I just read her autobiography. She was supporting her family even at this young age. Never really had a childhood and yet she has a sunny outlook on life.
@her parents split up when she was quite young. Her mother's second husband was in vaudeville and he was the one who started her performing. Her mother was not very stable and her stepfather was an alcoholic. She said that even when she was twelve she often had to travel to jobs alone and was very lonely staying in a strange hotel by herself. If anyone did that with a child today they would get into big trouble. Yes indeed. After what they'd been through and the way HM King George VI gave them the right words at the right time shows that triumph is always possible, even during the darkest of days.

After studying in England for a year, I came home to America, and went to a festival for 4th of July. When they started "My Country Tis of Thee" for the audience to sing, I went into autopilot and started singing God Save the Queen. Everyone turned and looked at me, while my whole family burst out into laughter.
Long ago when I studied in England for graduate school I did the same! At the time I felt embarrassed, but in hind-sight it could have been a good opportunity to talk about how many English tunes were adopted and are still sung and played today in the United States.
That’s hilarious. I’ve done the same, singing with an award winning high school choir in America. We used to sing for retired military in nursing homes. It was one of the songs we would perform on request. It brought many a tear to the WWII elderly and their spouses.
Heh. I had to recite "the pledge of allegiance" every day in German class (and as a senior we had to say it in German because we weren't allowed to speak English in class), and then just after I graduated my (WWII era) grandmother took me to a public function where they said it, and on autopilot I started reciting it in German. (Ich schwere meine Loyalitaet zu der Fahne) The glare she gave me...
I remember Julie singing the Trish Trash Polka on the Educating Archie program when we were both 13 in 1949 to me she was so amazing and had the most amazing voice.
A remarkable vote of confidence from the organisers of the evening's Command Performance to entrust young Julie with leading the ensemble for the anthem. A superstar in the bud as someone said.
J.A. began her vocal life as a lyric/coloratura soprano with a range of 4 octaves. During the 50s, her voice deepend and she became a mezzo-soprano with a very strong upper register.
Allen Jones Julie Andrews was a soprano not a mezzo soprano. Just listen her West Side Story duet with Carol Burnett. Only in the eighties she started to sing with lower keys but she was always a soprano she started as a coloratura soprano and in the seventies and eighties her voice deepened and she became a second soprano but never a mezzo. The singer who sang in Mary Poppins and The Sound of music was a lyric soprano with high notes Allen Jones never a mezzo. .A mezzo was Judy Garland a mezzo was Marilyn Horne a mezzo was Mary Martin never Julie Andrews.
Ok.... who the heck can put a thumbs down on this?! Who cannot like a Julie Andrews in general? She is so talented, classy and beautiful!!! Shame on those trolls!!!!
Just writing this the day after our Queen has passed away. We must now start getting used to singing God Save The... KING. And here is the best clip I know. This is very moving. When the audience left the theatre that night of November 1st 1948, they will have had to pass rubble everywhere left by the Luftwaffe blitz and still far from being totally cleared. Interestingly there was still another 13 days before the birth of the now King Charles lll. Watch this clip to the very end. Julie Andrews will be 87 on 1st October 2022, and here she was exactly one month over 13... and a very young 13 at that. How great she is here. In her dazzling career, she never bettered this moment. The Royal Command Performance is over. The 52 year old King George Vl had less than four years to live... the stresses of the Second World War had exacerbated health problems already existing, and within months of this concert, a planned tour of Australia and New Zealand was postponed after an arterial blockage needed a lumbar sympathectomy just four months later in March 1948. And watch the audience at the very end as they look up at the Royal Box. One can sense their concerned affection. And Julie, from the moment when you excitedly run on to deliver the showpiece to the whole evening, to that top note you deliver at the very end, you made me proud to be British. Loved the way (Sir Thomas Beecham?) the conductor slowed down the opening lines for you to deliver as a solo, and then watch the brio of the conductor as he asks the massed singers to give the rest of the anthem their maximum volume. Startling to think that the odds are that Julie is the only single one of those assembled on stage and in the orchestra pit who is still alive as I write this. A great clip. Made even greater for me by seeing my boyhood hero Danny Kaye standing immediately behind Julie... and joining in the joke conga exit with Crazy Gang members (the King’s favourite comedians). - David 'Dai' Woosnam, Grimsby, UK - born 20/7/47
Thanks for all the information. I think the conductor is actually Henry Hall, of BBC Dance Orchestra fame. Certainly he is listed as the musical director for the performance.

