Joseph "Sepp" Gangl, the Wehrmacht officer that joined forces with the Americans in this battle, had previously promised his men that he'd get them through the end of the war alive. When he set out to fight back the SS, he did so to save the lives of civilians in Castle Itter and the nearby town. During the Battle of Castle Itter, Despite being heavy outnumbered, outgunned, and undersupplied, the Allied soldiers, consisting of a single Waffen-SS Hauptstrumfuhrer (Kurt-Siegfried Schrader), Wehrmacht troops (11 of them, lead by Major Gangl), 16 American soldiers from the 10th armor division and 142nd infantry regiment (along with their tank), and a number of Austrian and French political fingures (including a former Prime Minister and a tennis star) held out against anywhere from 150 to 200 men from the 17th Waffen-SS Panzer Grenadier division. The defenders' losses were in single digits (including the tank), while managing to capture or kill dozens of the attacking SS troops. They did this after Gangl had begun taking actions to protect the local town of Worgl from the aforementioned SS division, who were committing minor atrocities (destroying property of those flying the Austrian flag, or a white flag of surrender, executing men as suspected deserters), refusing the general order of retreat and throwing in with the local resistance movement. Gangl died taking a bullet for the former Prime Minister during the battle. Two days later, peace was declared.

The Battle for Castle Itter in the Austrian North Tyrol village of Itter was fought on May 5, 1945, in the last days of the European Theater of World War II. Troops of the 23rd Tank Battalion of the 12th Armored Division of the US XXI Corps led by Captain John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr., a number of Wehrmacht soldiers, a Waffen-SS officer who defected, and recently freed French prisoners of war defended Castle Itter against an attacking force from the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division until relief from the American 142nd Infantry Regiment of the 36th Division of XXI Corps arrived. The French prisoners included former prime ministers, generals and a tennis star. It may have been the only battle in the war in which Americans and Germans fought side-by-side. Popular accounts of the battle have called it the strangest battle of World War II

After the downfall of the 3:rd reich, on the 5:th of May 1945 a strange battle took place in the Tyrolean mountains in Itter, Austria. Soldiers of the Wehrmacht and the US Army joined forces fought together against the SS to save the lives of prisoners being held in the castle of Itter. Under the command of American Captain John C Lee and German Major Josef Gangl the castle was defended by less than 30 German and American soldiers together with the French former prisoners of the castle. Together, and with a little help from their Sherman Tank ”Besotten Jenny” who was placed at the main entrance they managed to hold the 100-150 men strong Waffen SS unit at bay until they were relieved by the allies.
Besotten jenny was destroyed during the battle by a waffen SS 8.8 flak cannon , only the radio operator was in the tank when it was hit and he got out safely.

