WarGrowlmon makes sense in context: Takato (the Main Character of Digimon Tamers) is a big fan of Digimon Adventures 1 and 2 and literally created Guilmon and its first two evolutions based on Agumon and its first two evolutions. That's why WarGrowlmon looks as it does, because Takato (a kid) was creating an "improved" version of MetalGreymon.
And it worked war growlmon is way cooler

Worth noting that Pokemon's 'Double Edge' is called "Life Risking Tackle" in Japanese, but Digimon's Double Edge is the same in Japanese. So, despite the English dubs sharing a name, they're named differently in the source material.
So in short, one has the meaning the attack has risky recoil/drawbacks while the other means striking twice
@@TheSeeingman pretty much, yeah. Double Edge in Pokemon's localization is for Double Edged Sword, an attack that harms the target and the attacker. For Digimon, it's two blades. They're extremely different.

Of course, I never really liked the Guilmon line(except the oft mispronounced Megidramon... which they indeed mispronounced here. Watch the anime, it's MEH-GHI-DRA-MON... Like Godzilla Foe King Ghidora, which has a silent o. MEGADRAMON Is a completely different Digimon)... I mean, nothing AGAINST The lines, but... I much prefer Certain other Digimon... heck, one line in that series only has a SINGLE Bad design,("cough" Taomon "Cough Cough") and even IT wasn't THAT bad... they DID ruin Terriermon though. I LIKED Terriermon... until Tamers... talk about a tamers mon that needs alternate lines...(Megagargomon is BAD. And Tamers Rapidmon is LAME Compared to Adventure 02 Rapidmon.)
But yeah, Impmon is cool... but it's not the only Digimon that ws robbed of its top spot... Apparently, there was a Scrapped Digimon adventure 02 Plotline involving Dragomon, the Dark Ocean, Kari, and a group of Dark Digidestined(who were manipulated) With Evil Versions of the 01 groups Digimon(Black Agumon, black Gatomon, Black Gabumon, Arurumon, Tsukaimon, Etc...) And a group of Dark Digieggs, used to Blackarmor Digivolve into powerful Alternative Forms of the 02 Armor forms(except Pegasusmon and Nefertimon, for obvious reasons)... Elements of this plot were later reused for Tri, and we never got even concept art for the supposed final Villain, Apocalymon:Released Mode. (Literally the leftover will and data of Apocalymon, absorbed into the Body of the defeated Dragomon)... Which leaves the Question: WTF does Apocalymon look like released from the Prisonhedron-Thing? A question I still wonder to this day.
(To make matters worse, the long ago leaked info was on a Site that no longer exists, and the series writers completely deny such a thing ever existed... despite the setup IN 02...)

The actual reason in universe for Impmon to get the dinosaur/dragon line is due to a mysterious bug, because Impmon's partner had a Beelzebumon deck that bugged out and became a Heavymetaldramon Deck

Also don’t the necks of the guitars look like swords? I bet there will be a move that eventually has them being used as swords before returning to the wings.

No in universe reason for the similarity, but the Meta reason is that originally Impmon was supposed to be the main partner of Takato in Tamers
I haven’t read the Liberator novel, but Impmon’s partner’s deck type is Dark Dragon Discord so I feel like his new evolutions could be influenced by Yuuki’s deck if that’s the case.

She randomly unlocked an effect on her tamer card that works with dark dragon/evil dragon, after which she changed her deck. We do not know what caused her to suddenly get an effect that works with dark dragon/evil dragon.
Heavymetaldramon is the perfect distillation of Digimon Design in both appearance and naming XD Kyle has it exactly right, it's just 'Heavy metal dra-mon', but it's also the perfect digimon naming tradition. 'Heavy' and 'Metal-dramon'. And the guitar wings are just obviously required XD
Probably the reason the oranger Growlmon is less detailed and a different style is likely as it's the anime design, so simpler to animate and a bit friendlier as a protagonist partner.
I'm pretty sure the less detailed art they were using was also from Survive or one of the newer mobile games, both of which gave all the Digis in them brand new art.
@@eddmario Its from Digimon New Century, a chinese mobile game, they have been doing this with a lot of old Digimon, simplyfiying the designs and a lot of times not making them accurate to the official

