What is YOUR overhead rig set up? Love hearing how you guys are riggin' things!
HI
stopped at 2:15 to comment how awesomely you built the drama. huge fan
yo f the rig I wanna learn that card trick 😂
Hahaha i searched forever for a good overhead rig! My newest rig is about the size of a room.... about half way through my latest live stream is mine!
You inspired me to change up my RUclips content (for the better) thank you!
Only Peter can make an overhead rig video interesting haha 😂
hahaha
😂 Well Right.
Hahaha Peter definitely makes everything interesting but have you watched Casey's video on his overhead rig? I'm pretty sure a clip of it is in this video but both rigs have the characteristics their owner! 😂🤣😂🤣
Bruh I swear...lol
TravelFeels soo true😂
OUU C-Stands. I have such a love-hate relationship with them, but always worth it. AND NOW I OWN 6 of them. GREAT IDEA AS ALWAYS PETER.
I've read "I'm giving away 6 of them"... 😆
For those of you who want to get a C Stand for this, here's a few important safety things you need to know: It's safer to have the tallest leg of the stand directly underneath the arm holding the weight, and have a sandbag on this leg (or two if you need more weight). If you hang it on the end of the grip arm, it could be knocked off if you bump it. Secondly, make sure the arm is tightened on the right of the stand, so if it comes slightly loose, the weight will tighten it back down as it's turning righty-tighty. If it's on the left, it will loosen as it falls, and end up crashing to the ground. Pete has this right at 6:22 for reference. If you flip it around and look from the perspective of his sandbag towards the arm carrying the weight, his arm is on the right of the stand.
Sorry for very late reply, but trying to sort out a setup my end.
Isn't the sandbag at the end of the boom acting as a counterbalance?
Therefore, we should probably have more sandbags > as you suggest on the bottom to keep the base stable and in place, and any additional weight at the rear of the boom to counter the weight of the camera, or is there a better way of doing this?
Peter just seems like the nicest dude.. hope to meet ya one day brotha!
You guys seem like the nicest dudes! If your ever back in MTL can we please link up?🍜👀👌
Yes theory I love you guys you are the best
OML YES THEORY!!!
damn its been two years
I like to believe Peter was destined to bless us with his insanely cool personality...
Haha awww. That’s kind of you :)
Peter McKinnon There. You proved it. Thanks for responding man!
Lol. Agreed
Can't forget those sweet card tricks.
But if only there was coloured smoke or fireworks.
By far my favorite intro!
He is a killer at this ! I've *replayed like 5 times* ..
The only way is that he changed the card when we go back to fullscreen..
Or *maybe it's magic* .. Who knows.. Haha !
Rise I know how he did it . Am into magic and he didnt do any jump cuts. It a very simple trick but very powerful.
Eric Hong I cant tell u how its done but, lets just say when he showed the 10 of hearts, there was another card behind it (if u pause u can actully see it. One more thing, the king of hearts was forced. Meaning he wanted u to pick the card.
When I feel uninspired, I would come to your channel and watch your videos Peter, your enthusiasm just bring my moods up and make me want to go out and do stuff 😊❤️ really glad I found your channel
Amazing! Thank you for this setup idea!!
That was the best intro in the world. That blew mind !
I'm by no means a magician but I know a few tricks here and there. I find it's almost cooler to know EXACTLY what it is he's doing to trick you and STILL not being able to catch it because of how smooth it's performed.
He used to be a Magician, well he worked for a magic company as a videographer... this is actually why i started following him :p
I knew he had a background in magic but I didn't know he worked for a magic company! Any links to his old work?
Jeff St. Jean ruclips.net/video/TzaE25HNTRc/видео.html here is one, there are plenty!
Jeff St. Jean its a very simple trick but very powerful
*That Intro Magic was LIT!*
Bharath Raj yeeeh
I like it too
Dude just gotta tell ya... great content, great vids ur rocking it here on the RUclips ! We need more creators like u !
You're humor and charismatic energy earned a new subscriber!!! Also awesome videos :)
"Hey Maddy!!" (My sister) "Come hold this camera over me like this" "Yep now hold still!!" (My Overhead Mount)
Another thing I miss out on being an only child haha
Yeah Ive tried that before, they usually get bored and leave you haha.
