- The Minecraft advancements menu has been in the game since update 1.12 and every single update since has added new advancements to bring us to a total of 110 in the game today as of 1.21. However, Minecraft’s advancements is actually the second take on this sort of challenge concept as there used to be an Achievements menu instead. This consisted of 34 challenges, however most of these were actually removed when the game updated to 1.12. So today I thought it would be fun to go over the 21 cut achievements, talk about why they were removed, and if I think they should return!

It's such a shame that the ''Getting wood'' achievement is now removed. It's SUCH an iconic one.

The fact "Cow Tipper" could be achieved by killing Horses was always funny to me at the time.
That’s because the achievement only wanted you to get leather, not kill a cow for leather.
You could also get leather from fishing.
Glad it's not in the game anymore...
all of these achievements are actually on bedrock edition (although on a rail is changed to only require riding for 500 blocks instead of 1000). I think it'd be interesting to see you review the bedrock exclusive achievements

I think if "when pigs fly" comes back, it should come with 2 extra ones. A secret one called "Pigs fly?" Which you would get by riding a pig with levitation, and also "when pigs glide" that you would get by going 20 blocks horizontally midair on a pig, probably with slow falling or somethin

That would be a really fun idea. It would require set up by getting to potion effects that are obtained by shulkers and phantoms. Plus, we would get when pigs fly back.

I feel like from all these, "Getting Wood" deserves to come back the most, not because it's the most challenging or out there Achievement, but because of how iconic it is to the franchise.
Anytime someone wants to reference Minecraft, they either use Steve or reference this one, so it's a bit like Minecraft's version of "The Cake is a lie."

I think "On A Rail" is just to get the statistics to 1km travelled in a minecart. So 4 powered rails and 4 normal ones to make a rounded square should work. At least that was the strat in Captive Minecraft. Not sure if it also worked in vanilla, but I assume so
I miss captive Minecraft soooooo much it was one of THE most creative survival maps I’ve ever played.
I think Captive Minecraft changed it to be doable in that setting

The Ender Dragon fight isn't hard, you probably don't even need a Good Luck, but its appreciated
I see comments like this about how easy the Ender Dragon fight is a lot, and while they're not wrong, I feel as though they undersell how daunting it can be for a younger or newer player to achieve. If I was to go to fight the dragon now, there's a pretty good chance I can beat it first try because I know what I'm doing. However, I'm pretty sure back when I started 10+ years ago killing the dragon gave me problems. For most first-time players, "Good Luck" is a fitting description.

I only beat her once so far, and not without wasting so much time trying to shoot down the towers.
I mean, I beat the Ender Dragon (in survival) for the first time last year. I've been playing Minecraft for over 10 years, it can definitely be a daunting task for players.

Edit: Everyone who's replying that you like longer content is likely not aware that Odyssey Central is trying to edit his 200K special. He needs to make shorter videos so he can spend more time on that video. However, he initially had trouble with making videos that were under 20 minutes, which is something that Odyssey has brought up.

Hot Take: Diamonds to you! should return but now with a new description like "Throw diamonds at someone." and maybe a larger number of mobs you can throw diamonds at to obtain the achievement in single player worlds.
The most annoying thing about achievements for me was that Minecraft forced you to get them in a certain order, so whenever I started a new world and got wood before opening my inventory, the progression was just very strange, as I'd miss certain achievements and they'd pop up WAY after I had done the requirement. To me, advancements are a definite improvement
Technically we also lost the old "serious dedication" achievement, requiring to break a diamond hoe
Also all of these achievements are still in bedrock edition
Odyssey suggestions for Minecraft rankings
- rank every X, Y, and Z coordinate + every possible combination
- rank every pixel on every block + their hex codes
- every subscribers pfp built in Minecraft
- all people hidden in his basement by skill at Minecraft
- every 2d and 3d Mario level built in Minecraft by how well Steve is at them
- every hex code Minecraft uses on their textures
- all of his thumbnails in Minecraft

The really funny thing about all these achievements is that almost all of them are still in the game today in the Bedrock edition of Minecraft, outside of The End, which like in Java was split into two achievements for entering the End and killing the Ender Dragon, and while On a Rail is still in the game, it only requires you to travel 500 blocks on a rail instead of 1000

I can't help but notice many of these (mainly Cow Tipper and When Pigs Fly) involve killing animals... Maybe that's why they removed them. Mojang doesn't seem to like it when players kill animals these days.

