    What's cool about an overdrive that is an original design is the fact that there are only a finite amount of circuits that work well for sound. It's very difficult to come up with an OD pedal that is completely 100% original. Even the Tube Screamer started off as a clone of the OD-1.

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing
      @Paul_Lenard_Ewing 2 года назад +3

      No the tube Screamer has a totally different topography. It was indeed brought out to compete with that Boss pedal but Maxon found out Boss had patents good for another 3 years on it. What is true is that when Boss decided to replace the OD-1 with the SD-1 they cloned the the Tube Screamer but changed the clipping diodes so it made asymmetrical (tube like) distortion. The ts uses symmetrical distortion is in effect synth like. Maxon did that as it to was part of the Boss patent description on the OD-1.

    • @dannyllerenatv8635
      @dannyllerenatv8635 2 года назад

      @@Paul_Lenard_Ewing different topologies yes, however, it’s humble beginnings are traced back to the OD-1. Sometimes a simple little change in the value of 1 resistor will dramatically change the device into something new. Playing both an OD-1 and a Tube Screamer, they are definitely different sounding and feeling for sure.

    All I do, each & every single day, is watch gear demo videos, and JHS Show Episodes, all day, every day, without fail, no matter what.
    Every once in a while, JHS Josh will come up with a decent riff, and yay! Happiness for him exists.
    Tonight, just a mere moment or two ago, I experienced this, assumingely originally penned tune of yours....
    And, with all honesty laid upon the table, for one and all to bear witness to.... This is EASILY, THE SINGLE FINEST, MOST FANTASTIC ORIGINALLY CRAFTED TUNE BY ANY RUclipsR WITH WHOM I place any amount of hope, trust, instinct, or even a "WowFactor" into....
    Regardless of my grammatically incoherent nonsense & tomfoolery, I apologize.
    You are THE WINNER!!!!
    Keep up the great work.
    I am SUPER impressed!
    And, just wow, mang!
    I hope you're able to get it all finished up, and give it a proper release, because you deserve some SERIOUS RECOGNITION!!!!

    Currently I have a Tubescreamer with Keeley Mod, a Flyrig 5 V2 with Sansamp, and i just bought an MXR 10 Band EQ.
    Should I get rid of all those and just get the Kernom Ridge ?
    I’ve been searching for a tone like this pedal offers, and I haven’t yet tried the MXR 108S.
    What would you do ?
    I’m talking to you out there, all you pedal junkies and holy grail tone-seekers.
    Much appreciation for any help.

    • @eirikstor
      @eirikstor  2 года назад +1

      A general advice I give is not to change anything if you're happy with how it is now. If you can afford to experiment with buying the Ridge and keeping the other ones, go for it.

    • @adnap
      @adnap 2 года назад

      @@eirikstor Thank you for the reply.
      I spoke directly with Kernom and they said to keep the FlyRig 5 because of the Sansamp and the Kernom would cover the rest.
      I wouldn’t say I’m exactly happy with my tone, but what then again, what I’m doing isn’t conventional.
      I have a Taylor Koa T5 with a 5 way toggle and an LR Baggs Anthem pickup system, and I blend and alternate my tones. I’m using 9-46 Stainless steel strings, but might switch to something else, because the don’t ring out like I expected they would.
      I’m getting closer to being fully happy with the piezo tone with the help of a couple of LR Baggs Align pedals.
      But the electric tones for rhythm are a bit more tricky.
      I’m looking for more sparkle and clarity, yet still want the sound to be nice and thick for my live shows.
      Since the stacked humbucker it comes with is very low output, going into a PA directly requires some effort and TLC.

