I like how the poem or I guess song in this case doesn’t really say the old Gods like Odin and such are fake or something alike. The way it’s described, it makes it seem like the Vikings thought the Norse gods were still real, but they had taken the side of God. They fear God’s wrath but also acknowledge their own god’s rage at the betrayal. Sounds like the buildup to a war between religions in that case if they are describing both of them to be real.

I think the thing about the poem talking about being an enemy of Odin and accepting Christ as his god was talking about how either how the poet may take another point of view and have fun around with it, a bit of silly taboo, I would say. But obviously, and historically, I think this refers to the Vikings, or specifically the mercenary and raiding norsemen and Danes who settled in Christian lands such as mainly England/Scotland/Ireland and so on, and accepted Danegeld and slowly over time, they would assimilate into the mainland European culture and Christianity. These would have been men who would carry over Scandinavian traditions and customs and introduce them to the culture, who were slowly merging over time. This also includes, religion, and this case being Christianity and they would slowly abandon some of their pagan roots. Or In the case of For Honor, though there is little or no evidence, my speculation is that some Vikings may have even turned on their clans and kin to join other factions for money, food, Etc. OR just that the for honor devs randomly picked this (pretty epic) music because it sounded cool and stuff and yeah, just my twist.

@TheMajorN I dont think we ever heard the Vikings reference an actual god in the Norsw pantheon, aside from the Odin's beard remark. Perhaps the Vikings developed their own sect of pagan Christianity? A Christ who values peace but rewards brave and selfless warriors who fight for moral reasons instead of selfish gain? And a Christian Valhalla, perhaps without the sex and death and but with tournaments and duels? Idk, it's going to be my working head-canon from now on. And it justifies me playing neckbeards whilst serving the Deus Vulting tin-cans.

People saying the devs didn't care about the lore or composer for the reason why there is difference in religion here and in the story. I want to say it's just people thinking too negatively. Vikings did worship Odin and the Norse Gods but eventually they started to become Christian, alot of conflicting ideals happened. Remember the game For Honor is about the wars fought over and over. We saw that in the original opening to the game and with the story. War constantly happening and bringing change. In the story the Vikings worshipped Norse Gods and the knights did invade if you remember correctly. So in Breach and multiplayer we have the chant be Christian rather then Norse. I see that as the multiplayer being wars and battles fought after the story, the change over time. So we see Vikings in the story worshipping one and in the multiplayer another because they do eventually change to Christian. You can still play in multiplayer Vikings believing in Norse since like I said it was very conflicting times when some believed in one while others believed differently. So you can be a Viking that believes in Norse or Christianity. Same thing really with all the factions, the story has one set but the multiplayer is set to show all the beliefs where you choose which one would you rather have your character follow if any at all. Playing a match and want to be a knight screaming Deus Vult then do that, want to be a Viking fighting for Odin? Then do it, want to be just a soldier of a war fighting not out of religion then do that. It doesn't really matter and I believe it's hate being created when there shouldn't be. They just made the setting in the multiplayer have the ability to follow their old beliefs or newer ones that did happen in time or none at all. Anyways thank you for posting the translations of these chant videos.

    The Helheim? Ubi....please explain.
In the campaign it says the knights worship "Gods of gold, etc, etc" but they say "Deus Vult" like a crusader. So do the knights worship the Greco-Roman Gods because the gladiator cleary uses Mars as a chant.
The Viking ram chant has "Krist mylja" in it. Now they sing a song about rebelling against the Gods yet still recognize that they exist? Does this not contradict everything about the faith entirely?
If there are conversions would we not see internal strife? Would we not have characters switching factions and a new way to earn victory in multiplayer?

I like to song for its intensity. And despite that, I also acknowledge the contradiction in the religion of the Viking faction.
It is quite sad that people are judging Ubisoft because of the choice of the chant, considering how obvious the Vikings follow Odin and His kin, but the chant is dedicated to Jesus.
There are many ways to view this. Personally, this is perhaps a small nod to the Christian Era of Vikings. This is the acknowledgement of not just one part of the Viking era which was Pagan or Christian...but rather, the entirety of the Viking era.
Now, let us look at the Knight faction. Why do they speak Latin? Why do some reference Roman Deities? We know Latin is sacred in the Catholic Church. And Latin is also the language of the Ancient Romans. As one can observe, it is a continuity. A continuity of the Latin community from Roman Pagan times to Catholic times, to the Middle Ages.
So now, this also applies to the Vikings. The Germanic people had one of the most intriguing pantheons, and yet their descendants made some of the best contributions to Christianity. It doesn’t matter, because all of these is what makes the Viking culture beautiful.
No matter what religion, ideology or tradition influences a society, it will always give a distinct identity to the society for many generations, consciously or not.
Oh yes, just a slight note, I know the lyrics can be quite offensive, and how the people interacted in the past, but based on personal experience, Odin and Jesus are CHILL with each other, it’s the people that made life difficult for each other.

So everyone is confused about what faction has what religion so I’m going to share my theory. So in our world the reason Christianity was so big was because the church had an iron grip in Europe. In For Honor the world basically ended which means that the church most likely doesn’t have that power anymore. This means that people could create new religions or follow old ones without interference with the church.
In our world the Viking’s conversation to Christianity was mostly peaceful and willing (with exceptions of course). Also some didn’t actually give up their old religion and just added Jesus to their pile of gods. So it could be similar in For Honor where the Vikings who follow Christ follow this as well.

  • @Luke_Danger

… okay, that's... actually rather hilarious, especially with the ram chant :D
But seriously what is going on with Ubisoft? I mean, the knights at least didn't actually go into their faith so it was mostly because it wasn't important to the faction ethos and the architecture told it well enough. But the Vikings are pretty explicitly Aesir worshipping, so... huh?
I mean, that's not to say there couldn't be Warborn clans that took it up (I imagine that missionaries bringing food would've had a LOT of opportunities after Sverngard's destruction), but it seems odd even if it is indeed taken from a historical saga.

Fellas, you don’t have to argue abt whether or not the vikings are christians or odin worshippers, historically they were both. That’s one of the reasons they never banded together. So, to clear things up, the campaign vikings may have worshipped Odin, but the breach vikings must be a different tribe who worships Jesus. For your character, it’s really up to you, so don’t blame ubi for messing anything up. Let’s appreciate the song for being as fantastic as it is, regardless of the lyrics!!