I could have sworn that Black Sabbath was an attack from Mephistomon, so I checked, and it IS. Mephistomon basically preys for someone to die and then they will. The fact they reused the name for a completely different attack is honestly my biggest issue with the new line.
Probably referencing 2 disting things, Mephismon's Black Sabbath is directly a pack with the devil while Heavymetaldramon's its the Band
It's a callback to Impmon being the Takatou's digimon on Tamers, they switched to keep the "protagonist's digimon is a dragon".
Gotta admit, WarGrowlmon's chest reminds me of Knockout's car form from Transformers Prime. Same colors spread similarly.
Growmon is still pronounced like growl, just without the l at the end. And the reason Guilmon's line has so many moves is because it's been in a lot of video games and stuff; each form still has like, two MAIN moves.

Specifically, the Digimon that have been in the fighting games got a lot of extra moves in those.
And like I said in my other comment on this, I'm pretty sure they added the "l" into the English name specifically so people wouldn't mispronounce it like the word "grow".

Bandai and Toei Animation use drastically different art styles for Digimon.
Just two facts to you guys:
The reason that the art for growlmon is so smooth in one of the versions is because that one is the anime version, made that way to facilitate the animation.

For anyone watching the video, Guilmon line is basically Takato's (Tamers anime MC) OC version of Agumon but better. Why? Because in Tamers, Adventure series is literally just a franchise from anime to old card game. Guilmon's final evolution line species is literally parts of two different OP digimon's group, one is The Royal Knights and the other is The Four Great Dragon...

A lot of people have already mentioned it, but I will too! (why, because why not) The reason that this Digivolution line is based on the Guilmon line is a reference to the fact Impmon was supposed to be Takato's partner Digimon. But this was later changed to Guilmon.
Also, too be fair about 'Double Edge', in Japanese the Pokemon move 'Double Edge' is written "すてみタックル" which directly translates to "Life-Risking Tackle". While the Wargrowlmon's attack is written in Katakana as 'ダブルエッジ" and translates directly to "Double Edge", unlike the Pokemon move.
More than likely they did this because Impmon was gonna be the partner digimon for Takato in Tamers.
I think the old art for growmon is just more aggro than the new art, so it's glowing and its teeth are out.

The literal reason as to why the new Impmon digivolution line looks very similar to Guilmon's is because, inicially, Impmon was supposed to be the original partner of Takato's but the producers or the director wanted the main character's partner digimon to look similar to agumon
Hey, Black Sabbath and especially Tony Iommi's guitar is very heavy. They were just recording on really old equipment in the 70s, so it sounds thinner on their earlier albums. Basically all modern heavy metal has its roots in Black Sabbath.
Ok but thw bit of "the final battle between good and evil armageddon" is realy funny cause Megidramon is PHYSICALLY armageddon, his x form is defined to be "the greatest sin of the x-antibody" and literally him existing completes the warning of the digital hazard (the symbol in all of guilmon's line) since he eradicates all of existance, and the worse part is that that's not even his true form, the true form (which would be chaosgallantmon x, which does not exist) only can be seen if you give up all hope in living, which means that in whichever universe he appeared, no person was willing to give up their hope, which just sounds SO EPIC

The Assault Balancer is the dangling metal chord on MegaloGrowmon, which can move, holds the Digimon in place when it shoots, and is sharp. It's referenced later as the source of Dukemon's ponytail design.
Guilmons line was litterally about how hazards grow and change wargrowlmon was the hazards of war and megidramon the hazard of the apocalypse

Well with Megidramon having references to Christianity and Armegadeon, Sabbath also had ties to Christianity as well.
When I hear “Dino Kick” it reminds me of these dinosaur toys I had as a child that would connect the foot to this thing that can rotate them and make them fight, until the loser is jettisoned by a hit to the weak point, which I think was the gored part of its side, and they mentioned a dino kick on the box or something like that.
Loudmon’s name reminds me of Luna Loud from the Loud house who is also a purple punk rock character and I think would pair nicely with the line.
Pronouncing Megidramon as “Megadramon” is throwing me off, most people usually pronounced it with a hard “Gi” or “ghi” rather than a “guh” and at the risk of ruining any potential quizzes, there’s also already a Digimon that’s actually called “Megadramon”

The funniest thing is that this is Impmon's third evolution line, it also has a fairly recent one in the Chinese gacha game New Century. Although with the fact the names and designs are based on very Chinese things, probably wouldn't make for a good quiz
The line being Impmon > Lianpumon > Xingtiangmon > Dijiangmon. It's incredibly Digimon with how there's little aesthetic cohesion, but I kind of adore it because of that, and the final form is so edgy.