Just Prior to becoming famous Julie Andrews accompanied her mother and step father on the theater circuit across the UK. In Manchester they stayed a digs run by my grandmothers sister. After they left she found a box of empty food cans under the bed, which must have been eaten cold, and one of Julies shoes. Mr great aunt loved theater people and if she had known how hard up they were she would have fed them for free. She wrote a letter to their next digs regarding the shoe and they wrote back asking her to keep it and they would collect it next year. Julie appeared as a star on the West End the next year and my great aunt kept the shoe as a memento. It had belonged to Julie Andrews.

The Sound of Music, imho, is the best movie ever filmed. Julie Andrews is truly incomparable among actresses. And Christopher Plummer was one handsome dude!!!!! I fell in love with him and never fell out of it in the 50 plus years since. Julie losing her voice was a loss for everyone.
Christopher Plummer is still a magnificent actor, but was a bit of a character in his youth. Max Ferguson's book "And Now, Here's Max" includes tales of some of Christopher's pranks when he was a young actor.
Most of the actors are still alive from this movie, so I've never understood why a modern follow up to the movie has never been made. It doesn't have to be a musical, just a family drama showing all of their lives.
Wow....unfrigginbelievable... WHAT an *AMAZING* piece of footage to have! At 62 Elizabeth was the only Monarch l had known my entire life. I hope Julie will be there May 6, 2023 to do a repeat performance for our wonderful new King. God Save The Queen, Long Live The King!👍🏻💖🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦

It's the national anthem, and not long after the war; I think that is why it was sung with such feeling. Not that they didn't love the king - he was a very popular monarch - too.
She really is royalty and so above today's standard hollywood level. Its clear she was beautiful super talented young girl 🌸 she's always had such warmth, charm and this elegant form of exuberance 🌠 Nowadays actors get oscars for only 5 or 6 lines of substance in a film and most aspects around them are cgi'd. But looking at the best of the best from screen's golden era (James Stewart, Julie Andrews) they worked very hard, speaking rich dialogue, doing lots of physical movement, lots of skill, and singing, dancing, riding horses, pitching baseball. They performed with body, soul & mind.
Julie Andrews is perfection at every age...such clarity in her voice and such poise. It's a bit unsettling that so many people out there are unaware of the ties between Great Britain and the USA. Imagine those early settlers, having decided that they wanted to form an independent country, and having realized that becoming independent could only happen through war, also realized that, like every independent country, they needed to create a national anthem. And how better than to use the pre-existing melody and just make up the words. I didn't mean to rant. I'm a retired teacher and I'm always appalled at the poor education our kids are receiving both at school and at home. Sigh.......
Yes, you are correct. Julie Andrews is A+1, so much better than any 'normal person' -- anyone can grant that. You are also correct that there was a pre-existing melody for "The Star Spangled Banner". But to say, "just make up the words" -- that is a bit harsh -- that not only ignores history, but invites us to repeat our mistakes, don't you think? Yes, the U.S. and GB have ties -- some are good, some not so good -- but we do have ties. I've not run into anyone here, young or old, who wishes to deny it; so sorry if you have.
btlfn14 Ouch. That sort of stings. The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written before it was put into a melody and made an anthem. True the melody was pre-existing but the words were not just "made up". That poem was written as as witness to the invasion of Fort McHenry (hence the original title). The United States of America was created for many reasons because there were many wrong things happening. Our bill of rights, yes rights, is our first ten amendments in our constitution and they were created to right previous injustices such as Article III not forcing soldiers to be quartered in our homes. I don't want to go into all of them but that is just one. You also seem to be implying that we had an unneeded war to become independent. It seems to me that if you are a retired teacher that you should know that England would not let us have an independent nation. Seriously. That's why we declared our independence and officiated it with the Declaration of Independence. We wanted to be equals. ("We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…") England had a monarchy which clearly did not have equality established. Of course you could go on to say that we had slavery at first and that not everyone was created equally and in the early twentieth century we had segregation, and those were faults, terrible faults and very bad things happened that should not have happened. We fixed those things. We are all now equal, and it seems that things are better in Great Britain as well. I'm actually appalled that you think so little of America, we have accomplished great things, you know. Sorry for this big paragraph and everything. I wanted to voice my opinion and say that I agreed with LadyoftheLake LK. They phrased it quite well. So let's celebrate our ties and differences and just be happy countries. I hope you see a different side of Americans from this comment and not just those who decide to say 'Murica and stuff like that.
We aren't talking about the Star Spangled Banner. The song "America" (My Country Tis of Thee) is the tune of God Save the Queen (or King) with new words made up by Americans.
btlfn14 But the actual US anthem is “the Star Spangled Banner,” also a British tune of the day. It was a drinking song and since one almost needs to be drunk to make the almost 2 octave range of the verse, that part makes sense. It would be nice to have an original American anthem, words and music authentically American, not some songs with tunes borrowed from the Brits. I remember as a kid, we had many “semi-official” anthems to choose from just as kids today have a variety of not at all official-but more honest- anthems of a pop nature.