German army begging the american enemie soldiers to help them defend a german village who is wanting to surrender, from being purged by a large fanatic SS divison. They togheter hold a fucking castle on a hill, togheter with some freed flamboyant armed French prisoners. Overhwelmed and holding togheter, combining each others combat tactics, lots of language misunderstanding, and distrust that developes into friendship, fighting and dying until the allied armies arrives and the nazi government officially surrenders. This movie would have fucking broken the cinema. It could have been the best summer Action/Comedy/Drama of the year, and instead we get transformers. HOLLYWOOD YOU ARE CLUELESS.
I feel like this is a perfect song. Especially for the last stand album. It’s both a last stand for the allied and the German soldiers. But it’s also a final offensive of the nazis. Their last stand. At least that’s how I see it.
TBH, without minimizing Gangl's merit and sacrifice or anything, I think the Kurt-Siegfried Schrader (the SS officer who took part in the defense against the other SS) merits as much credit. The guy was actually wounded and in hospital, but when he was told that the castle is undefended and in danger that the marauding regiment of SS in the area might drop by and execute the prisoners, he put on his uniform and went back to the castle to organize the defense. He opened the armoury, armed the prisoners, and it was also he who sent the messenger that eventually found Gangl. So, yeah, I guess not all SS were murdering psychos. Though, on another note, I wonder exactly how the guy sent to ask for help defending the castle against the SS, ended up telling a Wehrmacht Major (Gangl) about it. I mean, if you want to get help against some Germans, asking a German officer where you can find the Americans isn't exactly the most obvious choice, is it? Especially in a town that was, as Gangl told him then, full of the murderous kind of SS that were busy making example of people and generally were exactly those that Schrader was afraid would drop by to execute the prisoners too.
This was the battle, where the Germans finally looked up from their war-drunkeness, and said "oh my God, what have we done?! It's over, we are done, no more! we either quit now or we will all die foolishly!"
Not exactly. The war-drunken ones stayed just as drunk as they had been, that was the SS. Joseph Gangl, the Wehrmacht officer that worked together with the Americans, had been in the german army before the Nazis took power, and did what he saw as his duty to his country. And when the war turned against , he saw his duty in protecting the civilians. And towards the end, he promised his men that he'd get them through all of it alive. He had made contact with austrian resistance fighters a while before the battle, exactly due to that reason. They stayed in the region around Itter even though the rest of the German army was retreating, because they knew that otherwise, the SS would move in and kill anyone trying to surrender to the Americans. For the same reason, he and his men teamed up with the Americans to help the former prisoners in Castle Itter, as the SS was gearing up to attack it. Motives can be extremely simple and understandable, even those of people on the enemy side.
We should all remember the heroic actions of John C "Jack" Lee jr, the civilians, the German soldiers, the U.S. troops, and the sacrifice of Josef Sepp Gangl.
In war we abandon both our past and our future we could’ve had. allies and enemy alike they have families to go back to as well. not all are cold hearted like some. Some fight for glory, love, and victory of being a hero, and Others for Their home and family if we had not won most would not “have” a home to go back to or family.
Cringey Player So Keep On Playing idk where, but I heard that she was repaired and was on display somewhere. Sherman’s were known to get disabled, be repaired, and be back on the front line in a couple weeks. They also were arguably the safest tank to be in as while they would get disabled fairly easily (compared to heavier tanks), some or all of the crew usually made it out of the tank and would be right back on the front lines when their tank was repaired.
“Jenny” is a reference to the M4A3E8 Sherman tank used by Captain Lee which was nicknamed “Besotten Jenny”. The “Jenny” was positioned right in front of the castle gate as the SS forces advanced on Itter.
I don`t think it was about giving it an "overwhelming name" like "the razorblade" or something hilarious ^^ It`s more a sign of personal connection to a trusted piece of warfare metal, that maybe had saved their asses before several times. People forget that Schloss Itter was also the only battle where American forces fought inside a castle.
Best Song Ever
Good thing this was final journey of such horrible period in history, instead of letting Churchill continue it.
Gives me the good feelings.
Good fucking music, men
To Major Gangil. "Hail, the Victorious Dead"
This song kicks ass thank you to all who served
TODAY IS 74TH ANNIVERSARY OF CASTLE ITTER
Based on Battle of Castle Itter
Leopard 1 🇩🇪🇩🇪And 🇺🇸🇺🇸: ALLIES AT LAST!
By far the greatest cross over episode I've ever seen
I feel like this is a perfect song. Especially for the last stand album. It’s both a last stand for the allied and the German soldiers. But it’s also a final offensive of the nazis. Their last stand. At least that’s how I see it.
it's been almost 8 decades( 78 years actually) since the german and american soldier unite to defend the castle
Alejandro Rabang may they all rest in peace, true heroes
Once th leader has fallen, enemies become allies, fighting for true human rights, peace and prosperity without harm nor prosecution
Leader was not alone. Never lone man can do so much. He had many many followers in USA to...
This is a seriously underrated song
Gangl and his unit actually joined the Austrian Resistance and already stopped taking orders from Berlin days before the battle.
So they had, but still, how would the guy they sent for help know?
The home of the brave and the land of the free, from the foot of the alps to the shores of the sea.
If anyone is asking, 'Jenny' was a Sherman Tank providing Support whilst Blocking the Main Gate
sounds like an epic anime ending
A movie needs to be made
This is so perfect when im playing cod wow
RIP Gangl
Rip Sepp Gang you were a true German hero
Weeee goosebumps
Epic story yet its true!!!
Outstamding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We should all remember the heroic actions of John C "Jack" Lee jr, the civilians, the German soldiers, the U.S. troops, and the sacrifice of Josef Sepp Gangl.
RIP major Gangl you will be remembered
In war we abandon both our past and our future we could’ve had. allies and enemy alike they have families to go back to as well. not all are cold hearted like some. Some fight for glory, love, and victory of being a hero, and Others for Their home and family if we had not won most would not “have” a home to go back to or family.
It's American troops and the German army joining together at last!

Jenny is bae.
All Jenny is now is probably Scrap metal. Sorry but its the truth.
Cringey Player So Keep On Playing but its piece of history :)
The end of the war just begun..
Demon - The Night of the Demon
While everyone else celebrates cinco de mayo. I celebrate this battle.
Castle Itter is my favorite battle of WW2
There is a book about this battle.
can someone tell me what 'Jenny' means
Christoph Springer jenny is name, hope i helped you :D
“Jenny” is a reference to the M4A3E8 Sherman tank used by Captain Lee which was nicknamed “Besotten Jenny”.
The “Jenny” was positioned right in front of the castle gate as the SS forces advanced on Itter.
well thanks... I guess
Thank you :)
Wasn't the Tank lost to an explosion? I know a radio operator was the only guy in there and he survived.
HEAR HEAR! NEW SABATON ALBUM JULY 14TH!
HELL YEAH
If I am rembering correctly from the booklet that comes with the cd for this album one of the the two commaders had the name Jenny in their names.
Amber Jackson it was the nickname for one of the tanks, well part of it's nickname
Besotten Jenny was the name of the M4A3E8 Sherman tank that the American forces had.
The two Officers were Lee and Gangel.
Yep it was. Also who names a Tank Jenny? Seems kind of underwhelming.
I don`t think it was about giving it an "overwhelming name" like "the razorblade" or something hilarious ^^ It`s more a sign of personal connection to a trusted piece of warfare metal, that maybe had saved their asses before several times. It was maybe just "their girl" and besotten because she might have made her way stubbornly despite harsh conditions. Just guessing.
Just saw this battle on simple history
Anyone else realize that this sounds VERY similar to Rorke's Drift? 1:13-1:21 sounds very similar, and 2:09-2:27 is essentially identical.
From the home the brave, from the land of the free makes me proud to be American
Well. From the foot of the alps to the shores of the sea makes me proud as a german! Great our nations are friends now!
Why isn't there a movie about this battle?
Ulfang999 How do you know?
