  • Angiotensin 2 receptor blocker (antagonist) pharmacology review. Mechanism of action vs ACE inhibitors, how ARBs work, side effects, example medications, indications, and contraindications explained.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) decrease the effects of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), similar to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers function to treat hypertension (raised blood pressure), heart failure, and renal disease through their effects on the kidneys and blood vessels.

Thank you for this comprehensive overview of Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs). Your video covers the mechanism of action, mnemonic, indications, side effects, and contraindications in a clear and organized manner.
The mnemonic "ARB" (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers) is an effective memory aid, simplifying the main effects of ARBs on systemic vascular resistance and blood volume. The breakdown of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and its physiological implications on blood pressure regulation is well-explained, providing a solid foundation for understanding ARB action.
Your detailed discussion on indications, especially in hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and renal protection in conditions like diabetic nephropathy, offers valuable clinical insights. The comparison with ACE inhibitors, emphasizing the lower incidence of cough and angioedema with ARBs, is particularly useful for clinicians.
The side effects mnemonic "LOSARTAN" is an effective tool for recalling low blood pressure, other mild symptoms, swelling, allergic reactions, raised potassium, teratogenic effects, acute kidney injury, and nasal congestion. This mnemonic aids in quick recall and reinforces the importance of monitoring patients for these potential adverse effects.
Finally, the discussion on contraindications, including caution with hypotension, potential cross-reactivity with ACE inhibitors in cases of angioedema, hyperkalemia risk, teratogenicity, and renal considerations, provides a well-rounded understanding of when to be cautious or avoid ARBs.
Overall, your video serves as a valuable resource for both students and healthcare professionals, offering a thorough understanding of ARBs in a digestible format. Keep up the excellent work in making complex medical topics easy to comprehend.

But if the Bradykinin is elevated from the ACE inhibitors, and creates chronic inflammation, you will still have high blood pressure from the Cortisol levels right?

Hi just one comment, its not that obvious anymore that patients who had angioedema after ACEIs are not able to take ARBs. There is more to it. See the uptodate for example.
