Looks like Shatterhand and Powerblade. Sounds like a Konami game. Nostalgia in full effect!
Definitely Powerblade down to the blonde guy wielding boomerangs and stage select screen.
Was thinking the same thing
I was gonna post just that
I'd say there's also a good bit of NES Batman inspiration here!
And a bit of Vice
As someone who was around during the 8-bit days this is a perfect representation of that era.
Exactly unlike all those other so called 8-bit Indies that are clearly 16-bit.
This! This is how you make a "retro" game. This game gets right what so many others get wrong. The look, feel, tone, and sound are all dead on. Everything about this game screams 8 bit NES game. Not, kind of like an 8 bit Nes game. Outside of this game having a perfectly stable frame rate, you would never know it wasn't released in the 80's. Hats off to the Devs. You did it exactly right.
Yeah. To be a true "retro" game, I feel like it should be able to run on actual nes, or snes. This seems like it could.
Nah, what's important is style, not authenticity. Nes wasn't 16:9, it wasn't HD, it only had 2 buttons, it had annoying sprite flicker and a low sprite limit, etc... You "muh authenticity" people are just silly.
Good retro games should be like the synthwave music genre, you use the benefit to hindsight to zero in on what elements were uniquely appealing about an era, and then you amplify those strengths while ignoring the rest. What you end up with is something that is more 80s/90s than 80s/90s actually were.
there aren't much happening, no AI, no huge number of enemies, no expensive visual effect, so it isn't difficult to have a perfect frame rate
Yes, the rules of the Game Jam where this game was made for (in 10 days) were clear about how the game should look, sound and play. Graphics had to emulate those of a console of the 80s or 90s, an NES, a Game Boy, a SEGA Master System, the sound as well, it had to look like some sort of lost game of that era. And the controller input is limited as well, the Game Jam stated that you could have directional buttons, Start, Select, A and B, and that's it.
@@Xetan123 yeah kinda like how Indestrucotank can be played on an actual gameboy
I can appreciate that the devs went the extra mile to simulate the curved screen of a CRT monitor. Adds to the nostalgic feel. :)
The fact that this game was made for a Jam is amazing...
That's insane, it looks so polished.
Yeah, the dev's really good at making retro action games. They're also working on a Castlevania homage game called The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest (which I covered on the channel last year). It's excellent too! :)
This is about as faithful of a representation of earlier games as you can get
This looks like Power Blade 2 on NES which was already like Contra and MegaMan with shooting and upgrades. Still pretty cool.
It is like Contra, Shatterhand and Powerblade had a baby. And it is awesome.
It's more like Power Blade and Shatterhand mixed.
This giving me some NES Batman and Street Fighter 2010 vibes alongside Contra and MegaMan with just a little bit of NES TMNT as well. Looks awesome and can't wait for the full release
And Shatterhand
@@mode7apps Haven't heard of that one but I will take your for it
@@luislopez7220 Shatterhand is far and away more famous than Street Fighter 2010. 😂
@@ostiariusalpha Not sure, AVGN popularized SF 2010 to be fair.
@@AlmostAeroGauge Even most AVGN fans have forgotten about SF2010 again. It's a very forgettable game.
This is like Shatterhands meets Powerblade :D I love it!
Holy cow this is just like Shatterhand. Oh man how I've wanted a game like that again
If part of the programming of this game was the fact that it looks like it's being played on an actual TV set, along with the reflection of the text right on the screen, then I am SEVERELY impressed IN ADDITION TO how faithful of a 90's 8-bit game this is! This is a complete winner!
New POWER BLADE game looks so good)
I was gonna say ..forget mega man / contra but people won't click on one that says powerblade / vice project because they're uncivilized.
Definitely. I wonder if Tengo Project has the right to make a remake.
This remind me a cross between power blade and shatter hand
I knew I recognized that wallhanging gimmick from somewhere.
throw in a little Journey to Silius, a little Kabuki Quantum Fighter, and we got a stew going!
@@stylishcephalophod cool 😎 I never knew that
Yes, me too. It totally reminds me of Shatterhand.
Holy crap! You can't get much more retro than this. By the way, shouldn't the main character's name be "Snake Plissken", rather than "Hal"?