A thing to add about the achievements was that they weren’t world linked like advancements, but were player linked which means once you got them they weren’t achievable again unless you reset/updated Java or something like that (I believe using a different computer to play would do this as well). It’s nice they made them tied to worlds instead since they have always been a mild tutorial guiding you through the entire game. Also I always enjoyed the on a rail achievement since it was a good indicator of how far you’ve gotten in a world that you’d both need, and have the recourses to do build such a long rail.
Additional Info: He is talking about Achievement on JAVA, most, if not all, of the achievements shown in the video are still in Bedrock Edition

"When pigs fly", was literally telling you to jump off a cliff. You wouldn't want to have this in a game this popular to then have to fight the allegations.
idk why but i remember there being an achievment called "Iron Man" which required you to craft a full set of iron armor
It's worth noting that a lot of the early game achievements were replaced not with equivalent advancements, but on-screen prompts ("Press 'E' to open your inventory") or the recipe book telling you what you can craft. I think that's a more natural way to handle a lot of these achievements since it acts more as a proper tutorial and is more flexible in design.

At this point that's just impossible. He needs to space these specials out more so he doesn't bite more than he can chew.
I think the “when pigs fly” achievement got removed due to the direction of the game heading towards not rewarding players for killing mobs for loot and also wanting to show younger enemies layers that they shouldn’t kill mobs in Minecraft that could damage them irl or something dumb like that.
So they teach children that animals should be killed without any meaning?

Eggs, wool, and milk all exist, all of which you don’t need to kill the animals for. Plus, horses’ main use is also through keeping them alive, and you don’t get honey from killing bees in real life.
No excuse why goats drop nothing, though.

Some of the achievements aren’t “Cut” Cut from the game as a whole. I remember playing the latest version of Minecraft at the time on my switch (being 1.19 with 1.20 experimental features still being a thing) and I remember that these achievements were still in the achievements menu for bedrock versions and when I was playing in my worlds, I remember that I dealt 9 hearts of damage to the iron golem that spawned near my villagers and loading up a seed with a notch apple at a close structure to get the diamond skin pallet. But yet again there was no advancements about cooking a salmon, or putting bookshelves around an enchantment table. Not to sound like a nerdy commenter, but some of these “cut” advancements are still in the game.

10:15 in the legacy console editions, there are also a lot of these achievements and the minecart one has to be changed to 500 blocks for it to be possible since those versions weren’t infinitely generating

Dawg that 500 blocks in one direction always stumped my ass! Back on my old Xbox 360 save I beaten the wither 90 times in total yet never fucking drove a minecart 500 blocks in one direction