Edit: this video is a good demonstration of how a lot of Digimon designs are vastly improved when you know what it's referencing/based on. It might be good going forward to write down what each mon's design/name is based on in future episodes

I am not the biggest fan of the new Impmon line but I understand the reason they designed it, but Megidramon is one of my favourite apocalypse inducing monsters in fiction so getting another design inspired by it makes me very happy. It is rather weird that we have Agumon line which heavily inspired Guilmon line and now Guilmon line inspired another line for Impmon.
The thing that bothers me more than the beyblade cord (that i see as some type of ammo strip) in wargrowlmon are it's incomprehensibly thick legs in it's official artwork

To answer your guys question about the assault balancer that's the long weird metal spike cord thing hanging out of wargrowlmons back. I don't have any concrete proof of it but I always thought it seemed like a weird reference to Omega Red from marvel comics.
Growlmon's less detailed second render was likely based on the Tamers anime. That removed details to make it easier to animate, and to emphasize that anime Guilmon's innocent personality is still in this two-story tall frame. Early Digimon Tamers does some interesting stuff with the first Digivolutions.
That's what you get when you give a whole season to the writer that decided the Cthulhu mythos was canon in Digimon. Wild that they gave him the reins even after immediately retconning that.

Yeha, Growlmon's second version is from the Anime Version, and most times they make the anime versions of digimon 'friendlier'

Had a co-worker whose last name is Peoples.
Yeah, the runes in Growmon are meant to be there, the reason why it's not in the new one is because it's based on the Toei version of the design, which is meant to be more "animation friendly" so it has fewer details. Also, the name in japanese is still pronounced "Growl" because it's meant to be a shortned version of the word. It has to do with how Growl is written/pronounced in japanese, which would be "Gurauru" (グラウル). For comparison, Grow would be "Gurou" (グロウ).
And the reason why some moves have multiple names is because they come from the english dub, which is not know for being consistent. Not only the moves names keep changing every game/anime, some Digimon have more two or 3 names in the dub too. Check out WarGreymon's page in the wiki, there's one or two moves with 6 dub names in it.