Haha, definitely! This is an Escape From Ney York game in all but name! :)
Not to mention, Hal is Otacons real name in Metal Gear Solid
@@TheMetalGearKid And Metal Gear was inspired partially by Escape From New York. So we've got inspiration inception.
6:00 guy asks guy who breaks into people's properties, into engine rooms to sabotage them, or even hangs on fences on rooftops above chasms for a living if he ever feels like he's somewhere where he doesn't belong, where he shouldn't be.
Looks great, though I do have to wonder what the hell the protagonists' projectiles are supposed to be. It's also funny to imagine two characters just talking into radios *right* next to each other--poor Iroquois.
I think it's a reference to MGS 2, where Kojima allegedly did that because the studio ran out of time to animate cutscenes.
@@EGRJ Ah. Noted. That would make sense given Iroquois Simon's (first?) given name is likely a nod to that exact same game too given one of Solid Snake's aliases in it is Iroquois Pliskin apparently (which I imagine you already knew).
@@MusicoftheDamned Yep. And "Pliskin" is the last name of "Snake" from Escape from New York, which Solid Snake was partially based on.
@@EGRJ Right. That much I at least already knew despite never playing a _Metal Gear Solid_ game since I think I've seen (most of) that movie or at least I've _Escape from L.A._ (too?)--I forget.
We call it a chakram, and it's basically an energy based boomerang weapon akin to what Xena: Warrior Princess uses.
The music and graphics remind me of a gameboy game I played when I was 9-Batman: Revenge of the Joker. The gameplay's not the same, naturally, but the music, sound effects, and graphics are adjacent.
Epic soundtrack.
Yeah, it's awesome. The soundtrack is actually by Raddland Studios, who did the soundtracks for Retro City Rampage and Shakedown Hawaii!
Oh my god this looks perfect!
I think you may be missing a reference here, ABG. There was a contraesque game with a blonde guy with a Street Fighter's Guile haircut who was named Nova. His main weapon was a boomerang.
The robots at 1:59 are lifted from that one hellishly difficult Batman game tho.
Haha, yeah there are quite a few references in the game! Also Metal Gear radio conversations and a story that's straight out of Escape From New York! :)
This is something james rolfe SURE would love to play.
I agree its definitely inspired by megaman and contra but i also see clear hints of Power blade as well :D
Like others have said: Lots of Shatterhand and Powerblade here. Not a damn thing wrong with that! The person making this is quite an amazing indie game dev. The CV2 remake they've been working on is absolutely amazing. Awesome seein Simon make a cameo here too lol
these are intriguing colors and artstyle
I love it. The only thing i hate is that sound when text is being made. It sounds awful. It sounds like typeing and they arnt typeing at eachother.
5:41 guys stand face to face but still talk through their walkie-talkies. As an introvert I can understand that.
Game:"In this world Detroit has become a lawless dystopia housing the worst criminals in the US."
Me:"So business as usual for Detroit."
[Insert obvious _Robocop_ jokes here.]
Can't shoot at walls on rooftops and casually chuck grenades down a ladder without some buff dude knocking you cold with a boomerang. Can't have s hit in Detroit.
So, THAT'S how to get around without being killed in Detroit: Cybernetic bladed boomerangs...
Don't forget strategically placed fences on building walls hanging high above chasms.
The helicopter reminds me of Journey to Silius.
Nice to see a Megaman inspired game make better use of the grab mechanic. They implemented it in X5 and X6, but it was always half arsed at best, and functionally unusable as Zero in X6 after you got the down dive slash.
The opening text sounds almost exactly like the opening from Escape from New York.
If it's ever completed as a full game I will definitely buy it.
5:26 man it must be hell for the accountants of this badguy firm with soldiers just stupidly shooting at walls on rooftops and casually chucking grenades down the chute. How do you even classify those expenses?
this is the spiritual successor to power blade and i like that
Power Blade, Zen Intergalactic Ninja and Contra - in one game. Welldone devs, arcade, oldskul Shoot'Em Ups/Run'N'Guns/Platformers of 1980's, 1990's rules forever. Thanks a lot.
