  • Sunrise with a beautiful canopy of clouds and light and waves hitting a rocky shoreline of Lake Superior.
In the opening scene, the ship Joseph L. Block heads toward Duluth in the dark as a small lit blob, and the video closes out with the same ship leaving the Duluth port in the afternoon. I hadn’t intended to film the ship leaving, or any ship, but I checked marinevesseltraffic.com when I was in Duluth and saw it approaching the canal, so I decided to film it to make Joe Block clips sandwich my sunrise.
When I got down to the canal and parked and out of the car with camera in hand, I looked at the canal and the ship was right there! So I filmed it from way back by the parking lot without a tripod. This ship is known for always having someone outside waving to the crowd (they are waving from the top deck this time). I saw on the Duluth Harbor Cam channel once that sailors even came out to wave at 2:30 am. No one was there to greet them that time. 😊 I filmed this ship departing in a winter storm in March, and sailors came out to wave. • the Joseph L Block hea...
I was going to add a link to a video with a better view of the ship leaving on this day, but none of the four RUclipsrs who regularly film the ships, nor the Duluth Harbor Cam channel, have published a video of this ship on this day-well, it was Mother’s Day.
Synchronistically, two weeks later, Joe Block was on the live web cam in the canal leaving Duluth while I was editing the clips of Joe Block in the canal leaving Duluth.

The opening frame is a photo of the Great Lakes ship (AKA a laker-as opposed to an ocean-going saltie), Joseph L. Block, heading south having passed my location at the closest point I’m guessing about ten minutes earlier at 4:15 am.

That afternoon, the Joe Block was leaving the Duluth port and was in the canal at 4:19 pm-the salute from the ship is synchronous sound, but the rest of the audio is from the morning shoot. I recorded the morning birds for a bit away from the sound of the water and paired it with these canal scenes.