In case you're interested, there are 2 ways to get on a rail that take significantly less time than placing 1000 minecart rails
The first one is to go on the nether roof, place 3 minecarts slanting down a few rails so that they'll roll into each other and continue indefinitely, which still requires you to wait while you travel 1000 blocks but doesn't require you to place more than a few rails.
The second is significantly faster, but only works on 1.9+. Find an end gateway, place rails going into it, enter it and then place rails going into it the other way. Now travel through the gateway in a minecart. Because gateways take you over 1000 blocks, if you go through it in a minecart on rails the game considers this 1000 blocks travelled.
Because there is a way to do it quickly, I wouldn't mind this being reintroduced. However, I get people not wanting to use methods that clearly go against what an advancement was intended to do, so I can see the argument either way
I remember back in the day like 2012 I watched some guy trying to get the "On a rail" and "When pigs fly" achievements and struggled quite a lot with both.
iirc, he was especially frustrated with how rare saddles were and how they were lost upon the pig's death making it very hard to do it properly, there was also no carrot on a stick in that version.
On a Rail was easy but just ABSURDLY time-consuming.
I think when Notch added these in he just thought of what might sound challenging without realising _how_ challenging it was.
One thing to keep in mind, before advancement, there is no crafting book, meaning you have to discover the recipe (or look them up). So having individual achievement for make tools/weapon make sense.
You should absolutely play portal, super fun puzzle games with cool lore and story. If you’re fav parts of new Zelda are shrines you’d like portal, the test chambers are basically shrine puzzles. Shocking you haven’t played it yet.
a lot of the achievements that were removed served as tutoials. Some of them should come back because there's currently noting in the game that explains these functions.
Take the cooked fish one.
That tells the player that they can fish (remember, fish didn't exist as mobs so the water used to look empty) and also that food can be cooked.
It might seem obvious, but there's actually nothing in the game that tells the cook stuff in a furnace. It's a furnace used for smelting, not an oven used for cooking (except it is)
Likewise, bread used to be a pretty important main food source. the achievement was to let new players know that bread actually exists and that they can make it.
of course, having new recipes pop up when you pick things up fills that niche to some degree

As someone who recently tried to start playing Minecraft blind, I would have LOVED those "simple" achievements as a guide for how to get started
Fun fact: 'Diamonds to you!' is not the only multiplayer exclusive achievement. There's an achievement on Bedrock Edition called 'Time for Stew' which requires you to give someone Suspicious Stew.
Most of these achievements came from a simpler time in minecraft where most of the unique things the game could track were a lot easier.
I feel like the cow tipper achievement should’ve gotten revamped into one for making leather armor, since everyone always skips straight to iron cause it’s simpler
Diamonds to you! is still in Bedrock Edition, but as with a lot of Bedrock achievements, it's a toss up whether you'll actually get them for doing the task.
Whats super weird is some of these achievements are used on the bedrock editions of ps4 and Xbox One since they carry over there original legacy console trophys/achievements
The rail one was most likely an important thing to set up prior to Beta 1.8, when sprinting was introduced. When it was created, it would fall under the "Important to Progression" category.

The parrots and the bats achievement was only called that because there were no birds or bees at the time, so it should be changed to the parrots and the bees as we have them now
That's what I was saying! I remember being so intimidated when I saw "The beginning?" Which is so much better than Withering Heights. "The End?" and "The Beginning?" have the same vibe as "Those were the days" in the sort of cryptic style that I really like. Also I always thought "Whatever Floats your Goat" was earned by riding it off a cliff but I guess that was from what I remembered of "When Pigs fly"

Fun Fact: All Achievements and Advancements are in the Bedrock Edition, and there are still called Achievements. They also have a pixelated drawing (similar to the ones shown At Minecon Mob votes) to represent every signal Advancement in the game.
How about a video comparing the achievements in both Bedrock and Java?
I think it would be fun to see someone in the MODERN game complete all the cut achievements for fun, it could be a silly side quest for a minecraft world, you just group up all those cut achievements and try to get them as you play
Also if Game Theory's..well, *theory* on Minecraft's lore is accurate to what the devs intended it would be interesting to see "The Beginning?" or "The Beginning." return because it would be huge lore relevance and would actually align with the story since the birth and death of the wither can both be seen as "how the end of the ancient civilization began"

