Can we FINALLY agree that the staff, for the St. Louis Cardinals, is NOT good? Can the Oli defenders finally admit that this is not working?
Over the last two and a half months I've cooled on my complaints with Oli, Mo, Blake, etc. (except for DeWitt: I'm probably going to be pissed at him for a long time). Again, I've been trying to be a little more optimistic about our staff, and try to see if maybe we could continue the momentum we had been building, since Mother's day. I've even been starting to think that I was wrong about Oli and maybe Mo knew what he was doing after all. I really, really, REALLY have been trying to be open minded about our staff. But after this series, I'm done giving them more chances. Last night was an EMBARASMENT.
Of course, the staff doesn't play the games; the players have to do that. But if they're never given consistency in a lineup, how are they supposed to catch fire? Oli went from a somewhat consistent lineup to playing matchups like his life depends on it. I'm tired of seeing scenarios where Winn is sitting because Crawford has a lifetime .281 average against this pitcher, or we leave Burleson off the starting lineup because a lefty is starting for the opposition. This is professional baseball, and these are (supposedly) MLB athletes! It is time to LET THE GUYS SUCCEED, OR FAIL, WITH CONSISTENCY! If we keep Gorman and Burly out of starting lineup, because of a lefty starter, how the f**k are they supposed to improve against lefties?! Are we supposed to just platoon/split EVERY lineup, for the next half decade?! If these guys are going to improve, or at least show that they won't improve, we won't know if we don't PLAY THEM everyday! Stop benching the guys that are supposed to showcase their talent, and let them DO THAT!
Quite frankly, I'm done with this team. Yeah, yeah, yeah, "something, something, something, the season isn't over yet," I don't care. I'm still going to watch the games, but I am strictly going to watch and see if there is any hope for the next few years. So far, I'm not seeing a whole lot. Winn looks to be the real deal, Siani has been undervalued as a player (so of course he needs to get injured), Helsley has been great, and Contreras continues to drag this team with him, no matter how much they whine and protests. But what else is there?
Burleson: Has been GREAT! But, because he doesn't profile well against lefties, we don't start him everyday anymore. F**king stupid decision. Let him play and see if he can get better!!!!
Gorman: I am convinced he's a bust, and that we should have traded him at the end of the 22 season.
Nootbaar: The second coming of O'Neil, and quite possibly the most overrated player I've seen in a long time. If he's REALLY that good, than why don't we utilize him to get an actually good stating pitcher? Like Gorman, I think we should have traded him in 22 (and I said so back then, only for people to come after me and say that I'm insane). Who's looking insane now?...
Gray: He's fantastic... but a fantastic number two starter. To be fair, there are maybe ten pitchers that I would classify as legitimate number one starters in MLB these days, but Gray is not one of them. And that's fine! But we need to get him some back up, because having one pitcher at his level won't cut it.
Gibson: Has thoroughly exceeded my expectations, I admit that. But he's also older, and we only have him for one more year. And what happens if he regresses? If he's our number 2 pitcher, we're screwed.
Goldschmidt: It's been PAINFUL to watch him hit this year...
Arenado: I don't blame him for being pissed off with this FO, but if this is how he's going to play for the next three or so years, than holy shit are we in trouble. Maybe some time-outs on the bench would put some fire back in him...
Walker: Should be playing in the corner infield, and can't seem to hit anymore. Another prospect that it looks like we've screwed up. Wonderful.
Herrera: We should seriously consider converting him to Firstbase. Arm strength is hard to train, and might never come through. I don't expect him to even come close to Yadi levels of greatness, but we can't have him and Pages throwing out 1 out of 43 attempted runners consistently. It's not a recipe for success.
Pages: Pretty much Herrera, although he does seem weirdly more clutch at hitting. Still, we need to see what he's capable of so keep playing him and let's see.
Baker: How many people even remember he's in our system? Also, how many of you know he's already 27? We never give him a fair amount of time to actually show what he's capable of, but given his track record, I'm inclined to believe he's a 4-A player.
Hence, Hjerpe, Graceffo, and all of our pitching prospects: We've seen Graceffo do well, as well as McGreevy... So, naturally, we leave them in AA and AAA. WHY!!!??? We actually did well in their starts!!! I'd feel better with them on the mound than I would with Matz, Lynn, or Mikolas. Speaking of...
Matz, Lynn, and Mikolas: Are there any fans of these guys out there? I mean serious, die-hard, "this is my guy," defenders of these guys? Apart from Jimmy "The Cat" Hayes, I haven's seen any for Lynn, and the other two I don't think I've seen any support! Lynn probably won't be picked up for next year, but we still have Matz and Mikolas for next year. Well, Mikolas we do. If Matz starts more than 10 games next year I'll be SHOCKED! Regardless, what does this mean our rotation is going to be? Gray, Gibson, Mikolas, Fedde, and Matz/[6 other guys who are clearly better, and deserver the spot, but won't get it because Mo and Oli are f**king stubborn and stupid about the lineup constructions?] Yeah... that doesn't inspire confidence in me.
If you read this far, much appreciated! I know I'm far from the only person who's ranting online at this point... I'm so damn sick of this FO, and it's insistence on "The Cardinal way."
    Mo NEEDS TO GO!
    Oli, NEEDS TO GO!
    Blake, NEEDS TO GO!
    Ward, NEEDS TO GO!
DeWitt, either needs to let the president of baseball operations have some money to work with, or sell the team to someone who actually wants to win a World Series again!

