A lot of people like to give guys like Edge, Steve Miller and all the guys among that style of music shit because what they played wasn’t that hard or intricate. This is so deep in the mix and I’ve heard this song, 100 times or more but I don’t remember hearing this bit. With so amazing is how melodic and rhythmic it is at the same time. There’s a syncopated thing going down with the drums and the bass and he’s just floating in between all of that. That’s not usually part of rock ‘n’ roll. That’s closer to Funk. The chiming in the outro of with or without you is one of the most beautiful parts I've ever heard especially when it starts to crescendo and fades into the end. It might be simplistic but powerful and effective. He also uses the chiming guitar on in the name of love. The Edge is heavily underrated.
In one of their DVD’s, probably Rattle & Hum, there is a part where The Edge explains that he purposely makes music that is simple because it makes it catchier and easier for the listener to remember. It completely changed the way I listened to U2 after hearing that explanation and I now really appreciate him putting effort into the listening aspect instead making it all about him.
I never would've guessed he was playing through his bridge pickup on the strat. He's an underrated guitarist in my book, very tasteful player and a wizard with effects.
This is craft. It’s the nous to know when you are and when you’re not needed in the song. It’s appreciating some silence from your instrument and letting the strings ring. It’s playing the chord well, not owning the song, be being part of it. It’s quality musicianship. It’s not super technical, it’s not mind bending speed, it’s not that ‘killer tone’ but it is right for the song. Musicians who can find that are truly valuable.
Edge is a prime example of less is more. If you take out all the fx & watch what he’s actually playing, it’s all pretty simple stuff. He just has the ability to layer it all & arrange it that most players never will.
Bono actually came up with this part. Many people encouraged Edge to go off at the end, but he refused and insisted on restraint. Total discipline on the recording. Live version is where he lets loose.

Many people do not understand that The Edge's focus on guitar playing is to create an ambience that fits the song's vibe and atmosphere rather well. A cool guitar part does not have to be weedly-weedly-wah noodling all the time - it is not going to fit U2. And it does not matter if he is not a shredder either. At the end of the day it is about making music.
This is just him strumming the backing track. The signature guitar line is the e-bow notes that are holding throughout. His parts are simple but elegant and very cleverly orchestrated. Edge has many incredibly fun to play riffs and songs and has influenced so many bands, probably more than any other guitarist ever.