    Cool design and good demo. I never really heard anything that made me want to buy the pedal (that's on the pedal btw, not you). Sounded good, but doesn't do anything that hasn't already been done. Definitely agreed with what you said at the start. There's a finite number of good sounding drive circuits that can be produced. As an electrical engineer, this sounds more like a new way to market an existing technology rather than inventing an entirely new one. I'd honestly be surprised if any guitar pedal ever introduced a new technology that didn't exist elsewhere first.
    I admit that it sounds really good, which is what actually matters. Unfortunately, guitarists generally choose hype over good sound, which is why companies need to market like this in the first place.
    (Edited to correct typos. I wrote this before I had my coffee this morning)

    • @wheeleratthesolarhouse3953

      All technology springs from something which already exists. Listen to Josh from JHS try to explain the "Adjacent Possible" theory.

    • @moddaudio
      @moddaudio 2 года назад +1

      I agree that there is a lot of marketing hype around this, but it needs a microcontroller to support midi. And since it stores presets, all knobs must control digital potentiometers. Sure this was done in the 90's for midi controlled amps/preamps, so nothing new. Still it is an interesting pedal that I would not mind hooking up to my distortion analyzer for a video.

    • @eirikstor
      @eirikstor  2 года назад +1

      The presets are one thing, though. A not the thing that I care about the most. The mood knob is what' is interesting with this pedal.

    • @moddaudio
      @moddaudio 2 года назад

      @@eirikstor My guess is that the "Patented analog morphing core technology" is a digital pot in series with the diodes. Probably one to adjust hard clipping, and another for soft clipping.
      Digital audio muxes are also commonly used in tvs and hifi to switch audio signals. My guess is the JHS Pac Rat uses these to switch modes.

It sounds like a solid versatile drive which is good + your review covers it very well🤘 On the other hand, I can't help myself but the white gimmicky design is just wrong for a pedalboard. It looks like a synth module 😀 And I really hate the marketing "overstatement buzzwords" around it. There are plenty boutique producers which are humble yet doing the marketing right. @@eirikstor Could hear it very clearly in one of the riffs you played here. Rock on, your reviews are awesome and I'm a drummer who don't know shit about playing guitar 😂

    All you need is an EQ pedal if you wanna make a paddle sound similar to another one

    Over time I have realized that I have been disappointed by pretty much every drive pedal I’ve played through. My issues are that 90% of drive pedals seem to be based on the same basic formula, which is, boost some region of mids, cut bass, and offer nothing but a tone control for eq sculpting. I started dealing with this by only considering drives if they have a full tone stack, bass mids and treble, or at least bass and treble, then I gradually moved on to mostly just paying attention to preamp pedals to get around the issue entirely. I find it particularly funny that that this pedal doubles up on one of my biggest complaints - a tone knob instead of a proper eq stack- by giving you two (!) tone knobs, 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

    I'll always tune in for your demos & especially the Homme stuff but I'll take a hard pass on a $300 OD.

      But you only get one and a half regular overdrives for that price, without anywhere near the same versatility, without MIDI and presets, etc etc. So sure, if you’re simply set on a simple and myopic perspective of a number figure for a single item regardless of its merits and the fact it would replace several overdrive pedals, then I guess you’re right. But if you have a more considered look at it it is incredible value for money.

    As if the Automatone MKII didn't already exist. It's got presets as well.

      The Automatone is great! And this one is great. Very different pedals, actually. The presets on both pedals are just one of the features that makes them good.

    Wonderful! ....The first Wedding Band OD -in-a-Box. A second rate cover of the OD used on the tune you are covering. Buy a Modeler if you have to that ....but leave the analog OD to a guy that can make just one 'Killer' sound not dozens of second rate crap!!! Name me one player that 'counts' who is or was a trend setter that will put this on his board....come on just one???

    This is super gimmicky and full of buzz words. The mood knob just sounds like different clipping/filter modes - which already exists on plenty of overdrives/distortions. The tone is good and the variations are nice, but this isn't some breakthrough they're marketing it as.

    Obviously digital modelling will put every overdrive ever made into one pedal, with plenty of new sounds too...this pedal is just analog on life support...not a rebirth
