When you put the Newton device near the receiver. Soit can listen to the tones and dial the number. As in the same ways when you push the buttons on the phone receiver. Remember Captain crunch whistle if you know what I mean.

I started out with a 120 and that was really usable. The handwriting recognition wasn't half bad all things considered, like the processors that were available at the time. And the functionality of that assist button (contextual intelligence) is only partly matched to this day. The 2100 I got later was huge step in the right direction, but it wasn't meant to be.

Ummm, it's "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog", not "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy brown dog".
Mine worked very well. I used it every day back in the mid-nineties. I still have it, and it still works. It did have the odd glitch where you couldn't erase something from the screen and you would have to delete that particular note, but at least on the 2100 the handwriting conversion was very good.
Man these were so incredible in those days and the handwriting recognition was actually impressive - it seemed so advanced and it was.