Add Bloom to your list to go, and take Marmol and his coaches off the list. The series in Cincy was clearly impacted by Mo's bad decision to call up Walker. That has nothing to do with Marmol and staff. Pham got benched one game, while Walher went 0-3 or 4 in the game. Would Pham have sat out without Mo telling Marmol to use Walker? I doubt it.
Also your old-fashioned notion about consistent lineups being a problem, note that ALL MLB TEAMS now use lineups that change almost daily. Many teams win a high percent of games using lineup changes based on matchups.
Much of what you wrote there I can agree with, to varying degrees. I too think Herrera should be working out at 1B. We need to find a place for him to be in the batting order. Catcher position doesn't look like his future, and Goldy might retire after one more season.

At this point everyone should be able to see an issue with the coaching staff. 3 seasons under Oli with no results. Teams slump and look horrible. Players leave and return to form. Pham and Fedde join the club and are now struggling. This is clearly not the Cardinal baseball I know and love.

You're totally ignoring Marmol won a Division title his first season as Manager (before Mozeliak began disrespecting players in contract negotiations and penny-pinching salaries). Your "with no results" comment is just plain falsehood.
Also, Fedde had one bad game, he is not struggling. He isn't an ace pitcher, so don't put your expectations so high you'll never be satisfied by him. Nor is Pham struggling, no one hits .700 for a whole season, so you have to expect a few oh-fer-whatevers to balance that hot streak.

Too many of you think you know things you don't. Blaming a field Manager for this is the lame excuse that all front offices use, so they can hold onto their own jobs a bit longer when their decisions have lead to poor results. The REAL issue with the Cardinals is obviously Mozeliak and Bloom. They put this roster together.
If any of you heard Carlson's interview after the trade and have the ability to read between the lines, he said it would be nice if positive responses were given more in StL. For those of you who can't translate, he was talking about salaries. Mo, his inability to evaluate talent and his handling of contracts is a big part of why StL is failing to perform.

@@LockedOnCardinalsMLB JD, all those names were top line guys with broad reputations. I've looked at the players' salaries down the list, and we are NOT competitive with other teams' lower order daily lineup and backup players.
It was before this season began that I last looked, but we had a lot of young talent being underpaid in comparison, because we had them locked in, they couldn't go to arbitration or leave in free agency.
StL needs to pay talent what they are worth, BEFORE they have to. Reward good results sooner. Amend contracts, don't wait.
The mindset that we have them locked in at a million per season when other teams are paying 2 million per season for the same level talent must go, under a new POBO.
Bloom penny-pinched in Boston. Look what happened during his time there, and how much and quickly they've rebounded after he was fired, and a new philosophy was put in charge. They sank down to be a last-place team under Bloom, now are already making a move to be in playoffs if they get their pitchers back from injury. For a while, it looked like they might challenge the Orioles and Yankees for 1st place in that Division, until injuries came up.
Our players saw that losing penny-pinching reputation (Bloom) hired to come to StL, maybe as Mo's replacement if he retires, and why should they be motivated?
The best thing StL could do right now is give Burleson a raise for his performance. I mean right now! It would light some fires in that clubhouse.

