Biggest trouble I have with trad shading is where to put it! I always fear it's going to look out of place, I have a lot of unfinished practice skins due to the worry of messing up, great video as always! very informative and will help me out loads!

Paint flash sheets so you study the shades bforehand

    • @JustinTatts

If you don’t know where to “put the shading” ( where the shading goes ) then chances are you haven’t done enough drawing and you need to worry about drawing more before tattooing In general I think it’s pointless to worry about how to do shading or how to do line work in general if you don’t even know how to draw

Thanks for posting this awesome video! It would be super helpful if you could include in the description the needle info (what size mag?) and the speed of your machine. I know there’s more than one way from point A to point B, but it would be great to have a general starting point. If I’m using your results as a reference, I have no way to know where I might have gone wrong. Thanks again for putting all this info out there!

This might make more sense in my head than in text, but, how do you know if your whip shading is “deep enough” into the skin to stick. Meaning the part of the whip where it’s lightest (the little dots). Isn’t whip shading putting the mag into the skin and whipping it then out of the skin? Will the ink in the very end of the whipping motion stick into the skin? To me it seems like the very end, as the mag is coming out of the skin, wouldn’t be deep enough to stay? Might be a totally dumb question lol 😆

Hey Brandon, first off thanks for making these in depths videos and being so approachable with questions as many in the industry aren't so kind. Anyway I have a couple questions that may or may not have simple answers. First is can I premix my own greywash in large amounts and save it for future sessions? Of course I would use distilled water and new sterile medical grade bottles, but is there a time frame in which I can use the wash? Also what do you think about witch hazel in your wash? I've also heard green soap but that seems a little risky. Thanks again brotha much love from los Angeles ✊💯

I still have a hard time understanding artificial light source placement with shading traditional. How do you decide where to place the shading with each different traditional design? Where would the light source be to create the shadow? And how come I see different tattoo artists placing shading sometimes with traditional in areas that don't make sense, as far as a light source is concerned?

look at tons of western traditional flash and copy it. it’s not about realism, it’s about impact. shade to emphasize and block off shapes. try not to overdo the shading, keep things consistent, and simple. don’t worry about what looks realistic.

Hey! I know I’m 4 months late on this so I won’t be upset if you don’t get to this comment however I’ve been learning how to tattoo for over two weeks now and my biggest problem with traditional shading is having an even flow even when I do the cross hatch. I think the reason might be that I tend to focus on areas that don’t need any attention so I over saturate them. Would love to know what you have to say. Thankyou !
