Colin, we Listened to your thoughts in the video review about the price, thank you very much, We have now reduced the price to $35 and it is also boxed. why not lower the price and offer more?
Very well done review Colin. I love the way you edit and film your videos. Very polished. Thank you for taking the time to check this out. Beyond functionality/Price. I find it so absolutely cool that this is just in existence. We're working on a making a complete in box version at no extra price.
I can say that the ROM by ComradeOJ is floating around somewhere on the internet and that it works with flash cartridges, but I will not give a link or the ROM, because ComradeOJ is probably getting money too from sold cardridges. If you are broke and super interested, then you can find it.
Hey, that's me! I go by GenesisGameGenie on youtube though, but ComradeOj elsewhere. The ROM is totally free. I made the ROM download first, and the physical releases came later. I made a deal with a few people for physical releases though. You can download the ROM and many other genesis software on my website at mode5.net/
I'd like to see the ROM image released free, so those with either their own ability to flash EPROM's, or have flash carts, can use that route as well. Still sell the physical cart for those who want something like that dedicated, but I'd like to see a ROM file of this as well.
It doesn't look like you opened the cartridge in the video, but you mention it uses a custom-designed circuit board. Is this custom cartridge tied to the software in some way to help it accomplish these tests, or can the cartridge ROM be dumped and still function properly alongside my other testing tools on a flash cartridge?
I wonder if there are some developers who develop cartridges using microcontroller, such as rp2040. Using this chip to increase the data memory capacity, save data and reduce the production cost. I hope the chip with 16mb serial flash memory could help the developers create and produce games easier and cheaper
That is a really cool cartridge! I'd probably buy one just to have, I have a few Genesis models in my collection, they should all work although my CD unit is buggered a bit. It seems like this only tests the core console, and not the 32x or CD units?
Lol, I don't know why I was expecting this test cartridge to be more interesting. It really is just a hardware testing cartridge. Maybe its red color made me thing there was something more cool about it.
Ranger X, Atomic Robo Kid, Rocket Knight adventures are 3 MUST MUST play genesis titles, you should check those out one day in the future, in addition to streets of rage1-3 of course
Could you tell me what the background music is, that's playing throughout the video? (Yes, I'm aware the info says "Epidemic Sound", and you've supplied a link to their site, but that doesn't help me find the tune that's playing at all, I need a track title or name. Too many RUclips videos do this same thing of not giving the actual track's name, and it's really, really, annoying... because it's impossible to track down, especially when linked to Epidemic sound when they have a huge library I'm not willing to sift through).
Great thing for those who work with those consoles, but I would prefer that retro bit snes adapter that would work in things like supaboy and play the genesis titles. Not sure if it can handle 32x.
Emulator accuracy test too? I do know Gens did not emulate address errors properly or at all so a lot of old Sonic hacks fail on modern emulators or real hardware
If i was SEGA, i would be flattered. I personally always wonder what these companies think of the retro gaming scene. It would make me happy that people where still into something i created 20 years ago, ya know?
Most of the time with ps1 it's always the disc drive not working, typically on the older models the drive goes. I've RARELY encountered another problem with the ps1
I have a PS1 where the sound completely fucks up and makes a bleeping noise during the actual gameplay scenes in Um Jammer Lammy. It works just fine in the rest of the game, and I haven't found any other game where it acts up like this.
Eddie hmm, thats odd. If you have tried multiple other games in the same ps1 and it has no issues with other games. I would say that may just be your un jammer lammy disc. Try taking it to a local game store and asking them to resurface it for you. They may charge 2 bucks at most if that.
I have two genuine copies of that game (Lammy is my waifu), and I've also tried with a burnt disc. The same genuine copies work just fine when I run them on my Japanese PSOne.
I modded a PS1 for someone, and they said that it worked with every game except their import copy of un jammer lammy, They purchased a Japanese ps1 in order to play that particular game. Not sure if this is helpful information, but it's a relating story
Awesome, Thanks for the feedback. Based on Colin and John Riggs video about the test cartridge, a good amount of people commented on the price. I wanted to do something about that, so that's why the next batch will be a nice CIB version. We do run sales on our site and other promotional events such as that. But I didn't feel that was enough.
I do lots and lots of repairs on pretty much every console. The purpose of that is so that one day emulation wont be the only way to play older games. I'm trying my hardest
What I really want for my genesis is a save state cart for those uber difficult genesis games that you can't make it past the first level. We all know which title's I'm referring too.
RETRO GAMING ARTS outstanding comix zone would be one of my favorite game's on genesis, having a save state feature would blow your mind. Sega CD Eye of the Beholder, I used a hexeditor on the save state for this particular title, found each stat much like the DOS version. Which I've already made a video of this process but Sega CD has no proaction or game shark or game genie. That's why I'd like for a cartridge be designed if not already for save States as I can physically edit each line of game code. But definitely repro Comix Zone, Contra Hard Corps, Bloodlines.

