When the dealer laughed at me for not buying and telling him I'd wait the market out until they lowered prices, he didn't believe my willpower. It's been two years, and I WILL NOT buy a car that was $30k a few years ago for $50k. You can go kick rocks. The whirr of an electric motor is not what sold the Mustang to the public. It was the classic design and the roar of the ICE. There's a real reason that Toyota refuses to play along with the EV craze. EVs just don't add up. They're an untried technology that have too many problems on their own let alone not having the infrastructure. What good is a vehicle that creates more environmental problems before it even gets on the assembly line? It's all about the politics of power and control and not anything to do with the environment. Electric vehicles just don't fit in and don't make any sense.

I used to think that the market would eventually correct, and prices would come down, which is how a free market is supposed to work in the capitalist system. Now I'm starting to believe that prices will stay high, dealers will go out of business, workers will get laid off at the factories. Eventually the supply will be curtailed, and then they'll be a vehicle shortage and prices will go up again.

I've gotten at least 3 offers from Nissan dealers over the past few years to sell my car back. Curious about the market, I checked Kelly Blue Book and was astounded at the prices for this car on the used market. The new Z car that replaced my car last year is priced easily in the $50k to $70K range with obscene dealer markups. In talking to a salesman at a Nissan dealer one day, I was told that they can't figure out why the new Z is not selling. He told me that prospective buyers who approach the car walk away after reading the prices on the windows. I told him that I wouldn't be interested in spending $30K more for a car that is not even as good as the one I have.

The automotive industry needs a new business model where:
    1. The customer orders the vehicle directly from the manufacturer
    2. The vehicle is customized by the customer and priced accordingly.
    3. The vehicle is manufactured after the customer submits a down payment.
    4. Customer waits.
    5. The vehicle is delivered to the customer.
The days of high volume / low margin are over for the personally owned vehicle market. The automotive industry needs to focus on build to order, product quality and an open architecture for upgrades with after market, non-safety critical, features, such as consoles, heated seats, etc. The customers drive the market, not the government or the industry. Failure to adapt is certain bankruptcy.

So instead of thousands of dealers competing for your business you want to narrow that down to maybe 4-8? That makes zero sense. Also who's going to take your trade? Most people have no idea how hard it is to sell a vehicle on your own. Let alone when everyone else is doing it. If you're upset dealers charged over MSRP don't shop at them. There's literally thousands to pick from. Nobody is forcing you to pay a certain price. Shop around, wait ect. People who are not part of the industry have no idea what direct sales means. Trust me. I've heard horror stories about customers ordering Ford Mavericks and they didn't order with cruise control. Dealer just took the order exactly how customer wanted. And customer was upset it didn't have it. They choose to order direct and that's the result.

However, with supply issues over the past few years, many places are finally able to get their orders filled and are catching up from several years of nothing. My medium-sized police department is replacing almost half of our fleet this year (6 new Explorers, 5 new F150s) because we haven't gotten any new vehicles for 3 years. Ford canceled all of our orders. The Ford vehicles were ARE getting are from other sources, as Ford still hasn't delivered the vehicles we ordered in November. 2 years ago, there were agencies near me that had orders for 30+ Explorers and Ford canceled their orders. This week we purchased a new honda. We went to 2 different Honda dealers and both lots were full of people. At the Honda dealer we purchased from they had 8 - 9 people in different offices discussing vehicles. Our salesperson said that 2024 had been a great year so far and he hoped it continued. Im sure Toyota is the same. From what I am seeing you commentary is spot on. Ford and RAM are begging people to come and the media is full of local dealer ads. Rarely do we hear a Honda, Toyota, Nissian, or Subaru ads. PS: Just a note - Honda was aggressive in their dealing with us - they wanted to sell a car and was willing to work hard for the sale.

Ford gave up on low margin cars and it will hurt them forever because of that. However, Honda can sell 5 cars and it wouldn't make for the profits of 1 superduty. Cars are cheap and expensive to build now days. So they try and capture the backend fiance ect.

@@andrewpansch7447And then Honda has 5 customers instead of 1. When those 5 "cheap car" customers need to graduate into something bigger and more expensive, they will be far more likely to stay with Honda. This is why Toyota and Honda do not abandon compact car offerings. They also happen to make money in them. Abandoning small cars is short sighted on Ford's part and they will/are feeling the negative effects.

Last week I went to look at a Toyota Tacoma and a Honda Ridgeline. Both had been in short supply until recently and the Tacoma still is if you want a particular color/model. I think I was the only customer in at either dealership (weekday). After looking at and trying out and pricing those options I ordered a Ford F150 base model regular cab. For my needs it was the best combination of features/capability and the lowest cost. I think I see as many Toyota tv adds as I do from Ford but don't see much from Honda or Subaru. For what it is worth.

I currently own the most expensive car I've ever purchased. a 2016 Fusion I got in 2020 for 15k. It's getting new shocks and mounts today (mounts rusted). Could very well be my last vehicle, since I am near retirement. My first car was a '76 Chevy Monza for $500(also used).

I went onto a large motorcycle dealership just the other day. I just want to look at the bikes and not really purchase one because I am getting older. I was pleased to see affordable prices. Very close to pre covid prices actually. I saw bikes that can get 80 miles to the gallon as well.
