no hunny mattel still does it's just right now things are much more expensive than it was back then if they make a doll like they did back then now. The doll would be very expensive and nobody would be able to afford it.
I think Blaine is my fav male facemold for Barbie dolls. These dolls are simple but I love the little details in them. Loved seeing the magazine too, it reminded me of my childhood.
That is true, they really did well with Blaine. So simple yet so handsome. The whole line was perfection. I forgot all about that Magazine, I remember having one as a kid too XD
Blain is a great doll - I've always thought he was much more interesting and attractive than Ken. I have three of the Cali girls and I love their natural looking feet and their "sand" base stands.
Definitely, he was more attractive and interesting. Yeah, the later Cali Girl dolls had the big feet didn't they? I think I remember having one with feet like that. Such an interesting idea. I wonder who designed the Cali Girl line?
Ah amazing! I love Blaine, but he's a bit hard to come by! So lucky to have them all. I just ordered one, and I see there aren't many unboxing videos of him, so I'm glad I found this one. Very informative and helpful, thanks.
Thank you ❤️ Is he? I bought them all locally around the same time. Must have been one of those little blips 😂 Glad you liked this video. I was going to do all 3 separately but decided I couldn't wait to open them all 😊
I got mine off Facebook market place. At first I bought the listing because they where selling a Cali girl Christie for a good price. Blaine was also being sold with her in the listing but at first I didn’t care about him. Then when they got shipped to me I realized Blaine is actually a cool doll too.
I’m not sure the Blaine from GG is the same as the one from CG. If I remember, he’s from New York. I think Tori is the Australian in that line-Mattel likes Aussies! 😂 I’m sure that the break up was all for publicity and to spice up the image of Barbie during the hot competition Bratz was giving them. And it kinda worked tbh because I remember it! It was a big deal for Barbie to be single-Blaine was just a fling, as far as I’m concerned! Lol! It made her a little more hip I think. I love the tanned skin of these dolls and all the attention to detail. I really want the one in the set most as he kind of fits best with the girls I have so far. Thanks for reigniting my interest in CG, Bean. I’ll be sending you my bill 😅🙄💸 xx
Yeah, they reinvented him. Very sloppy of Mattel. But I guess they already had the TM etc. Yeah! I think it must have been the olympic hype at the time. And Australia is huge on surfing. Bratz, don't get me started. I was just thinking today about how at school, the cool groups would be playing Bratz. I asked to join in with Barbie and they reacted like she was an incompatible piece or something. I think Barbie did quite well. I think they panicked too much and it just made them look desperate though. Lol, sure, send it through! :P
Also I’ve never had any boy dolls before I got Blaine but besides the discoloration from the head and the body the quality of the doll is great. Most the time I don’t like the head sculpt of Ken faces but the Blaine from the boogie board set is well executed.
I have the Cali Blaine set you reviewed here and the Generation Girl Blaine set (the first release with the DJ turntable and records). I think the Generation Girl Blaine is gorgeous but thought it was odd when Mattel announced that Ken and Barbie had broken up. Obviously it was an attempt to boost sales for the line and was relieved when she dumped Blaine to get back with Ken (not sure what Mattel said happened in that storyline). I must admit I had a crush on that Generation Blaine doll back in the day (the only other two dolls that affected me that same way were the Dream Date Ken and Derek from the Barbie and the Rockers line - so embarrassed by that admission LOL). What bothers me about the Cali doll Blaine is that the coloring for the head and the body is different and doesn't match. His face looks almost gray compared to his very tan body but it's a nice sculpt.
Awesome! I like the Generation Girl Blaine too. Yes, the breakup was weird and kinda gross. It makes me feel icky just thinking about it. Why would they ruin Barbie's reputation with scandal like that? Some male dolls are really cute. I totally get that. It seems they put more effort into the male dolls, even today. Even the first Ken looked more realistic and attractive than Barbie IMO. Yes, I find the fading quite annoying. Many dolls have that problem from the 00s I have found, even some silkstones go green.
Love it! Great video Dean. Only 5 mins in and I'm already commenting. lol I was thinking of buying a Blaine doll a long while ago, but instead bought a Beach Fun Christie recently because I really like her face.
Thank you! Why not both? Christie is gorgeous. But so is Blaine :P All 3 of these guys were quite affordable actually. I have seen some for even cheaper since buying them :P
Have you EVER heard of an Aussie guy named BLAINE? LOL (Apologies to any Aussie guy who IS named Blaine out there, but you know what I mean... it isn't a very common name here.) Loving that big set with all his surfer gear! I guess 'Cali Girl' was the 21st century update of Malibu, hey? Love that they included a magazine with that set, too! I was in NO WAY a 'surfer dude' but I had those cargo shorts, raglan sleeve tops and over-shirts like that in the early noughties! And even a pair of board shorts exactly like that!! LOL I actually really like that stand on that second one... looks like he is standing on a sand dune or something! I guess the 'breakup' was all for publicity as I do remember all the stories, even in mainstream media. And didn't Mattel actually come out with a 'back together again' Ken when he reunited with Barbie?
Never EVER! LOL, I did go on a 20 minute rant about how Mattel got the Aussie thing ALL wrong. I had to cut it out as it was far too long though :P Yeah! I guess it was Malibu 2.0, I never thought of that. Lol! Didn't we all! Actually, I wore more tracksuits. Not by choice though, that was my dad. I hated it. Yes, I think that was in 2010 after her 50th. I think they needed something big to keep the sales up. But now it seems they aren't together anymore. Do you watch Barbie's vlogs?
@@DeanReen: No I don't watch Barbie's vlogs.... should I? I remember seeing one a while ago I think and thinking how it looked more like a digital version of Natasha! @@DeanReen I'd be interested to hear what they got wrong about Aussies! Also, I love in this video when you said "No time for pets, DUDE!" That made me laugh. :)
Wow I loved this!!! I wonder if Generation Girl Blaine and Cali Girl Blaine are the same sculpt? In my memory they are two totally different faces. Cali Girl Blaine is much more attractive 💖
Thank you. I can't. say for sure but they look slightly different. It seems Cali Guy Blaine had fuller cheeks and a thinner nose. It could just be the paint or manufacture though?
GG Blaine is copyrighted 1999 while Cali Girl Blaine is 2001, so technically they are different sculpts. They look similar enough that I would say 2001 Blaine is heavily inspired from 1999 Blaine, but they're different enough that I would say they're not exactly the same sculpt.
Thank you ❤️ It depends on what you value most. Money or play? Dolls in boxes do sell for more but if you can't enjoy him in the box is he of much value to you?

Hi, yes he does! They are all basically the same in construction, weight, and quality. Beach fun did have a bit of a toxic plastic smell so they probably used a different plastic. But he has held up well.