RETRO GAMING ARTS....buy at RGA dot com
You the man Michael
Is this product still a thing? Can it be obtained in 2023?
I used this tool massively to diagnose my mega drive's Z80's memory. works as a charm.

@@GenesisGameGenie you're a cool guy
@@GenesisGameGenie Thanks a lot I just downloaded it!
@@vengeancewaffle1175 I'm glad this old chunk of software is still being used!
Some of those tests towards the end are veeery reminiscent of the 240p test suite.
I was thinking the same thing, like a carbon copy clone.
They're pretty common test patterns, you'll find screens very similar to these in a lot of screen calibration tools.
Did you try it in an At-Games console for kicks?
Jamin Warren
Lol it's gonna fail hard, especially at the soundtest.
@@WH250398 No kidding.

The ROM is available separately from ComradeOj, so if you already have a flashcart it should work.

I wish the price was a bit lower and it would be helpful if they had this for all consoles.
What about if it came complete in box? That's what we are currently working on for the next batch
Cool product. Thanks for reviewing!!
That cost is way too high. No tester cart should be the price of a normal video game. The price point of 20~25$ is a lot better.
James Maple, Thank you for understanding.
Wow I'm actually somewhat early for once, perfect video to watch before I go to school!
Dionicio3 King_Of_Skiddos Nice
I wonder how it would work on a clone console, especially one of the new ones
Personally I have not tried it on a clone console (don't own any)

It is just a hardware testing cartridge, but isn't that cool in itself? I do find the red to be very nice aswell
I got a question i got a model-1 high Definition one and it read some game n some games don’t what I think is the game contact pins or other thing.
Don't have a Genesis, but I know someone that sells retro consoles that could use this.
I wish I still had contact with him.

The site is down, what happen to the Test Card ?
Every time I hear "Hey everyone it's Colin" I immediately then think of GI Joe and "Stop all the downloading" video
PierreVonStaines What
Master Channel 8000 just do a search on youtube for GI Joe PSA computer 👍
Amazing that you have this and thanks alot for showing us it but can you also please test it on a 32X 😁👍 i love your content

Just curious, did both of your console bench at 3227?
I wonder if the rom will work on a mega everdrive?
It will
RETRO GAMING ARTS got a copy and tested it ?
Great thing for those who work with those consoles, but I would prefer that retro bit snes adapter that would work in things like supaboy and play the genesis titles. Not sure if it can handle 32x.
You know what i always wanted to see, more 32x games, I wanted to see what that little failed accessory was actually capable of, ya know?
Maybe if someone can make a fully featured portable like the 3rd version of that supaboy but in a way that it can play the early sega consoles.
I've had this question for a while now, but is that an alphasmart neo in your intro?
AnorakTrend Then Nothing
Colin please tell me you use a better connection than composite with your Genesis!
He probably does while playing, but for testing just use composite, i test everything in composite aswell, it's quick and easy
Well I hope it's the case
Emulator accuracy test too? I do know Gens did not emulate address errors properly or at all so a lot of old Sonic hacks fail on modern emulators or real hardware
Danika Sidoti Yeah
Not for Mega Drive only the Phil Collins/Bible computer from the US.
I wonder what SEGA thinks about this type of accessory

nice vid! keep it up!
If you have a flashcart will the rom on this work?
yes
is there a ROM to use it with everdrive :) ?
1:29 Wa I Amazing Video Tested
I would buy it if it work on the cheap clone consoles
I wish there was something like this for the PS1.

That is expensive but time is money so IF it saves on repair time than it could be worth it.
For the same price what if it came complete in box? that's what we're working on as of now. your thoughts?
Complete in box at the same price point would be a nice touch. Store it in style along with your games when not in use.

At some point emulation will be the only way to play older games especially with consoles with disc and hard drives.

Will it test Sega CD add-on?