Pain in the arm... ouch.
Too funny! hopes she doesn't move. LOL
The reverse mic hack is a huge winner! Thanks Peter!
Best intro on RUclips. Ever. Bar none.
PBWhat's up guys!!??!
hands down!
but it's half the video.
Finding your channel was like striking gold. The long amount of time I've watched your content has taught me so much that I'm able to translate to everyday photography even on my phone which is the current primary as I am yet to buy a DSLR, but soon. So thank you for taking us along on your journey.
First 2min I'm like: wtf I'm gonna watch card trick tutorials all night now :D
Tobi Schnorpfeil Filmmaker du hier?
Ich steh auf Kartentricks :D
That trick was called “the Chicago opener” and also “the best card trick in the world” it’s a classic in magic
Yeah, I thought it was kind of weird but I'm like its Peter, who knows what hes gonna do.
Dude wtf intro was actually sick!
well he was a magician before this
Definitely my favorite channel on RUclips right now. So much creativity and inspiration to be had. Thank you for what you do.
I use an overhead rig in every one of my cooking videos. I use a microphone stand with a smart-phone mount to hold an iPhone 6S+ that records my overhead shots using the Filmic Pro app while simultaneously screen mirroring everything its recording to an Apple TV connected to the 70” big screen in my living room. This allows me to cook and also look up and see what I’m actually recording.
This has worked quite well for my purposes and it’s well-received by my audience. But I would like to upgrade from an iPhone to a “real” camera to match the Canon 70D I use for straight-on shots. But the trouble of finding a way to support a larger camera combined with the lack of screen mirroring to the big screen as a monitor keeps me in my current rig, for better or for worse.
I was just wanting to learn about overhead rigs, what perfect timing! Thank my dude!
Love it Pete! Thanks for always keeping me inspired!
Love the way you make you videos fun to watch while at the same time you enlighten us with your knowledge
Nice. Always like seeing different ways to accomplish these types of shots.
At my house, my desk has a tall hutch. I have a small Joby for my phone. So I can lay it out sideways off the edge of the hutch with weight on it, mount my phone and point it straight down. Not the most professional setup, but it works.
Yeah I did not have any of the gear so I ended up putting a shoe on top of my phone to get the shot. You gotta do what you gotta do
Peter your spanish skills are lit hahahaha I was surprised you actually said it correctly
THANK YOU!! Even the mic tip was gold 👌🏼
Not sure if this has been said yet, the highest leg of the c-stand should always be towards the weight of grip arm and sandbagged (you have it away from the weight). This eliminates the potential of tipping. Then you can use a lighter sandbag up top near the first knuckle as a counterbalance. I like making sure I always have a 25# at minimum when working with c-stands. Your setup is light here so you can get away with potentially a 15#. This is sort of how I did an overhead shot once; I didn't think to thread an adapter to a second knuckle, I'll try that next time. I wish grip arms were longer so I could do a wider space sometimes. Thanks for showing!
6:36 SOMEBODY TOUCH MY SPIGOT.
KDCloudy somebaby touchet ma spageeeet
too much pewdiepie consumption is bad for health😂😂
Very nice lol
meme review 👏 meme review 👏
I give this comment an 8.4
Thanks Peter. I was up late last night looking how I could DIY my own overhead camera for my channel. I'm now buying the c stand via your link and I appreciate how timely this was. Thank you.
Appreciate that! Thank you! its served me well!
what size spigot did you get on Amazon?
this is exactly what I'm needing right now, perfect timing! thank you!
Gettin' riggy with it!
This is something I've actually got a use for. Thanks!
Dude the reverse mic is a game changer! How did i not know that trick! Nice diy overhead rig Pete but thanks for the mic tip!
Yeah, it is such an easy solution that I never seemed to do in my videos. Definitely a game changer.
Another cool tip that I would use a DSLR is for a second hand portable audio recorder. Just take the lens off and use the mount cover only. Change your settings to the lowest quality for video and just use whatever mic. Then in post, take only the audio file and delete the black video file. It is great for doing a lot of sound effects or voice overs.
