials that react heavily, where safety glasses. This type of thinking causes ridiculous laws to be passed. Next thing you know it's illegal to cook without safety glasses.
