Seiko SARB035 Automatic Dress Watch Review - Plus Comparison To My Legendary SARB033

  • After the success of my SARB033 and many requests to check out its cream dialed brother, I borrow a SARB035 and review it. This was originally intended as a domestic Japanese release only for Seiko, but now thankfully is available at my most trusted online watch retailer of choice, Long Island Watches. The SARB and SARG series continue to be the sweet spot in Seiko range, offering unbelievable higher end quality, style and rock solid reliability for a staggeringly low price. So it's only logical that I take a look and compare it to my current reigning champion of the duels, the beloved SARB033.

    I've had the SARB035 for around 1 year now, and it has actually made me look forward to going out every morning even when I felt lazy. I even wore it at home for a while because I couldn't leave it in the box! It's a gorgeous watch, a joy to look and wear. Couldn't be happier about it, glad I got one before prices went up.

    You know ever time I get a new Seiko I'm pleased. The other day I was upset one broke, it wasn't worth fixing, and then I remembered it was 40 years old, and prob never serviced. It still looked great. How many things on earth that are mass produced you can say that about.

      I have the SARB 035 Cream dial and bought it for 400. Once they discontinued it the price has almost DOUBLED but I STILL HAD TO HAVE THE 033 BLACK DIAL. I had to purchase from Japan to get a lower price and STILL was around 700 dollars. I love them. They are OUSTANDING.

      Henry Nguyen I was also a little sceptical while buying the 035 but the offer was so good that I got it just for $250.
      Now that I have both the 035 and 033 I must say that both of them have a different kind of vibe to them.
      They don’t feel the same and I am enjoying that.
      I think you should also consider having a 035.

    It's a sports watch that is equally water resistant as the Oyster Perpetual 36/39mm, which is also a sports watch. Both the OP's and the SARB's are sports watches. They have lume, a steel bracelet, a date and a seconds hand, which squarely makes them dressy sportswatches rather than sporty dresswatches.
    As far as swimming and showering is concerned: Been doing that to my SARB033 for two years now, never had an issue. Perfectly possible with a 100m WR watch, although too hot showers and steam baths are silly no matter which watch you have.

    Great reviews as usual! I bet this watch could withstand a jungle expedition thought, as well as excursions into the pool. 100 meters is no slouch. My dad wore a 1969 Seiko 5 with a press-fit "waterproof" back through the Vietnam war and it kept running until the 1980s. Few people want to test it on their watch, of course, but I bet these things can take some abuse and keep running just fine. Cheers, and thanks for the great videos!

  • @kriztu
    @kriztu 8 лет назад +1

    hi TGV! I would just like to add something, I don't know if others have already mentioned it, but there is one more difference between the 033 and 035 besides the two that you've mentioned. The 035 has a black line running down the middle of the hour and minute hands to provide more contrast to the creamy dial. you wont see that on the 033. Good review as always, cheers!

    I own both the Sarb033 and Sarb035 and can testify that these watches are great. 38 mil is good, I have larger wrists so wouldn't have minded 40 mil. I kinda wish the Sarb033 was more white than cream but you can't go wrong with either.

      +stephen rhodes Very true, as somebody who is a little reluctant to invest the big bucks for the grand Seiko, its a nice alternative. Sure, it hasn't got that amazing movement, but I have grown to really love the and respect the 6R15, its a cracking little movement.

      I know what you mean. For a while there i was contemplating the purchase of the Snowflake but with the Explorer in the pipeline it made more sense to go for a classic Seiko instead.
      A heads up for anybody who may be interested. There's a day/date version currently available in the UK market. It's pretty similar, sizing, dial, crystal, caseback etc, etc, etc. I was offered one just the other day for £225, pretty good value considering the RRP is £285.

    TGV, there are 3 differences between the 033 and the 035. The dial, the date window and the 033 has white lines on the hands whereas the 035 has black lines. Only noticed myself this week. Own the 033 and about to buy an 035. Love these watches. 😊

    Got my SARB035 a while back and the 033 review really helped bolster my confidence in buying one(including persuasion from numerous WUS posts). Great review. Also I'm pretty sure the SARB035 is sapphire on top and hardlex on the bottom as my research and memory serves me correctly.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  9 лет назад

      +R8Prototype So glad to hear, that really pleases me greatly. When I hear that I gave somebody the confidence to pull the trigger and they are pleased, that really makes my day. It really is the sweet spot for Seiko, as you can obviously now can attest to.

  • @tom1399

    With the Seiko Sarb033 & 35 you get Sapphire on the front, and then Hardlex on the display back. You also missed that the Sarb35 has black stripes added to the hands to make them that little more prominent against the off-white face.
    In my opinion the black faced 033 looks better on the bracelet whereas the off-white 035 is better for an array of different coloured straps and is definitely my go to dress watch.

    I LOVE Seiko's mid tier automatics and have been wanting to get one of their dressier models. I know you love your 033, but no matter how much I hear how great it is, it just doesn't pull me in aesthetically. I didn't have that personal attraction to the 033, but I have to say, the 035 may have me hooked. I certainly tend more towards black dials than white, but that subtle cream color pulls together the whole understated yet refined aesthetic together. I'm not typically one for bracelets either, but I may just be converted on that front as well.
    Wonderful looking piece!