I loved old achievements because as a kid they helped me to advance without lookin in internet, mostly because I was a kid who didn't know how to change Minecraft from english to spanish and had to ask my mom to translate, but some were actually intuitive enough for me to get them without translation. I mean, I was living a lie thinking leather armor was made out of wood
i don't think we really need the getting wood achievement nowadays because the game now has a mini-tutorial asking you to get wood
I get that "when pigs fly" was removed for being pointless violence against a real animal but hear me out, they could just rework it so "make a pig fall 30 blocks and survive" keeping both sides happy, there is already an achievement that asks the player to jump the literal biggest fall and survive
The achievement name “on a rail” is also a reference to a valve game. There is an infamous level in the original half-life game that shares the name and is critiqued because you spend to much time on the minecart
As of 1.21, there is 122 advancements in the game. 1.20 had 110 advancements and 1.20.5 had 114.
yeah a lot of advancements are being added with every update now there are 3 advancements dedicated to frogs and 2 dedicated to allays
When Pigs Fly needs to return
Half of those starting achievements were good for playthroughs that they do the border that expands with achievements, but I understand why they got rid of it
As a regular Smite user, let me tell you, you can instantly kill any skeleton or zombie variant in one hit with a Smite V diamond sword so overkill is an easy achievement in that sense without a strength potion.
The Advancement system has a few special advancements marked as Challenges. I feel like some of these, like The Lie and When Pigs Fly, could return in that form.

I used to try to get the "when pigs fly" achievement on every world I made when I was a kid, I didn't even know they removed it :( I also forgot about a good amount of these since it's been so long, nice trip down memory lane
My personal opinion: Microsoft gave Minecraft "senior-itis".
If Minecraft as it is today was released for the first time today, there would be no feasible way to beat the game for a very long time. In previous console versions, there were tutorial worlds which taught you things like certain crafting recipes, how to get to the nether, and navigate to the end portal. Nowadays, next to nothing in-game hints towards how to do any of those things. Getting rid of the achievements was a consequence of this. The achievements at least gave you an idea of how to beat the game, even if the idea was slightly vague. With advancements, it just marks small, seemingly random (outside looking in perspective) objectives in the game that have no correlation to actually reaching the end of the game, let alone the nether.
To finish it off with a final point:
If Minecraft were released today, and there were no RUclipsrs, no wiki, and no friends to contact about it, how would you know how to get to the nether? Sure, you could find an easy way to get to the end in creative mode. But the nether? I think the only reason new players know about how to get there is because of the popularization of the game, and they've probably seen it in a RUclips video or a meme.
i actually really like "on a rail", in part because of its original context: the achievement was added to the game back before the game had an "end", and because of that most people would pretty often build a railway system for the gimmick and fun of connecting builds together. think of it like a proto-boatway in the nether. in this sense, i think it would be nice if it still existed, even if i understand that the "use" of railways has subsided thanks to new transportation methods being added into the game, i dunno it just to me fits the Base Idea of minecraft which rests within my mindscape.
I think a bit of a longer video looking through all the scrapped Minecraft mobs (including dungeons, earth and legends) would be pretty neat
How much of it would he need to waste going over the mob votes?
I'd honestly really like overkill to come back to serve as a precursor of sorts to over-overkill, similarly to how the three back-to-back-to-back spyglass advancements work. It could either be an actual precursor advancement, or a "quasi-precursor" of sorts, where it comes before over-overkill but isn't required to get it.
I definitely loved the rail achievement as a kid, would just create a superflat world, place it all down and ride looking at the slimes and the villages passing by
On A Rail was honestly my favorite pre-1.12 achievements. I spent hours caving for gold when I was a kid to get it on a server.
I miss the "The lie" achievement, both a cool reference and also a good reason to actually craft cake, which is kinda pointless

When I was a kid playing Minecraft survival for the first time(for reference I first played when they added desert temples) I actually got stuck because the achievements menu said to collect stone to make a stone pickaxe, and when I kept mining all I'd get was cobblestone and didn't know about smelting it to make stone, so I got stuck for awhile. I actually managed to get far into the game using the desert temples to get diamonds and made a diamond pickaxe and used that with blacksmith chests to carry me pretty far into the game. Either way, I was stupid as a kid
You could just wait until 250K and make it a 250K special... or it might even happen before it releases

Technically god apples are renewable through ominous trial vaults but you have to go to different chambers each time, although in a world where the border is 30 million by 30 million it basically counts as renewable.
