One of the best Claypool performances I have ever seen. This guy continues to be original and ground breakin! As he is wacky! Love his outrageous personality.
That is his fretted six string. He very rarely uses it. His main basses are his fretted 4 string walnut and a six string fretless "Rainbow Bass". The walnut is a 32" scale and was picked up at a pawn shop. The Rainbow was a custom order.
it was the first fretless bass ever made, but Carl puts frets on it and sold it to les right before pork soda les did like it, it was carl thompson who didnt like the thin neck and for everyone who couldnt find this on 5 gallons of diesel: its in the extras
The other bassist is Rob Wasserman. He's awesome. He has several albums out. On the album "Trios" he does a really awesome track entitled "Home is Where You Get Across" with Claypool and the late dobroist Chris Whitely. (sp?)
its one of the first 6 string basses made, in fact it was the very first 6 string fretless made, until it hung around in carl thompsons closet until he added frets to it and sold it to les. the narrow neck is because Mr.Thompson was experimenting with the idea in the 70s when that instrument was made
His main 4 string Carl Thompson's headstock broke at one point, so Les sent it in and got a new one. This new headstock has Geddy Lee's signature on a piece of flamed maple on the headstock. Lucky Les!
And the 6 string fretted was actually the FIRST EVER FRETLESS SIX STRING BASS EVER MADE! Notice the really close string spacing? It lived in Carl Thompsons' closet until he added some frets and sold it to Les.
you will never see those in a music store, weezamon. they actually have a four string on the CT website right now for $8,500 or so. and that's getting off cheap, too considering that it's vintage
Matt Wilkinson whipped us this comparison of Les' 4-string fretted bass over the years. I remember Carl telling me about Les smacking the headstock against something once, so this may be the result. The headstock is definately different, as well as the length of the neck. Perhaps Les went to 34" scale instead of 32"? -Update- Paul N from the board spoke to Carl and he comfirmed that Les' main 4-string is still a 32" scale and not 34". I quote from the Carl Thompson website.
he just uses really high gauge strings. But thats difficult with a really thin high C string becuase it snaps really easy. He had his bass worked on with Mr. Thompson for a while trying to find a way to put such small strings on it. Whatever that man did, he did it right.
this isn't a group..it's a clip from the bammy awards w/ jay Lane (original drummer for primus b4 tim alexander) and Rob Wasserman (ratdog)..improv jam called 3 Guys Named Schmo..I have a copy uploaded also, so I know :D
HOW DARE YOU! Never put Geddy and Les in the same damn sentence. Lee could never rush a candle at Les! I'll admit that Geddy is still a really amazing bassist, but Claypool is in a league of his own!
The song name is "3 guys named Shmoe." Dude on the stand up bass is Rob Wasserman....some jazz bass player...in my opinion this is the only good song the he has. The song just so happens to feature Les Claypool...who provides the best riffs in the song. The song is off Rob Wasserman's album titled "Trios" I belive...
hey theFrizzleFry! i love this video. first time i saw it i ran out and bought dvd diesel dvd I wanted to make a suggestion~ could you add some more to the tags? I was at school and couldn't find it. [three guys named schmo jay lane rob wasserman] thanks in advance 3:P If someone else already asked something then XD
When I watch players like Claypool, my guitar starts to feel empty and I start havin'desire to be a bass player who can play with his fingers that cool...(not with a goddamn pick!..)
now nobody give me crap about this but he kinda looks like Ozzy from the commercials with the cool necklace the long black hair and all black clothing :P
Why would you call someone an idiot over that? In my opinon it's pretty definitive evidence. It even says "Carl told me about Les smanking the headstock". How has Les' bass never changed if you say it's gotten an ebony venier added to it? I've heard of and seen pictures of Les bringing it into the shop and getting an entirely new neck for it. Which is a pretty crazy operation, considering that it's not bolt-on.
can anyone tell me what kind of instrument is Les playing! I am a bass player and i have never seen anything like this. It has six strings but to narrow neck for a six string bass???? The neck seems to be wide enough for a 5 string bass
I like this hair better then his cornrow, dreadlock, bald hair days. Whatever the fuck that was. Back when he was in Primus he had it. Claypool is god!
sorry u guys im a big rush fan and my bro told me to watch this and that is wat i came up in my head and don't call me dumbshit cuz i dunno shit about les but i like him as a bassist but ged is really good and im a drummer so ya
One of the best Claypool performances I have ever seen.
