My father and I made the same trip from South Dartmouth, Mass. to Toms River, NJ in an 18' Marshall Sanderling cat boat. We had just the opposite in weather. It was hot with light breezes from the wrong direction. We went through Fischer Island Sound to avoid the "Race:. When we got to the Statue of Liberty, the wind had picked up and we went down Buttermilk Channel and stopped to put in a reef. We had to go outside at Sandy Hook and back in at Manasquan Inlet, down the canal to the Barnegat Bay. I enjoyed your video and it brought back the memory of our trip.
One pleasure of sailing that never gets old is when you shut down the engine, things get quiet, and you proceed under sail alone, as Same does at 1:10. Always enjoyed that.
Love this bloke. Always so positive. Found his channel when I was in Hospital having a nasty operation. Really cheered me up, and aided my recovery. Now back I watch almost everyday. Keep it up Sam. Cheers.
Love that you literally are just showing the sailing aspect of this and how beautiful it really is ! Also wish I could sail from point a to point b like you have been doing that’s quite the skill to have
That’s the kind of sailing I like to see, every time I get a notification from Sam I can’t wait to see his skill of sailing in tight qrts, fog, rain, rough conditions. Nerves of steal is all I can say keep em coming enjoy watching what I would rather be doing right now lol
Another great video. Amazing you keep so positive in the worst of circumstances, crashing waves, broken equipment, flooded cockpit and you smile through it all! A true sailor of courage and determination. You have no one but yourself to rely on and you power through. Your big bumper balls aren’t the only big balls on the Pickled Herring! Safe sailing Sam!!!!!
Nice Sam, I grew up on Long Island Sound in Huntington Bay, the big smoke stacks you went by at night. The weird barge you mentioned as you got close to the city is the infamous Rikers Island jail. Good job picking slack tide, "hells gate" can be challenging to navigate.
Everyone !!! Send this guy some money. Think of what you would pay to go to some B S movie , popcorn and a drink and wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much. Sam... we are all sailing along in our hearts. Stay safe and happy. Jack
Jib out, main in tight when going downwind. Prevents jibes and helps balance the boat, at least in my experience though never used a windvane or auto pilot. Have used bungees to tie off the tiller to the sheet. Sheet pulls the tiller off wind until the forces even out. Fiddly, have to find the right spot on the tiller to balance, waves will still walk the stern around a bit. Love the sail. Great fun watching. Enjoy.
Lol, likely enough going on without doing camera work and commentary. Standard is to lower the main early. I see Sam has a stack pack and lazy jacks so dropping the main really just requires repowering it and letting it fall. The jib is fairly easy to handle and it's on a furler I believe. It can be adjusted for both size and power, also doused by furling very easily even powered up. The engine gets started early as well to warm up and be ready so drop the main, furl the jib and you're driving a power boat. Always prep early, stay cautious and conservative. Get the fenders out well before you are busy with other things, dock lines ready etc. Then just ease in. Anyway that's my expectation but maybe Sam will set the cameras up one day and show us his method. The most amazing thing to me is I can take my small boat out for a day and just sit around sailing the boat and still be completely exhausted at the end. Just don't realize how much I'm constantly steering, adjusting/ trimming sails or resetting on new tacks.
I’ve done this trip a dozen or more times. Be sure to go with the current. IMHO Manhasset Bay is the best jumping off spot for Hell Gate and New York City. Good for provisioning and can also walk to a West Marine store. I would frequently go from Manhasset Bay to Atlantic Highlands, NJ.
Hey Sam, great sailing, as always. You're giving the Pickle a great shake down, by the time you head out across the Atlantic you'll know all her tricks and quirks!
I'm from NYC. I used to run from my apt on 92nd st and 3rd ave. To the FDR drive and run along the river watching little sailboats like yours. Nice memories.
Love your channel Sam! Been following you for a while and really enjoy every minute. Thanks for sharing your great adventure, and the tech.stuff too .Hope to get a Cape Dory 28 soon too .Swedish fish was a great boat too! Be safe and good sailing 🌞🌴⛵🍕🍹
Love the vids🙌🙌👍👍, Love watching your trip southward through eastern Long Island ( the north fork in particular) , a lot of my family still lives in the south hold / Green Port area of eastern Long Island. Plenty of long nights stripe bass fishing right there in Plum Gut near the coffee Pot. Keep them coming and stay safe👌
You sailed through my area where I learned to sail my O'Day 25. Never had the guts to go through Hell Gate though. My sailing area was the area around Stepping Stones and Execution Rocks Lighthouses.
That new Radio you were given is awesome..Perfect for your boat....Next time your in Florida I would love to take a sail with you...Want my own boat someday but don’t know how to sail...Would you ever consider doing sailing lessons ????....I rather pay you than some co. That’s gonna have 5 people all learning..
Nice trip! If you are doing a bit of a refit, you might consider adding a removable solent stay for a hanked on heavy weather jib. Your windward performance and ability to point would be really improved. You just can't get a great sail shape with the rolled up genoa in 20 kn.
lol while in hempstead harbor you were only 5 min from my steel shop ....I have made that steering linkage in a heavier diameter before. make the next one in half inch or better and you we in great shape awesome videos ty
Live life now, while you're young enough and fit enough to enjoy it. I didn't live my life at all - I worked and saved, and now I sit in a chair all day, making comments on YT videos.
I have a perfect view of the East River... I'm kicking myself because I didn't spot you! Those oil barges are a common sight. They bring oil to the power plant shown at 13:12
Thanks for sharing the epic trip. I don't know what is more epic, this trip or the trip to Hawaii. This one has a lot of scenery and obstacles. I like to sail in Long Beach, Calif but I didn't go at all in 2020 because everything was messed up due to covid. Maybe it's getting better and I'll give it a whirl again. :-)
Maybe time to add some wood sides around that cockpit to raise it 10 inches or higher, Getting pooped by a wave can't be fun ! Love your sailing videos ! Cheers
Prop wash has more of an effect then prop walk. Prop wash pushed the bow to port. Consequently the stern went to starboard. Prop wash does not move the stern to port because of the full keel keeps it from moving.
No mamby pamby , crowd funding , because we need a new boat channel here !! You epitomize the just do it motto. Keep up the great videos Sam. Can’t wait for the next episode.
It’s said if you love what you do you never work a day in your life. I’ve just randomly came across Sam’s channel a few weeks ago and I can say that he lives that statement. Truly humbling to watch. Thanks for the pick up, Sir.
At 13:45 you went by my street (85th), had I been at the park (Carl Schurz Park) I would have seen you and waved (airhorn would be more effective, but I don't usually carry an airhorn). Doesn't look like you had too much turbulence at Hell Gate. Good or lucky timing. Great video.
Great video! I hope you will disassemble the WindPilot Pacific and get it ready for your trans-Atlantic. It is a terrific wind vane which has taken many folks around the world, but yours need some TLC. Also, as I've said before, get rid of that Autohelm and get a Pelagic tiller pilot. You won't be sorry you did.
Hey Sam! Love the videos! If possible you should show us a bit of the city that you visit and what you do in that brake. Just a bit. I would be curious 👀
1 minute on the AIS alarm would be much to exciting for me...if someone is steaming down on you it could take some time to figure out best evasive maneuver and then to execute. Having said that anyone who has been watching for awhile knows Sam comes out of some pretty stressful situations safely with boat and smile intact.
Sam, I have a "long" keel 28 foot yacht as well (Buchanan 28) and down wind at speed it starts to surf sideways down the waves. A very strange sensation and the rudder loses grip on the water. Reefing down sorts it out but I wonder if you had the same thing there. Waves don't have to be huge say 3 feet.
Sam! Pickelled Herring needs a dodger! I have always dreamed of making a hard dodger out of recycling a windshield of a motor boat. I think you could actually do it!! Less wet and miserable!
You didn't mention the current going through Hells gate. If you time it right, you let the sound current take you in, hit slack in Hells gate, and let the East River current take you out. The East River has 2 knot current, but when the tide is going out you pick up another 3-4 knots from the tidal current. It can be a wild ride down the East river.
Sailing wave rover has a you tube vid up on how to make his self steering system.maybe worth you take a look.your decent at practcal tasks.love your vids.stay safe
Your videos are amazing...you need to invest in a gopro chest mount or head strap mount. so we can see the full action of you raising the sails and lowering and tieing every thing up that would be cool to see in that perspective....thanks for the amazing video once again.....
You sailed passed us, we’re at City Island, stepping stone light, throggs neck, that barge you menton is a prison. Sailing the east river, ive never done that, always motored.

