Those diuretics actually trick the kidney into retaining more sodium and water! I learned about this in med school. Your kidneys filters blood and this filtrate goes trough many U shaped tubes(simplified). Mark's problem is in the late part of the "tube system", normally where most of the water is retained in the presence of a hormone called aldosterone. Mark HAS this hormone, but the tubes DON'T respond to it due to genetic defect. There is a sensor for how salty your urine is right after the place where this diuretic works. Since the diuretic blocks sodium retention more of it is left in the tubes. The sensor signals more salt+water has to be retained from the tubes. When a normal person takes this diuretic the effect is minor relative to the amount of the urine lost.
I watched the documentary on this guy a couple years ago now. I hope his condition has improved since then!

I actually have a similar condition, its also called diabeted insipidus, but luckily my issue is that i dont produce the hormone which his kidneys cant process. So if i take it in pills, i can live relatively normally.

it's weird because primary diabetes insipidus causes your thalamus to stop excreting ADH (anti diurtetic hormone) so to me using diuretics seems counterproductive, that being said, if it's nefrogenic problem i think diuretics can help him, but what i think is that they made a voice over mistake, and the doctor prescribed anti diuretics. that's what i think atleast

I drink 3-5 water bottles a day
Use a larger container (but not too big to carry easily) and you WILL drink more. I exclusively drink from a 48 oz water bottle and it's impossible to drink under a gallon a day. I don't even track but have to be drinking 4 of them a day including like 60 oz to start the day
I get water intoxicated on WAY less than the amount they quoted. Maybe 5L on a hot day and I'm out. I keep emergency chips in thr car.
