@@stevekinlough588As a Vietnamese, I think Starbucks must have real value when it is so successful. There are 20 million international tourists coming to Vietnam every year, there are several million investors, foreign experts and overseas Vietnamese here. So Starbucks still has a certain number of customers. Vietnamese people still go to Starbucks to communicate, to prove themselves. Objectively speaking, Vietnamese coffee is too small compared to Starbucks on a world scale. Do Vietnamese people like Starbucks coffee? Oh, it's so boring.
@christopherl4249 Simply put, Starbucks does not suit Vietnamese tastes, just like Sochu is delicious in Korea but too bland for Vietnamese tastes. I think Starbucks has been quite successful in such a market. Highlands Coffee is probably the most successful because they have shaped a business model that suits Vietnamese people. Vietnamese people go to Highlands Coffee or Starbucks for different purposes. Honestly, to enjoy good coffee, I will not go to Starbucks or Highlands Coffee.

In many parts of Asia, especially a coffee centric place like VN, you don’t patronize SBUX because it is the best coffee place. You go there for the status and atmosphere not commonly found. It is the same as staying at a high end hotel at a nice destination when a cheaper place will do. You are paying for American ambiance, which for a typically VN is the opportunity of slow mode everything around you. That is the same reason why western tourist, both white and many younger VK, pay 3x-5x to hang out in the hotspots along Bui Vien in VN. For people like me, that is cheap atmosphere that I got in college, lower end places like French Quarter New Orlean, or non-water access places in Baltimore. I go to those places because they are dirt cheap comparing to other parts of the same areas but younger westerners and local Vietnamese don’t know because noone told them what rich westerners desire and it is definitely not sitting on uncomfortable chairs along the street to drink standard beers and eating unknown street foods.