    I think someone had mentioned this in the comments on another video, but that's just what the Japanese do from cars to restaurants--the domestic product/venue is just so much more refined. It's cool though, since it's one of those things you have to go to and experience, and for watches, just adds more thrill to THE HUNT!

    I've loved this Seiko SARB033 since discovering it 2yrs ago. It looks every bit as classy as an Omega Aqua Terra and the Grand Seiko. The only fault I can think of is that it doesn't have a lock-down crown, a major requirement for me. Great show!

  • @HarryUnchained

    It certainly a beautiful watch. I flipped my Sumo to get this. I'm kind of tired with dive watches. I've had MM300, Sumo and some other divers in the past but they are heavy. Not really for everyday use. I was looking for a smaller diver but I really couldn't find one. Most of them are now 42-44mm. 39-40 would be my preference. So I'm currently waiting for this watch from Japan with a colareb siena stand by to swap with the bracelet for more casual wear.

    I just wanted to say that watching your review of the SARB035 made me fall in love with this watch! I have Amazon prime so I ordered this watch and when it arrived from CW everything was beautiful except it needed another link. Like a rookie I didn't understand that I could have bought it through Long Island Watch. I sent a email to Marc at LIWC and asked him if I could order 2 extra links. He joked with me and said that he almost deleted my request because I didn't purchase it from him but said he would be happy to help me. Now you have to understand that I payed the same price from CW and I also ordered two extra links from LIWC. The total came to $440.00 and I'm really happy with that price! I'm going to order the SARB033 from Marc at LIWC in the very near future and use that extra link! Thanks again for your beautiful 4K quality review of this great time piece that all my family and friends love.

    Purchased the Sarb035 a couple weeks ago when it was available through Amazon Canada. Quickly snatched it up, and an hour or so later, there was no more stock. Happy with it so far. The cream/ivory dial with the indices and hands are gorgeous! The needle like seconds hand is so thin and looks amazing. I have it settle to +5 seconds a day so far. Hopefully it can be under 5 seconds a day, but I can live with this. I rather not open the case yet. I wear it on a leather strap for the weight and the looks. I have several more leather straps coming since it is a strap monster!

Mine shares space with several German and Swiss luxury brands, yet somehow it's the watch I can't seem to stop reaching for. Endless band options, rugged as most divers and comfort beyond belief. Buy one ASAP if you're an oyster fan.

    A terrific review. Gives a person an appetite for either watch. Which can be a dangerous thing since I'm too often spending money. Says a lot about these reviews, though.

    At first glance I thought it was going to be too simple looking for my tastes, but I can see the elegance in its simplicity. I see the similarity you spoke of with the Grand Seiko, but the 035 I like better. Sadly, it's below my minimum case width. :(

    The contrast used in their design has been successful in making you think (and say it) that the date on the 033 is black :) Hat off Seiko, Hat off

    I’d consider both of these watches, the 035 more specifically because of the white dial, to be sports watches. It has that Rolex Datejust feel to it. Casual enough for jeans and a t shirt, khakis or chinos and a nice polo or, on the right strap, elegant enough for a suit. It’s an amazing looking every day watch and I am buying one when I get home from my deployment! It’s sitting in my cart right now...along with a G Shock and some other watch accessories lol.

    Just a small correction: The Seiko SRB033/035 has a sapphire crystal on the front. It's the window on the back that is hardlex crystal. An interesting comparison would be with your Tudor Prince OysterDate. I know they aren't in the same price range but since they are similar in style and function it would be interesting to know what you're geting in the Tudor for the additional substantial amount that you don't get with the Seikos.

    TGV, excellent review and comparison between the 033 and 035. I'm wearing my 033 as a I write this, and I have to say that I often find myself looking at it admiringly several times throughout the day. I think it's an absolutely *beautiful* watch, so elegantly and crisply designed, and I love the sexy curved lugs with the brushed counterpoint top surfaces. It catches light unlike anything I own. I have mine on a black Hirsch 'gator imprint leather strap and it's an absolute stunner!

    • @Eltercero
      @Eltercero 9 лет назад

      +Eltercero PS One of the things that's unusual about a watch in this price range, and I have one other Seiko 5 Auto, is that the cost of maintenance may almost make them disposable. I have an Omega Co-Axial chronograph, which requires maintenance (about a grand) every 10 years or so, and about $500 every 5 years; but with a Seiko like this, I wonder how much the maintenance will be, and will it be worth it.

  • @8BRInteractive
    @8BRInteractive 7 лет назад

    Judging from the spec sheet and the regulator, the movement looks like a Standard-grade ETA 2824-2, which is perfectly acceptable and expectable at this price bracket. I don't mind the Hardlex on the back, or on the front, for that matter. In fact, I own a 35mm Longines Conquest Heritage which, in keeping with the vintage revival theme, has a Hesalite (acrylic) crystal on the front and, quite honestly, there's a bit of exaggeration about acrylic's tendency to pick up scratches: if you don't bash the crystal about on hard things like furniture, corridor corners, doors and the like, and if you wear a shirt or a sweater under your favorite leather jacket, it won't get scratched. That said, the SARBs are fine watches. If they were officially imported in Europe and the United States, they'd compare favorably with the Swatch Group's Certinas, which are very good watches in their own right, use similar movement grades and are also similarly priced.