Hi Sam, I really enjoy watching your videos, I'm learning a lot! I am currently outfitting my boat to start taking some longer sailing adventures myself. In this episode I spotted your fridge, what fridge is that and are you happy with it? It looks like it is about the size I'm looking for.
hey sam! have to say iam impressed sailing alone in a small boat to anywhere! hawaii next stop!! yea long island sound can get rough! that was the coffee pot light in plum gut...plum island though its closing did do germ warfare in the 3rd story of the basement along with animal disease... looks like a nice cruise through the east river hey did you pass jerrys yellow submarine in coney island harbor?? he was a man with a dream
Sam has the distinction of being the only sailing channel sailing! ⛵
‘’How to sail oceans’’ is another channel to check out. The guy does not even have an engine. He crossed the Atlantic twice in 2020.
@@camilledowns-lanctot2564 Kevin is the man! Love Old Sea Dog as well
I agree. Sam is always on the water sailing somewhere.
Sam's bad assed, no doubt about it!
Yep. Most seem to be about boat remodeling and repair.
I think you are the only sailing channel, actually showing "sailing" right now.
Don't worry, when Sam gets to warmer waters, I'm sure he'll do a gratuitous bikini shot.
Sam Holmes has not shifted programming to the seasonal boat show. 😎👍
Everyone. Lets motor into nyc.
Sam. Hell No !
@@Chebab-Chebab I really hope we don't see Sam in a bikini.
@@pdutube Beard, bikini, hairy chest.

I like to sail. I like to watch you sail.

Sam: single hand, at night, 30knots, raining. 😀
Me: 😳

Rain pounding you in the face, stuff falling apart and you still have a smile. A true inspiration to us all. Thanks Sam

Best RUclips sailing channel.
Emphasis on Sailing !
Dude you have so much positive energy, I love it. Always smiling.
Absolutely fearless, but I guess a transPacific crossing marks the eastern seaboard seem like a Sunday cruise on a lake...
Sam you are a damn good sailer. I love watching you sail. I look at every thing that’s going on when you’re sailing

Cant believe you have sailed so far, for so long without AIS and no incidents. You have a guardian angel.
Im a small boat in a big ocean.