Kekekekeke, Ah more Digimon Liberator shiz! I wonder if the modern style of Digimon suits you guys more than the older ones you have seen. A lot of older Digimon were usually enemies or monsters of the week, but kids found them cool and every Digimon could potentially be someone’s partner, so when you see them fit into a line kinda strangely, keeping that in mind can help ya folks understand Digimon more as it usually is them slipping them into an existing line as an alternate. Going into lines like this does help you folks, but I do miss when you were tortured by the stupidity of some things like weird recolors and strange one offs.
Growlmon - I noted this Digimon last time when talking about Crys Paledramon. I hope ya can see what I am talking about. Paledramon > Crys Paledramon looks more like Guilmon > Growlmon. As with Guilmon, this creature was designed to look like something a child designed as in the anime. (Not sure if Nico or Kyle has any interest in this trivia I throw out). Now, the reason why they have so many moves is because of the fricking video games. You can’t really make an RPG moveset out of the moves they normally have, so generic options are normally added. Dino Kick for instance was a move Growlmon used in a Digimon Fighting Game (Rumble Arena 2). A lot of different names are due to our friend, the spotty dub of Digimon.
Note 1: Yeah the old artwork is iconic, but it sometimes looks really rough. I kinda miss that old days since they do kinda remove some of the more monstrous aspects of the Digimon when they modernize the art. Like the odd proportions and freaky teeth were originally part of the appeal of Digimon. And usually they are in COMBAT mode in those pictures. Modern art usually depicts them in a casual pose for reference when other artists are animating/drawing. On an interesting note, the modern image used is for Growlmon in the Gatcha Game Digimon New Century… man didn’t expect them to drop the ball that hard, but I get it. It was designed for a small mobile phone screen, so details wouldn’t be noticed anyway.
Punkmon- I don’t have much to say in regards to trivia. It is a punk rock variant of Growlmon. The interesting note on it is that it is so showboaty that if there is no audience, it throws a temper tantrum since it can't get into the groove. Its tail can actually be used as a guitar pick. It scrapes it onto the ground to produce music that it can fight to. All in all, growing on me and I am glad there was a reason other than nostalgia for its design as noted for the others.
WarGrowlmon- See… this was interesting. The original name of this guy is Megalo Growlmon in reference to the Megalosaurus and the fact that it grows like 10 times larger. I think Tamers was when they decided to stop translating things as Mega in the names of Digimon due to it being confusing as Mega is a level. It was always supposed to be designed as a kid trying to one up MetalGreymon. The dood is over designed to a fault and that is the point. It has many design aspects to reflect this. That thin tail thing is called an Assault Balancer. Its main purpose is combat related. The design is primarily a head on attacker, so something needed to cover its back. That whip can be controlled to whip and slash at enemies attempting to exploit its vulnerability to back attacks. Now if only they showed that off in other media. The two back things are thrusters that allow it to fly. The mask is supposed to be like a muzzle and is supposed to restrain it in a “Oh my guy is so powerful he needs a limiter” type of way. It is actually surprisingly accurate to what a 10 year old might design. I really love this guy as it was always so goddamn cool as a kid to see it just massacre its opponents in the anime. The 3-D models for it are amazing as it shows how this thing can actually move. It pretty much is a design that is better in motion than as a PNG. A fun thing is to fill out a roster of some home arcade console called Digital Monster Battle Junction (that was only released in Japan) alongside a Yellow Growlmon.
Note 2: The name is grow, but it is pronounced like Gurauru… aka Growl. Again, the romanization does make it seem weird, but here is how the language works. Growl is Gu-ra-u-ru. In Japanese, they shortened it to Gu-ra-u-mon. Now, this does work, but Gurau sounds like Growl with a Japanese accent. I am on the fence about who decided not to just just romanize it as Guraumon.
Note 3: There is no car influence from what I know of Wargrowlmon. Ya guys just seem to have grasped onto it, but I can see it. Also… again, kid overdesigning his partner due to the “rule of cool”. The mechanical part entirely is cause it was designed to one up MetalGreymon. From the lore aspect, Guilmon, Growlmon and Wargrowlmon are basically “Original Character Do Not Steal” in the form of a Digimon and the final form is the Digital World itself taking those aspects and making an Mega form.
Loudmon- Eh on the name too. It adds onto the idea of a musical theme and I do enjoy the design. It takes the purposefully overdesigned Wargrowlmon and makes it somewhat work. Everything that seemed superfluous in the original has a purpose. The aux cords, the speakers, the microphone on his chest. He attacks by singing and using sound waves… which has actually been done in labs in the real world!!! The dood treats all battles as concerts and stops caring about winning, just creating a good show.
Megidramon- Sadly… this thing doesn’t show up enough due to what it represents. It is Guilmon when it loses control and becomes the embodiment of the Digital Hazard, a calamity to the entire world. Its existence is destructive, like a Black Hole and as a result, it cannot show up much without literally fucking the world up. The fact that Gallantmon exists means that most Guilmon protagonists will always have a “light form” that it can become. At least they allow us to raise one in many videogames and Vpets, but I want it to show up as part of the Four Great Dragons group as a counterpart to Gallantmon, a calamity held back by 3 holy dragons while Gallantmon is Guilmon rejecting its nature and harnessing its power for good. Strangely enough, it only has 3 moves… but understandable as Gallantmon is more marketable and shows up more.
Note 4: The reason why Megiddo Flame and Megido Bite are spelled differently is that one is from Japanese and one is from Korean. A Korean MMO called Digimon Masters Online usually gives Mega Digimon 3 attacks and Megidramon only has 2 normally, so a 3rd was created. That is the only time the move ever showed up and there was a closed Beta in NA that translated it with NO CONSISTENCY and didn’t use a second d. The fact that it was a translation error doesn’t matter as the only OFFICIAL source had it misspelled… yes as a Digimon fan… ughhh.
HeavyMetaldramon- I will say… I really like this one. Those guitar wings are chefs kiss in the design for a musical based demon dragon. It is a fucking YuGiOh level of overdesigned, but man it feels like something that could was born from heavy metal music online. Some notes from the bio I found interesting is that is actually has a similar personality to Beelzemon. It seeks strong opponents to fight, but instead of testing its power, it is seeking to one up every performance it makes. And since like his previous forms, he sees battles as a show, he wants to find and stronger and stronger opponents so the heat of battle makes his music better.
Note 5: There have been card releases now that might give you a better picture in a dynamic pose. Not too much better, but better than nothing.
Black Sabbath is a good attack name , yes it's the name of a metal band but it's for a Digimon named Heavymetaldramon that is influenced by Megidramon (which is usually pronounced as Megēēdramon) which is based off Armageddon in Christianity. And Black Sabbath is like a Black Sabbath, which Sabbath is supposed a day of the Lord and it being Black so to speak is no goods.