8:04 *gets hit with a missile*
ABG: 'Tis but a scratch!
does anyone ever heard of 8 bit game call gun-dec? same kind of action..best game ever during my childhood.. dang, i'm old..
Absolutely LOVED it.
Wow this is a perfect retro game
8:02 "A rocket hit me in the ass."
This game is a bag of mixed nuts -- you got Metal Gear Solid codec (Iroquois? I see what you did there), gameplay Contra/Metal Slug and the plot is suspiciously similar to Escape from New York!
This game certainly has potential in hitting that "retro" feel.
Just wanted to say that I love you Alpha (no homo ofc). Keep doing what you’re doing man, we’re loving every second of it
Thank you very much! Glad you like the videos! :)
That's so cool!!!!!
I want this on Nintendo Switch yesterday.
We just dropped it digitally on all consoles today!
This shit looks absolutely amazing.
All you devs out there who talk about retro this and that and the 80s and 90s whooaaa, take notes, this is how it looked and sounded.
Awesome!
Nice. Even has that nes flavor music.
this looks like shatterhand and power blade smashed together.
NES Batman + Shatterhand + Powerblade + a little twist of Contra. Put it in a blender. Serve it to the fans with a straw and a controller. Count me in!!!!
Programancer is a retro genius!
Love it!
Gives a bit of an NES Batman and Shatterhand kind of vibe.
I'd say there's a lot of NES Batman in here too
Great bgm also.
This is what happens if powerblade and sunsofts batman had a child
Shatterhand + Batman + Power Blade = ShatterBat PowerHand
This tastes like if Double Dragon 2 and Contra had a baby. If I saw it on a cartridge I would believe it was from the 90s.
И снова Босс-Вертолет...
Ah retro games…nothing like it.
5:57 he looks like one of the characters from contra force nes
Why does Detroit always get it this way?
Hal is the wrong name, right name - Snake.
Inspired by Power Blade 2, i think)
«"Prison city" because "Can't have s--- in Detroit" is too long and not allowed!»
In the 80s, the city that went under and was turned into a prison was New York. Then, in the 90s, it was Los Angeles. But nowdays, we all agree its Detroit.
Since when did power blade and shatter hand have a baby?
niiice. im interested. power blade, shatterhand and vice project doom all in one
Music 10/10 👍
Man, techno-terrorists are a pain. Worse are only dubstep-terrorists.
Helicopter Boss !! :D AHAHAHAHAHAH
That's powerblade influenced.
It looks like Power Blade ^^ !
Iroquois Simon being socially awkward af
So this is basically escape from New York City but in Detroit
In the 80s, the city made into a prison was New York. In the 90s, it was Los Angeles. But nowdays, its Detroit.
Dead on guys...dead on
The title says contra & mega-man, but I'm feeling more shatterhand and batman. Is this a full game, not a demo or quick game either.
It's not contra definitely, but more Batman (nes) / Shatterhand / PowerBlade / Blue Shadow (Shadow of the Ninja) game. But looks awesome!
Love the Mi-24 Hind D Boss fight and I feel it was prety good for a Chopper figh scene espwcualy with how much space they had to work with.
solbrain...is that...you?
Ofc its detroit
The gameplay reminds me street fighter 2010 on NES 🤣🤣🤣
Esto sería genial para un lanzamiento físico en cartucho para la gran y mítica NES.
Basically Shatterhand and Power Blade.
IN
Power Blade 3.
Power Blade
This def is more inspired by Shatterhand
POWERBLADE and Shatterhand inspired! Even some Batman How NEStalgic))
Send him to detroit
This game is clearly inspired by Power Blade
I wonder why this game's name isn't Shatterhand Returns.
Powerblade 4?? No wai!!1
Shatterhand vibes
🎉🎉
👍👍
This game looks super sweet, but it has severe Metal Gear-vibes, especially with the use of radio transmitters and heavy text. Sooo much plot for a powerblade metroidvania spinoff; less text, more shooty! The music is quite nice, for all that exploration...
Where is this? I need it!
We just dropped it digitally on all consoles today!
more like Shatterhand + Megaman
So this is one of these "found footage" games, I see...