I don’t personally see “quitting” so much as “complete inability to play well.” I believe they want to do better - they just can’t. I don’t think this is as much a coaching problem as it is a lack of talent, something that can only be solved by getting *different players*! This will take years to solve, even *if* they actually get rid of Mo, which I don’t think will actually happen.

Carlson said after his trade that it would be nice to get more positive comments in StL. That was "code" for the player's dissatisfaction with the front office and salary negotiating.

JD, it does appear that they have mentally thrown in the towel. You have to look to who is running the show. Mo and Ollie and their "indecision" process.
Walker should not have been brought up. He was starting to put it together at Triple A and should have been left alone. To bring him up and then after one game sit him down shows that they don't know what they are doing. It also confused the position players who did not indecision.
Ollie and Mo need to go! Mr.Stingy is not going anywhere which makes me wonder if this thought process will ever change. A change in philosophy has to happen. Remember when the got rid of Mike Schildt after a 17 game win streak for "philosophical differences"? This "new" thought process began there and has brought the Cardinals to where they now are now. 🤮
The Chaim Bloom and Skip Shoemaker Era needs to begin, but will Mr. Stingy back off and give them a free hand to turn this disaster around. The mental depression has to stop. Players that have proven that they can't hit and can't pitch and are over the hill need to go. They have several pitchers and position players at Triple A that need to be brought up and allowed to play every day, not sit on the bench.
JD, I love your choices. That would be a killer rotation! At this point we can only dream.

Five of the last six seasons have been a continual decline in quality, morale, and general attempts to win. The run of 21 was fun, but that gets overshadowed by Schildt's firing (which was complete B.S.).

YOU APPLAUDED the trade for lower class Fedde. THAT SINGLE DAY was the final knife in the back. FIX THE OFFENSE: KEEP TOMMY no instead you trade his salary for FEDDE salary a terrible pitcher who was booted from MLB last year. The Cardinals should have KEPT TOMMY - and made a SERIOUS RUN at a TOP shelf pitcher and a BIG outfielder. They failed and clearly they didn't because THEY KNEW they had no chance so why give away prospects for a hope and prayer. KUDOS to MO its one of the smart moves he did make... but what he should have done is TRADED ANYONE and EVERYONE someone wanted. We'll regret that down the road.

      @andrewhoffman1087 2 месяца назад

@@scottcoleman9710 Yeah. If you look at our rotation objectively, we've got a number 2 starter, two number 3's, and a bunch of 5's/backups...
      1. Gray: A guy who is a solid pitcher, but honestly profiles more as a top-end number two starter. To me, a number one starter is someone like Galen, Strider, or Cole. Gray is clearly a step below them, most of the time, and will occasionally punch above his weight, but that's not really a problem. If we had two guys like him, it would be acceptable. The problem is that behind him we have...
      2. Gibson: The guys has surpassed all my expectations this year. I'm glad he's here. But his career would say that, especially at this point, he's at best a number three starter, and more likely a number four. It happens to everybody. He should have guys in front of him who are better, but he doesn't. That's not his fault.
      3. Fedde: Eh... He's capable of being a number 3 starter, but I think you're feeling better if he's your number 4.
      4. Mikolas: He's been up and down in quality, but now it's been primarily downs. If he's your number 5 starter, I don't think you'd be complaining too much. But, like all the guys ahead of him, he's being thrust into a higher tier of pitcher, since St. Louis is, apparently, incapable of developing quality starters.
5a. Lynn: If he had not pitched in St. Louis before this season, there is no way we would have resigned him. Also, to me, he's a number 6 starter. He should be taking the high-road and accepting stints in the bullpen, but apparently that's beneath him.
5b. Pallante: I could see him panning out as a number 3 starter, if he were given the time to do so. But, since we're on the books for too many aging, injury-prone, nostalgic signings, the odds of Pallante being given this chance is not good.
5c. Matz: If he would stay in the bullpen, I think people would just be mad about how much his contract is eating up on our year-to-year salary. He's good in the bullpen, but he's a roulette wheel of quality as a starter, and with how consistently he's injured, penciling him in as a starter is insanity.
5d. Libertore: For the love of God, just leave him in the bullpen! He's had success there, and if we can at least have a long relief guy that we can call on every few days, it's not a complete waste of talent.
5e. Thompson: Last I checked he's still in Memphis, and not doing all that well. I wonder if he's going to be the second coming of Dakota Hudson, where he gets DFA'd in a year or two.
