Steven Whiting maybe it’s because they typecast him as the memorable Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.
He was nominated, but he was up against Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, so even if you think Viggo should have won it's an understandable decision from the Academy.
In any other year, he could have won, but that year was Daniel Day Lewis's.
But he was up again Daniel Day Lewis. Anybody who is up against him loses their Oscar
Both in A history of violence and this Viggo nailed it, he definitely should have won the Oscar. Dude actually went to a Russian prison to prep for the role

He was really unlucky to have Daniel Day-Lewis' historical performance in There Will Be Blood against him. He would have definitely won if it was for another year.
Viggo really did a Russian accent well. I'm impressed. He's just awesome.
This trailer really doesn't do this film any justice. I watch this film last night and it blew me away. Without giving a lot away. It's a film where there are your typical goodies and baddies. A lot of dodgy deals and deception. What I loved most about it though is, it doesn't over focus on the central plot, a lot of the film is about character building with many twists involved and unexpected developments. Brilliantly directed by one of my favourite directors. Would recommend very highly.

Yeah, I watched it last night too... 7 years later. Though there are parts that I need to close my eyes for, I just couldn't bear to watch it. It's a great movie.

I have seen this move already 8 times and still can't get enough of it! Viggo Mortensen in one of his best rolls (besides LOTR)

@@AndyP998 Exactly, being to Russia, met some gang members, learning the language. Once I saw him in Eastern Promises I knew that he was more than an excellent actor. Mortensen is a polyglott, speaking something like 7 languages, very intelligent , down to earth and eloquent person.

GREAT movie!!!!!! Once again Viggo Mortenson shines as a Russian driver for a powerful Russian family matriarch... Sometimes a bit complicated when it comes to Russian politics and family business.. I said it many times. Viggo in my opinion is very much on the level of such actors as , Al Pacino , Robert De Niro , Robert Duvall, etc. Just love every movie he was casted in. His Russian accent is spot on. Not to difficult for a man that speaks seven languages.
Agree he should definitely be considered up there with the greats deniro, Pacino etc

Superb , brutal at times , hope a sequel eventually but maybe leave it as a stand alone masterpiece.

All I can remember from this very serious film, is going way too high and me and my friends laughing way too loud during the naked fighting scene
I know this is crazy. Can someone make a novel out of this movie? The story is superb yes. But, I'm the kind of person who can't really touch the depth of hearts through just visuals. This story is intimidatingly mysterious and full of flavour that it isn't complete just hanging like this!!!
Please, someone, write a novel from this. And along with its sequel that couldn't make it into real movie...

Excellent Movie very sad for the Russian women who have to endure being drugged and thrown into prostitution against there will! Great insight to a world unknown to most of us in the west this is a must see!

I have a weird Viggo Mortenson related story... in October 2007, I went to the premiere of Gone Baby Gone (directed by Ben Affleck). Matt Damon showed up which was cool, seeing these friends from the same city, doing a world premiere in Boston... anyways I just checked it out, then asked the ticket guy for a poster. He gave me one and said "Hey, Stephen King is watching Eastern Promises. It gets out in 15 minutes you might see him."... I waited, and sure enough Stephen King comes down the escalator and I shouted "Mr. King!!!" and he smiled and waved!
3 Months Later... I meet Viggo Mortenson in Boston when he did a live performance of The People Speak. Josh Brolin was also there (I had just seen No Country For Old Men a few weeks earlier). Others were there too including Marisa Tomei who is I saw Eastern Promises before Stephen King unless that was his second time seeing it.
Long story, short... Stephen King saw Eastern Promises at a theater in Boston, and I met the actor of this amazing film a few months later.
I also met David Cronenberg in 2014 in Provincetown. He was accepting the Filmmaker on the Edge Award.

It meant "поставить на перо" - set someone up on a chiv. But he would not mention it to a "freier". In fact all the vory customs in this film are kinda bulshit. To me (a russian) it looks just stupid and weird.
