Tragic fate of the civilization lies ahead. I don't see any way out. For Europe to stop consume means to slow down the economy to the point when it cannot support the military spendings. How long will it take for Russian and China to get their claws on old Europe? To persons grasping on a one life jacket in the middle of the ocean after a ship went down, cannot share the available resources to save them both. How can we expect nations to be on the same page?
I'm not sure we can either, sadly. It might even require a world-changing event that slows all economies down simultaneously so that we can no longer play the "prisoner's dilemma" game.