This guy continues to be original and ground breakin! As he is wacky! Love his outrageous personality.
this is a SERIOUS jam. amazing.
holy shit! its Rob Wasserman!!! what a duo they make! last time i heard them together was on a Chris Whitley song
les is so cool, thanks for putting us this vid
it's Rob Wasserman. Les, Rob and chris whitley have a track on Rob's album "Trios" from many years ago. Pretty cool track.
That is his fretted six string. He very rarely uses it. His main basses are his fretted 4 string walnut and a six string fretless "Rainbow Bass". The walnut is a 32" scale and was picked up at a pawn shop. The Rainbow was a custom order.
dude that kicked ass. 5 stars, that was awesome
TREMLO BOWING!!!
Les Claypool is God
Rob Wasserman. This is called 3 Guys named Schmo and is on the 5 Gallons of diesel DVD as an extra.
Just proof that the rhythmn section can jam and make it sound real good...which me...as a guitarist could not except as possible before!!!
it was the first fretless bass ever made, but Carl puts frets on it and sold it to les right before pork soda
les did like it, it was carl thompson who didnt like the thin neck
and for everyone who couldnt find this on 5 gallons of diesel:
its in the extras
this is probly one of les's best vids i think
The other bassist is Rob Wasserman.
He's awesome. He has several albums out. On the album "Trios" he does a really awesome track entitled "Home is Where You Get Across" with Claypool and the late dobroist Chris Whitely. (sp?)

Love the hair

It's just an improv thing, and the drummer is Jay Lane, and the guy on the upright is Rob Wasserman.
This is Three Guys Named Schmo Starring Les Rob Wasserman and Jane lane. Awesome song!
you will never see those in a music store, weezamon. they actually have a four string on the CT website right now for $8,500 or so. and that's getting off cheap, too considering that it's vintage
very cool, 1st time I saw this
You see custom, hand crafted Carl Thompson basses in a music store? Methinks not.
Although Les found his first CT in a pawn shop. Lucky SOB.
hey, this is 3 guys named shmoe, its jay lane, rob wasserman and of course les. its 5 gallons of diesel as others have said.
thats probably about the best intro ever :D
I can see that it is a Carl Thompson Custom but i could not tell it apart from a regular 6 string bass . NapoleonXV- thanks fot the information!
This is called '3 Guys Named Schmo' The other bassist's name is Rob Wasserman. It's on 5 gallons of Diesel.
I believe so. I'm not sure if it was just the drummer or him and Rob wasserman that played with Ratdog but yeah... there's a connection.
very nice. good bow technique
I thought the video was still on youtube but i guess not....Its on the 5 gallons of diesel DVD.
damn, the only place where I'll be able to jam out with one of those is in my dreams
todd huth was the original guitarist for primus, the drummer, I think, is Jay Lane. who was also an early drummer for primus in the late 80's.
damn straight my friend, damn straight :)
yeah that is a sweet way to start a bass solo
He used it often for the Wales and Woes studio work.
Matt Wilkinson whipped us this comparison of Les' 4-string fretted bass over the years. I remember Carl telling me about Les smacking the headstock against something once, so this may be the result. les has a carl thompson bass. i believe his is called a rainbow bass .theyre custom made made. if u go to their website itll tell u all about it.
he just uses really high gauge strings. But thats difficult with a really thin high C string becuase it snaps really easy. He had his bass worked on with Mr. Thompson for a while trying to find a way to put such small strings on it.
Whatever that man did, he did it right.
No he doesn't he uses 40-100 instead of 45-105 which is light
I am trying to pay Les attention
this isn't a group..it's a clip from the bammy awards w/ jay Lane (original drummer for primus b4 tim alexander) and Rob Wasserman (ratdog)..improv jam called 3 Guys Named Schmo..I have a copy uploaded also, so I know :D
yeah guess so.
Thanks for the info.
nice upright
i want one
Les Claypool playing... something cool! xD
Ive seen him play live with a Rickenbacker and a J-bass.
HOW DARE YOU!
