  • It was just like any other morning for Cork dairy farmer Liam O'Keeffe. He was heading off to town to get some machinery parts when he noticed his bull was not in his usual place in the yard. What happened next has changed his life forever.
    Bulls and livestock attacks are one of the major causes of death and serious injury on Irish farms. Liam has shared his story in this video to help other farmers think twice about their own safety around bulls.

    No bulls but my dad raised hogs for a few years. He had the biggest male hog, over 450 lbs when dad first got him and he got bigger each year, I have even seen then or since then. He was fit too, not fat. Just one big muscle. And that big ole boy HATED men. He chased my dad out of that big pig pen countless times. My mom or I could go in there and he would eat out of our hand and just love us to rub behind his ears and talk sweet to him. He was so gentle following us around like an enormous puppy. When someone would pay to take him to their hogs for breeding, getting him loaded up without my mom or I there was a challenge! He hurt several men, lol. Not hospitalized bad but emergency room hurt bad a few times. They were all scared of him including my dad who wasn't afraid of much, old Marine! I could go in the pen, he would come up immediately for a treat, good hard scratching behind his ears, and to hear me telling him what a handsome good boy he was, then he would sweetly follow me up the ramp onto the trailer. I would tell him to have fun and that I would see him in a few days. Twice I had to go to the farm where he had been having fun to get him to load up as no one could get him too. I would chastise him saying, don't cha want to come home? Why are you causin such a fuss? That pretty big white boar would just rub up against me. One time there were at least a dozen men that had tried everything to get him to load. When I climbed into the pig pen, they all had a fit thinking that boar was going to kill me. They couldn't believe how happy he was to see me, how gentle he was, and that he walked right behind onto that trailer.

      Think I'd rather a quick death of a bull stamping me flat or a horn through my head than gored and eaten by a huge boar 🐗 😂

    I was a little girl and I would have to go out in the pasture and get the cows so I could milk them. We always had a Holstein bull that would make me so nervous. I always had a dog with me but when they’d start pawing the dirt and frothing at the mouth I’d be on the run. My husband damn near got gored on the ground but thankfully the dog cane and nipped enough for him to roll under the fence. I still dream about bulls in my nightmares that’s how scary they are. I ended up being a state level hurdler from all the running I did on the farm.

    Just started working at a dairy farm this week. Had me first encounter with a Holstein bull today, took quite a bit to get him to back off and get back to what I was doing safety, thankfully the last cattle operation (angus beef) I learned how to handle bulls by standing your ground and if you want em to move you get them going and never turn your back on them.

    Ai the cows you want heifers from and have a Angus or Hereford bull for the rest. Lot better prices for beef cross and those bulls are a lot gentler than freisans. I've worked with a neighbours freisan bull. He was huge about 1200 kg and 12 inch horns. Never any problem, but he was the boss. If he wanted to come in the parlour with the cows, he came in.

    Never turn your back on a Holstein bull. My dad raised a lot of bulls growing up. Herfords, you could actually ride on them. A Holstein bull kills. They get angry fast. Lucky you survived.

    Maybe you should be a farmer before making comments or suggestions that you have no idea wtf you’re talking about. Bulls can turn at any time and a ring may be the only thing that can give you control and or save a life if ned be… but the world needs to eat and farmers are the ones that continue to sustain life on this marble.
    But please continue to offer suggestions on a matter you know absolutely nothing about…

    our bulls dont have a nose ring if they are agressive you hop in our tracktor and smack the bucket on his head works every time. and if they dont want to get in a trailer you just grab the telehandler and push them in.

    Dairy bulls are pure hell. I hate seeing those things come off the cattle pots at the beef slaughter plants as a federal meat inspector. They are scary as hell in the antemortem pens and they don't drive worth a damn up the alley into the restrainer. We've had to shoot some in the pens and then bring the carcass into the line because they are unsafe for cattle handlers to push up into the plant. A damn Holstein bull almost killed my dad in 1992 at the beef slaughter plant. They had him in a USDA suspect pen for the veterinary officer to check him and he got my dad cornered. Another cattle receiver saw that pulled dad out, shot the bull immediately. The vet said that more than likely there was something wrong with the brain of that bull that turned him violent.

    • @jozigirl7114
      @jozigirl7114 9 лет назад +3

      hartam141 We never ringed one of our non dairy bulls - never had a problem with them, very docile - and in all honesty, if a bull of that size is upset a ring in his nose is going to make him even more agitated. He should have let the cows back in with the bull and then took them out all together. Its an awful thing to happen, and thank goodness it has never happened to one of our herdsmen. How we kept our bull happy was to always have cows in his sight line. We had the same herdsman work with him all the time without fail so that he they had a good relationship, and we never once had to use the ring other than to lead.

    Always nice to see animals get revenge on their abusers. I wish we could release bulls in steakhouses and ice cream parlors so the customers could have a taste as well.
