“Love is like the sea. It’s a moving thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from the shore it meets, and it’s different with every shore.” Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Thanks for sharing this beautiful story ❤
I love that line, I'd forgotten it over the years so thanks for reminder. I have to reread the book cos she wrote several lines of wisdom that I no longer remember.
What a coincidence! A friend actually recommended this just the other day. While the title itself is really interesting, the fact that TED-Ed reviewed this novel means that I'm in for a treat as I embark on a journey that draws inspiration from the author's own personal experiences.
I loved this book as a teenager and now entering my mid 30s it resonates deeper. The free spirit of Janie, her love & loss….Truly a book to revisit over time as you continue on the journey of life. Thank you Ted for this, I’ll be picking this book up once again.
Read this one for high school homework. At the time I found it a little difficult to follow, all the dialogue is written in an extra phonetic way that’s meant to convey the accents and dialects of those speaking. But looking at it as a whole it was definitely one of the more interesting and thought provoking books I had to read
I remember reading this book in high school and though I don't remember all of the prose. I do remember feeling like I understood Janie's feelings about love and societal expectations. It was odd, somehow understanding how a character felt through a phrase like, "she turned to look inside herself and found that something had broken on the shelf inside her"
Tanya! As a total Zora-head, this makes me so happy. I loved teaching Their Eyes to high schoolers and ZNH's life is a huge area of interest for me. Congrats!
The only book I actually read and enjoyed in my junior year of high school for summer reading! Gonna have to dig through my closet and look for this book to reread it again.
We learned about Zora Neale Hurston and read “Their Eyes Were Watching God” when I was in high school. I loved the book so much, and I still think about it a lot even now. Her and her book really made a big impact on me
Depends on the kind of love. Self love definitely starts with independence. to love another person, you need to attach yourself to someone and seek validation from them, erasing the need for independence but instead, codependence.
So could we agree to disagree that all is interdependence and we always coexist? But idk but I really do appreciate your response cuz I actually agree with it too.
Books such as these are truly special. Books written based on real life experiences are almost always felt, and it enriches an already beautiful experience
We read it in my AP lit class as we are from Clewiston, near where the second half of the story takes place and right next to Lake Okeechobee and the sugar cane.
I read this many years ago in high school, n it recently popped up in my head, which, RUclips, get out of my mind! I had no idea this was mostly based on real life. Much of what I rmbr from the story tho was the emotions, a general grief and resignation to everything.
I was reading this novel about a week ago but stopped. I find their conversations difficult to read. However, this video is telling me to give this book another chance. Thank you TED for allowing us to widen our horizons thru these animated vids.
Read this last year in my English class. Enjoyed reading it, but alot of my classmates didn't like it and didn't care to understand it, even questioning our teacher for assigning it. Now Ted-ED makes a video on it, how cool 😁
The book is amazing, but as an ESL speaker I found it nearly impossible to read because the character's speech is written in the dialect they speak, it wasn't until I listened to an audiobook version of it that I was able to truly understand and enjoy the book for what it was: a masterpiece detailing the struggle against oppression and the innate human desire to be loved and accepted.
And I only watched the movie…But yes you expressed the whole theme of the movie! I must read the book thanks so much for this and what audiobook did you use?
The title got me thinking of what I want my love life to be like. We can work together but also by ourself, we don’t need to know where the other is all the time and we are but on trust as well as love

This happened one other time when I was deciding on reading lord of the flies then boom, your video Why Should You Read Lord of the Flies?
This book was amazing when I read it. It’s a hard read at first but it’s so poetic and beautiful with the usage of the dialect and characters. I absolutely loved this book when I read it in high school
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was many years ago so thank you for this video cos I had forgotten much of it, it's time for a reread and I highly recommend it. :)
Hi, TED-Ed. I wish you will take notice of literature from more underrepresented corners of the world. I could only hope for you to make a review the historical and literary significance of works and novels of José Rizal that stoked the flames of Philippine revolution and became inspiration for the following generations of literary and nationalistic movements.
Is "Can love and independence coexist?" the title of the novel? I am slightly confused about the meaning of the title of this video, if someone could clarify it for me i would greatly appreatiate that
Janie's story is filled with the tension of loving Teacake, but feeling the need to be her own person. She finds it conflicting to love a man while at the same time wanting her own life, separate from their life together. The title of the novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God. "Half gods are satisfied with wine and flowers. Real gods require blood." It's a powerful book, unforgettable and poetically written.
The title of the novel is "Their Eyes Were Watching God". I agree that the video is rather confusing and it's a bit of a shame to use a slight clickbait, but then again I possibly would not watch it otherwise 🤷♂️ Edit: from wikipedia: Their Eyes Were Watching God is a 1937 novel by American writer Zora Neale Hurston. It is considered a classic of the Harlem Renaissance, and Hurston's best known work.
I named my cat Zora because I was so impressed by Zora's life! 🥰 Thank you for this video so I can share with anyone who doesn't understand my kitty's name. Zora Neal Hurston was such a legend!
The video, the author and the explanation of her book had nothing to do with the question the video title posed. Click bait. This is the first time I think Ted Ed has done this to me :(
I have been watching some videos and I was thinking about investing in bitcoin or forex , but still don't know where to start from, any recommendation?

The title choice is strange, since it's a question but the video neither provides answers nor enough input material to serach for an own informed answer. The video itself is good.
Great video, but I’m calling click bait. This was a novel and racial tension analysis, which is important, but it wasn’t what the title suggested. It’s like ordering jubejubes and getting Hershey’s kisses. Good, but not what was expected.