Megidramon is pronounced (Meh-Gee-Dramon) not "Mega-dramon." In Japanese Ga and Gi are two different characters. It does lead to a lot of name similarities at times in English, like Megadramon and Megidramon, the distinction is more clear in Japanese.
Another bad case of this is DORUguremon being translated as DORUGreymon(and having to be clarified as NOT a Greymon on every TCG card targeting Greymons).

I still love the Guilmon line since they were my first Digimon exposure.
And Megidramon is still freaking awesome to me.
And Kyle, you have every right to be offended at this if this does offend you, but when you mentioned how evolutions need to make sense and be consistent in some form. I feel like Guilmon’s whole line actually is still fits the criteria with the color scheme and head shape. At least to me that’s how I feel they all fit together still as an evolution line.

Doesn’t even have to be full episode for each group. I think it’d be fun to just guess the names of each group.

Keep in mind, Megidramon is what is callled a dark digivolution, Galantmon, or Dukemon is the intended path. A Dark Digivolution is a digivolution caused by negative energy/emotion, don't knwo who to exactly describe it, and is kind of tradition in the anime for the main protagsonist, or goooglehead, digimon. In Takatos case, who made the entire line up mind you and his digivice, or D-power, basically created guilmon from his drawings, never actually created a mega level for the line. He also created Guilmon as a stronger version of Agumon, as the first two season of digimon are an anime in the world of digimon tamers, takatos season. The dark Digivolution happens when Impon as beelzemon, kills the digimon partner of Takatos crush and it absolutley shatters her. Takato commands Growlmon to digivolve to mega in order to defeat Beelzemon and Takatos rage succesfully pushes Guilmon to digivolve into Megdiramon, but it is very clear that it is not a proper digivolution. Megidramon is just a feral beast, whose mere presence destroys the surrounding digital world, hence the hazards symbols. Even with that feral energy Megidramon would have lost, although another digimon was partially at fault for this, and only when Takato and Guilmon perform a biomerge, literally becomming one entity, Gallantmon, they manage defeat Beelzemon.
On another note, Guilmon is quite unique among partner digimon. He and Impmon, are the only two partner digimon, that I know of but it is a minority, that are virus types, typically the evil digimon, while the majority of partners are either Serum or data.

Also if I had to guess they probably spell Megido with one d while translated in an attempt to avoid referencing Christian concepts in the children's show...where in the previous seasons a villain was a Devil and a hero was an Angel, but whatever, kids localization is fucking stupid.

Megiddo Flame and Megido Bite are different because Megido Bite is a named attack that's not on Megidramon's reference book entry but instead it's from Digimon Masters, which is a Korean game not directly linked with the actual franchise itself that spells certain things differently and is not exactly consistent with Digimon stuff, let alone its lore.
So this is literally just language barrier problems. Hope this cleared up some things cause Megidramon is awesome to me and I love it.

Before we had names for these guys, I liked the names Hertzmon, Kilohertzmon, and Megahertzmon.
Hertz being the measure of frequency that's important for music, and being a homophone for hurts. Then kilo and mega are the prefixes for a thousand and a million hertz, with kilo sounding like kill, and mega being similar to Megidramon, plus referencing the mega level.
I felt pretty good about those. But Bandai preferred Loudmon. 😅
