Taken from what Crazy Philadelphia Eddie told me. It is called flash as the designs where put up on a string. Tattooing was illegal and many shops were in back of a barber shop. When news.of the police coming , the string of designs were taken down in a flash. This knowledge was given to me at a convention by Eddie himself. He is a legend in the tattoo community
Hello! Thank you for this amazing video. I’ve just started drawing to learn tattooing, and this was truly inspiring. I love the texture and depth in Japanese tattoo flash, and your talent really shines through. Please keep sharing more videos with these techniques!
Watched this video a couple weeks ago starting on making flash designs. That arches paper has been a big step up in quality and I’m finally making designs Im proud of.
I have been drawing flash for 10+ years, you nailed on this video man! I have tried loads of stuff and i would suggest trying out Canson Watercolor paper, not so textured like arches, but it is very nice. Also Posca pens for lining and black shading, their black is very dark. Keep the good work and the tradition alive 😀
I want to start in the world of traditional American tattooing, but I want to start making these designs, to capture the art first on paper, I feel it gives a little more pleasure to see your designs captured not only on the skin of the client. Thanks for this video
Spit shading while smelling greensoap and punk rock blasting sound of coils....hate this rotary era no noise shops...i got some paños from folsom when i did my little term i tattooed alot but i was also collecting art..
Yessir that right there is what sparked the magic of tattooing for me. That’s badass. Some really amazing art and tattoos in there. I used to drive by that prison every day in the way to my lady’s apartment years ago.
My dudes. The one thing i do like about the rotary thing though i will say after racing motorcross and blowing out both wrists multiple times+ getting older is the arthritis etc in my hands. It helps immensely. Almost had to put it down because my hands would go numb while tattooing and they started coming out with rotary. Finally made the switch 2 years ago myself around the time bishop put the 1st wand out. Miss the good ole days though. A younger artist i was talking to at a convention and i mentioned micky s while talking about machines and he said "who? "😂😂😂😂 Apprentice's now a days don't know the half of it😂😂
@@McV1llaiN I use rotaries for portraits, the consistency of the hit is important. I’ve tried the cartridges but I just prefer the feeling of a bar needle. At least you got the motocross cool guy excuse haha, some of my co workers are perfectly fine but say that coil machines are too heavy, to which I reply hit the gym homie! Haha
140lb won’t buckle if you use the block correctly. The weight of the paper is its ability to absorb; unless you are layering on gouache, 300lb is not necessary for tattoo flash.
I would love to see an update on your process. Super Informative video thank you so much. You’re one of the only people that kinda explained a lot of the differences in the materials.
I recommend PH Martins Morning Star as a black alternative. It’s an India ink and is 100% matte. Just something to try if you keep running into shiny blacks when you are inking your flash. 🤙
@@shasommer thanks, I think that higgens is a bit too thin the line tend to spread a bit too much especially on hot press water color paper. I’ll give that stuff a try
This was sooo helpful! All I could find was how to draw such and such. I know how to draw, I just needed tips like you have in this video. So glad I found this and I’d love to see more
Hey man! This is such a awesome video. Ive just recently gotten into American traditional and its history behind it as well. Do you have any advice on flash art placement were the art is spaced out evenly and the art fits in proportion? I have a hard time making that work. Is there a certain measurment method? Or is it just something that you learn over time.
How do you shade with a ballpoint pen ? Incredible art really enjoyed and being in tattoo studios I did wonder how the flash art was done thanks for the content 😊
Great work. Keep it up. Looking forward to the Panos in the future. Just a heads up. Your video came up in me feed on its own. Yet when I looked for your video on another device it took a lot of digging. That may be what has hindered you from getting more views. Best of luck. I followed and liked the video.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m sure your comment may help getting the video higher up there! It did well at first but slowed down. The goal of this video was to share knowledge for people who are seeking it, not to get as many views as possible. However more exposure could help more people with their painting 👍
Whens that follow up video coming out? I'm trying to figure out how you make such clean lines on that cold press w all the texture. I've used arches cold press for years but recently decided to try some hot press since it doesnt have as much texture but I feel like theres a trade off because while you can make smoother lines on the hot press, it's not as nice to do your fades once you start actually painting it.
I’m planning on making a new video soon, but making clean lines is way easier forsure on hot press paper. On the cold press there’s a couple tricks, but yeah that’s the trade off, cold press makes a better fade. It helps to have your technique down since it’s less forgiving
God I have been through so many different papers and it pills and is junk.. I’ve almost cried so many times ! Also found when there’s too much texture my line work SUCKS 😢 I’m on dr ph inks .. struggling but persistent. Recovering from spine surgery so making the most of the down time. thank you 🙏 for the info! saw the comment below about the iPad 20 ye old girls 😂 I use an ipad, paint, pencils and paper .. enjoy it all.
I grew up in a tattoo parlor cleaning my uncles guns / shop but yet I have no tattoos though I love tattoos and respect the culture so much. and love drawing with ink and I just wanted to say how much I loved this video. and I am inspired to draw some flashes for the sake of preserving the medium / challenge. Thank you keep it up!
If you look at my other videos you’ll see I’m starting to do instructional painting videos. There’s only so much information I can put into one video. Thanks for the comment.
Leaving a comment to feed the algorithm. Sick knowledge that’ll stand the test of time but come oooon bro stop getting lazy with it and take the paño vid

Support your local art store and don’t shop Amazon!!

Great video! What are the names of the paint colors that you use? Thanks!
Do you sketch with pencil on the watercolor paper before inking? Or do you just freehand with the nib?

Thanks I learned to paint from RUclips videos so I thought it would be helpful to give back some information I’ve learned over the years
you get a flood using an old metal nib that’s imperfect, can’t replicate it .
Great video.
There is nothing anyone can say that will convince me this man isn't related to Steve Carell.
Thanks for the video

Amazing video bro! The end about when things suck paint more flash is the best advice!

When do tou use coffee for stain ? Before or after use watercolor ?
Before. You can stain after with liquid acrylics but not watercolors as they re hydrate

Sharpies also get dull and the line weight will change.
Yep, start out crispy and the paper shreds the nib.
Which red do you use for this painting ? thanks:)
Cadmium red is the pigment color