Never put Geddy and Les in the same damn sentence. Lee could never rush a candle at Les! I'll admit that Geddy is still a really amazing bassist, but Claypool is in a league of his own!
His favorite band is Rush :)
man that guy has a 6 string upright!!!! ME WANTTT
HES THE BASSGOD :D
Les is what you get when you mix Rush, Metallica, Larry Grahm, and a hint of Muenster
The song name is "3 guys named Shmoe." Dude on the stand up bass is Rob Wasserman....some jazz bass player...in my opinion this is the only good song the he has. yes
Don't forget a dash of Frank Zappa every now and then.
Far out.
Lea is awesome.
lol it looks like hes trying to imitate Geddy Lee, with the hair, and the hopping
it is i ripped it from the dvd
hey theFrizzleFry!
i love this video. first time i saw it i ran out and bought dvd diesel dvd
I wanted to make a suggestion~ could you add some more to the tags? I was at school and couldn't find it.
[three guys named schmo jay lane rob wasserman]
thanks in advance 3:P
If someone else already asked something then XD
its all in the bass dude
When I watch players like Claypool, my guitar starts to feel empty and I start havin'desire to be a bass player who can play with his fingers that cool...(not with a goddamn pick!..)
Nahh it's really him. This is on Five Gallons of Diesel, his solo DVD.
If he had glasses he would look like Geddy here.
I think his bass is also called like a Piccolo bass or something cuz it's a higher octave or some shit like that .
definitely possible, i can't come up with a better explanation
The one with the electric bass
I would like to point out that geddy lee's signature is on the headstock les's favorite 4 string. just sayin
now nobody give me crap about this but he kinda looks like Ozzy from the commercials with the cool necklace the long black hair and all black clothing :P
les looks like one of the backstreet boys!
STANDING OVATION!!
WHO is that guy that isn't les?
ehi guyz...that doublebass player's Ferruccio Spinetti..
spacca i QLEE
I want my bass to sound like that. Jesus.
nah thats actually pretty good on a electric upright :P
That would be Rob Wasserman on the upright
maaaaaaan...is that fucking groovy or what
it is called a Rainbow bass
looks like an electric upright bass that les is playing or mabie an electric chello
I love how people get on here and trash others for something they can't do themselves.
holy shit that's an awesome upright, also, les' hair is awesome, he should never have cut it
@fuck668 Les is playing the 6 string CT, not the Whamola.
marco rodi is the best bassest, but les comes really close
check marco rodi out, hes really good
Why would you call someone an idiot over that? In my opinon it's pretty definitive evidence. It even says "Carl told me about Les smanking the headstock".
How has Les' bass never changed if you say it's gotten an ebony venier added to it? I've heard of and seen pictures of Les bringing it into the shop and getting an entirely new neck for it. Which is a pretty crazy operation, considering that it's not bolt-on.
HEY!
Thats a 5 string upright fretless bass
can anyone tell me what kind of instrument is Les playing! I am a bass player and i have never seen anything like this. It has six strings but to narrow neck for a six string bass???? The neck seems to be wide enough for a 5 string bass
Fucking amazing. Pardon my language, but yeah. Fantastico.
I like this hair better then his cornrow, dreadlock, bald hair days. Whatever the fuck that was. Back when he was in Primus he had it. Claypool is god!
LOL @ severus snape!
His 6 string fretted CT
no idea, sorry
its from the "5 gallons of diesel"
haha, its so true
Rob went harder.
You mean except the horn that was added for balancing?
that's jay lane
That electric bass work was shocking. Or maybe I just didn't get it.
its the same 6 string bass he's been using forever. if u look in a music store u will see them.
the accoustic bass owned Les ..the solo was very odd and nice
is jay lane wearing a primus shirt?
is this when les tried out for sabbath?
and it looks like the thing on the right is the thing that1guy plays
it's just a 6 string electric upright bass
Rob Wasserman
was this from the early "Sailing" tour?
has it occured to you that Clive is modeled after Les?
its a 6 string carl thompson
sorry u guys im a big rush fan and my bro told me to watch this and that is wat i came up in my head and don't call me dumbshit cuz i dunno shit about les but i like him as a bassist but ged is really good and im a drummer so ya