@@rexdby2984 People loved royalties back then?
@@typingcat I'm still receiving my royaltie$. lol
@@typingcat You obviously meant to say "royals" and yes, people adored the royals back then, a lot more than today and that goes for all of the monarchies that existed and still exist. People still adore the royals, albeit less so overall and with less general support. They are dignified symbols of their countries like any other. Where the world thinks of Trump when they think of the US... The world thinks of The Queen who can do no wrong, when they think of the UK.
What a privilege for George to have the amazingly talented Julie Andrews singing for him!
I’ve never seen her this young. I love the enthusiasm in the crowd. Very patriotic people.
Probably because it was just a couple of years after WWII
I miss it
Yes indeed. After what they'd been through and the way HM King George VI gave them the right words at the right time shows that triumph is always possible, even during the darkest of days.
Julie Andrews is such a kind individual! She’s never been ugly about the fact she was the major bread winner for her step father , mother and siblings! Even as a child she had such Grace and talents ❤
She was put on earth to sing, such a tragedy she lost that gift.
It is indeed saddening that JA isn't able to sing like she used to, but even if she'd never had that surgery, it's possible that she still might not be able to sing like she once did; she turns 87 years of age on October 1st, 2022.
Everyone loses 'that gift' eventually. Vocal chords are muscles they age just like the rest of the body
She's adorable! I wish the sound quality was better. I love to see history alive in these films. What a treat, not to be dismissed lightly. Thank you uploaders!
Watching this makes me feel nostalgic and happy and sad at the same time even if I wasn’t alive then. What a beautiful memory captured in film. Thank God for filmmakers ❤
Julie Andrews Is A Lady Of Many Paths, Wonderfully Talented.Congratulations!
Love the way she was so enthusiasticly clapping, she was clearly enjoying herself!
I believe this was a royal command performance with Danny Kaye etc. and they seem to be applauding to the Royal Box and the King himself.
So well trained and talented. Pure vocals. Yes, it is Julie Andrews.
Beautiful, dignified, talented actress and wonderful voice, charming, without the dreaded ego and a real lady! Love her. At 13 she had a lovely voice and she was clapping with such glee after the National Anthem! Bravo Julie ❤️❤️👌🤗🤗😘😘 👏👏💐💐
I had never heard this before. Wow! Her child voice is so mature and beautiful. Well done…all her life!
This gives me goosebumps - in a good way. Julie Andrews' talent shows here,, even at her tender age. Thanks for uploading this, British Pathé
The way she scampers onto the stage at the beginning is so adorable. And that voice!!!
What an incredible honour for the King!
Only one word for Julie. WOW! What a human being too! Voice of an angel!
I love how enthusiastic she as a kid they way she ran in and the clapping at the end she was really enjoying herself
I love that very much, too✨!!!
Even at a young age Julie Andrews continues to amaze me with her talent! We are blessed to hear her sing .
thank you for this lovely piece of history. I feel so honored to have watched this.
Julie is a favorite of our family. She’s so talented. My boys remember her from Mary Poppins❤️
🤣🤣🤣
I never knew they stole the tune from England! So I'm watching this and thinking 🤔 that sounds like 1 of our songs lol.
I remember Julie singing the Trish Trash Polka on the Educating Archie program when we were both 13 in 1949 to me she was so amazing and had the most amazing voice.
Julie Andrews a remarkably gifted child and adult.
87 years young.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
A remarkable vote of confidence from the organisers of the evening's Command Performance to entrust young Julie with leading the ensemble for the anthem. A superstar in the bud as someone said.
J.A. began her vocal life as a lyric/coloratura soprano with a range of 4 octaves. During the 50s, her voice deepend and she became a mezzo-soprano with a very strong upper register.
Allen Jones
Julie Andrews was a soprano not a mezzo soprano.
I had no idea, that she started out so young, and so spectacularly...Amazing!!
We all started out young.
Even as a child Julie Andrews possessed a beautiful voice. Could listen to her all day. ❤
I sometimes do 🙂
Ok.... who the heck can put a thumbs down on this?! Who cannot like a Julie Andrews in general? She is so talented, classy and beautiful!!! Shame on those trolls!!!!
She always had such a pure voice! I believe she had perfect pitch as well.
I don't think I'll be getting used to it. I couldn't care less about him or his paramour.
Wonderful post, thanks!

