    Absolute bass monster. I remember hearing him on Shovel Headed Kill Machine and his tone blew my mind! Funny thing is that I was sure that he is a pick player. Thanks Rodney for explaining this topic about his tone from the fingers!

      @RodneyMcG  4 года назад +6

      Yeah, his attack is really aggressive. We talk about it more in his interview. It was great to have a player of his level say the same thing have for a long time - you can be just as aggressive with fingerstyle, you just have to know how to approach it.

    Jack Gibson = Badass from Exodus to Nashville and beyond, for skill and tone. Jack himself and our host Rodney has referenced Greg Christian of Testament and his killer bass chops in Metal, I recommend Testament songs...Trial by Fire, Practice What You Preach and Souls of Black to get a good idea what Greg is about. As a music fan...I'm mainly into The Beatles and Oldschool Thrash Metal....but recent discoveries, or rediscoveries have covered the back catalogs of the band Death, Cannibal Corpse and Mastodon.

    When I first heard Deathamphetamine it was like a punch in the face. A great influence as that was the time I was learning to play and was trying to find my tone. Amazing and highly underrated bassist.

    Also check out Vile - The New age of chaos to hear Jack´s playing on a technical death metal album. Killer bass-tone and playing on that too.

    Rodney,
    Having "Big Blue" in the background is a very nice touch.
    It's all about details.

    Awesome episode. Love Exodus since I heard Bonded by blood in high school. I seen a pic on the Exodus Facebook page of the working titles for the songs on the new album to come. One in particular I’m looking forward to checking was called “this is just nuts” 😂
    Right there I thought “if it’s nuts for players of their prowess it’s gonna be good” 😄
    Can’t wait to check out the interview, love Jack’s tone and playing. Saw them on the Shovel Headed tour and they opened for the Haunted. And honestly, as good as the Haunted are Exodus absolutely destroyed them on stage. Literally walked out, kicked everyone’s faces in and left us standing there wondering what the hell just happened. It was beautiful 😊
    Crowd was already wrecked before the Haunted even began and Jack’s tone onstage was monolithic.
    Now, as for fave albums it’s a tie for me between Impact is imminent and The atrocity exhibition: exhibit B. The songs on both those albums are just timeless for me. And you can kind of hear a somewhat early blueprint of the modern Exodus sound that was to come on Impact and they started to refine by the time of Tempo.
    As for fave song, that’s a three way tie between Changing of the guard, Shovel headed kill machine and Downfall.
    Lastly Shovel headed holds a very special place for me given I heard that album before Tempo (strangely enough), and shortly saw them after I heard it on that tour and my god the title track and 44 magnum opus are just two of the most savage songs ever written. And I seriously got my arse handed to me in the pit for those two songs. Again, it was beautiful.
    Not to mention I’m also a huge fan of Paul Bostaph and his playing. He’s even said that trying to replicate Tom Hunting’s style is extremely difficult and he’s no slouch. So I tip my hat to not only his playing but the respect with which he treated Exodus’ music.
    I should stop typing and go watch the interview, I could go on for hours about Exodus music 😂

      Shovel is definitely a tough one to top. Exhibition A and B are both killers, though. A tough choice indeed!

    For a future MBM, could you do Damien Sisson from Death Angel? I've mentioned this in previous comments but I saw him live in Stockholm this year and he absolutely blew me away. He uses a mix between traditional fingerstyle and a kind of thump technique that he uses to get more of a picky sound. He's criminally underrated and in my opinion one of the best thrash bassists around.

    I've always wanted to know how to get this bass tone, I have a Yamaha BB414 and an ampeg SVT 4 pro, this type of sound is such as the intro of the song impious devious leper lord from Mayhem, any tips on the eq band or the gain?

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  4 года назад

      That's a great gear combo you have. I couldn't really offer advice on how to get where you want to get with you sound without hearing where you are starting. I do a tone diagnosis on my show Metal Bass Monday. There is info in how to get in on it in my last 2 episodes.

    • @chisco971
      @chisco971 4 года назад +1

      perfect, I'll check them! I've started to play with the eq band as the V shape and the frequency knob at 2 and added the bright button, it sounds kind of close but not enough