Blown away by Julie Andrews! I wish I can see her onstage performing! Thank God for video posts! Her movies am watching on Anazon, Netflix ! My heart feels heavy thinking what joy she could have continued to give the world if it were not for those horrible doctors! God loves her ! To this day she's still using her VOICE for great causes!
Despite everything, she continues to shine & inspire! She is the most loved artist in the world!
Thank you for all your awesome uploads!
wow She's practically "pitch" perfect in every way :) wonderful
I love this woman. Listening to her biography “Home” now. She was talking about this performance and I decided to see if it was on RUclips. Here it is! Awesome and thank you for uploading it! (And hear her voice soar above the rest….at 13! Genius)
Incredible! Julie Andrews singing for King George VI, woooww. She always had a beautiful voice and was very cute as a child. This is a historical archive.
Such an amazing voice, presence & talent. We have been blessed to share her skills
I think there are not many people who saw the King and are still alive. 😳 Very cool, Julie!!! 😃👍
And now we are back to this anthem. Rest In Peace queen ❤
My next door neighbour is 89 so has now seen three monarchs. In the future, barring an unfortunate circumstance when the monarch dies early, we won't see the likes of Elizabeth again and many people will see three or maybe even 4 over their lifetime.
@@KingJackson11355 Yes. 😭
@@adelucas4824 Yes, that's true. 🥺
Holy... many of us only ever knew the Queen. Imagine Julie Andrews singing God save the King at 13 and for it to come full circle now.
Even after encountering such barriers of problems at such a young age,her smiling face is great.

What a beautiful story. It would be so cool if you could find a way to reunite that shoe with Julie today. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to see it.
.. love how 13 yr old Julie, runs delicately to the mic, receives her note & 'nightingale time'. What can be said? The Sound of Music is my all time favourite 'flic' ❤ 🇨🇦
p.s. also love her enthusiastic clapping at the end ..
The passion that everyone conveys singing the Anthem is so rousing. That's how it should sung.
Julie was really into it. Look at her clapping afterwards. First horizontal, then vertical then back again. (from 1:12)
I was just remembering her as she sang Doe a deer..... she lifted my spirit.
Speak for yourself, buggeroff! The movie became iconic decades ago and is still deemed by millions as a classic and so do I!!!
Christopher Plummer is still a magnificent actor, but was a bit of a character in his youth. Max Ferguson's book "And Now, Here's Max" includes tales of some of Christopher's pranks when he was a young actor.
@buggeroff Any more rubbish than all the violence on TV and video games? Come-on.
Definitely the most watched movie ever!
Most of the actors are still alive from this movie, so I've never understood why a modern follow up to the movie has never been made. It doesn't have to be a musical, just a family drama showing all of their lives.
I love their wholesome silliness at the end
This is amazing. Her singing for King George VI. Such beautiful voice she has.
RUclips's algorithm suggests this video once a year and I click everytime. No regrets. She's truly one of the greatest artists of all time.
She's practically perfect in every way 😍 Danny Kaye was one of my favorite actors.
I also spotted Ted Ray and Arthur Askey.
Yes it's in his biography, this time at the Palladium!
Even the way she claps her hands at the end is distinctly Julie Andrews. I just love her!
How wonderful, that this talented lady has given so many years of joy to so many, through the beauty of her voice! One of my happy childhood memories is watching The Sound of Music every year with my siblings and mother, and now I do the same with my own children.
Even at 13 you can tell it’s her. Amazing. Such a distinct and beautiful voice!
This is probably one of the most glorious versions EVER. Bravo for her!

What a beautiful, clear voice she had even at that young age!
Great footage! I didn't know she started so young. What an amazing voice!
They really loved the King. This is pure gold. Thanks for posting.
I wonder why.
It's the national anthem, and not long after the war; I think that is why it was sung with such feeling. Not that they didn't love the king - he was a very popular monarch - too.
Dame...Julie Andrews...and a rightful title so beloved.
Its a great thing to see such rare videos. Its good that they found her at that age
In my Opinion is Julie Andrews a Woman with High Class and Respect. I just love her.
She really is royalty and so above today's standard hollywood level. Its clear she was beautiful super talented young girl 🌸 she's always had such warmth, charm and this elegant form of exuberance 🌠
Nowadays actors get oscars for only 5 or 6 lines of substance in a film and most aspects around them are cgi'd.
@@ednorton47 I got the initial impression that btlfn14 was speaking about My Country Tis of Thee, but that has never been our national anthem
btlfn14 But the actual US anthem is “the Star Spangled Banner,” also a British tune of the day.
OMG Julie Andrews sing to the king. She really is a great singer. Look how she clap her hands for the king. Thank you for sharing this video.