Yeah. Point the mic at the thing you're trying to record. TOTAL GAME CHANGER!!!
Been going through some tuff times and ur vlogs keep me happy so keep on keeping on buddy thank u😊
Sal hang in there bud! Things will get better!
Awww sending you so much love xx
You are a lesson in great videos. The intro - while a lot longer than your usual intros - was captivating and gorgeous. I've been watching overhead video setups on youtube for a while now and yours (both setup and video about it) was by far the clearest and most informative. I learn so much from you so thank you, and keep on being awesome.
That intro had me in stitches! So good. Thanks for the great advice on the overhead rig. Been thinking of setting one up for ages. Pure awesomeness!
I’m gonna be trying this for my videos!💯🔥
Yeah I tried this as well and it worked out really well.
Gaff tape a RED to the ceiling and hope for the best
Hahahaha
there just props anyway ; ))))
And put a pillow under it just in case XD
Lol
tried that and now im down $40,000 😂
Your videos are always full of fun as long as educational, really love the stuff you make , keep it up 👍🏻
Really! I can’t stop watching your videos you inspired me and so many people so PLEASE keep this going
Thank you for this! I'm in desperate need of an overhead rig!!
Welcome!
PETER YOU INSPIRE MY WHOLEE VIEW ON THE WORLD.
Yeah, he inspires me too! My cinematography has gotten so much better since I started watching his videos. Check mine out!
excellent post Peter, you're just getting better and better!
Everyone of your vids has something that blows my mind!!
Hi Peter, thanks for this video ! this monitor is indeed sweeter than some of the recipes I create on my channel. Pretty sure this is not open to Canadians, so good luck to everyone entering. It is because of your video I realized this monitor exists. Sweet indeed. Just followed you on your Insta and Twitter. Thanks for the great video !
Might just be my favourite intro yet!
Me too!
Haha it was so funny to watch. Love it
Amazing how your life experiences contributes to your videos pete, nothings been a waste of time :) entertaining & educational as always
Cinematographer, actor, and now illusionist/magicial - Total package - You got it all Peter - hihi
haha you always make the most boring stuff so interesting to watch! I don't ever plan to buy one of those but i literally couldn't stop watching the video 😂🙌🏽
kels xx
Yeah I feel the same way, he so good at making anything look or sound interesting.
Hey Pete! Great video my man! I usually connect a mirror in between two c stands and aim it down at a 45 degree angle! Then I point my camera from a tripod up to the mirror! I like it because I can easily change my camera setting from the tripod!
Wow, that is such a great idea, I always end up pushing the wrong button when I do stuff like that.
That’s genius
You rock man! This is probably the best OVERHEAD video I come across on youtube.
THE BEST INTRO I EVER WATCHED ON RUclips! dang naise sir , been following you for awhile now and it feels so good
Forget that overhead rig set up, lets talk about that card trick!
...
jkjk, Great stuff Peter!
Only PM can hit us with a 2:15 Second magic trick before the intro card and keep me engaged until the end.
Hah this is a throwback!
c-stand was my favourite purchase of 2017...for top down shots!! game changer...and brilliant explanation and demo of set up.
One of your most artistic creations! The delivery of this was so good! Thanks for this!
That's a lot of gear haha great vid as always!
GOODNESS! Thanks so much for this. Need this desperately to shoot my DIYs 😁
Awesome! There’s so much to be learned from watching your videos and... and!... the inspiration and motivation that can be gained with every post is invaluable to someone trying to get back into the world of photography. Keep up the great content, and thanks!
Oh geez awesome over head rig, precisely what I need!! Thank you!
You just KILLED the intro ⚡️
That intro was so good.
That’s it. How dare this man post nothing but high quality, educational and entertaining content. You’ve left me with no choice but to subscribe.
:) Keep up the good work man
I need this extra monitor for my camera and your tips always useful.
You’re always a delight to watch . Love your videos man !
Haha, I wish this was around when I was looking for overhead rigs! I use a mini tripod on my drafting table with a Manfroto attachment weighted with a couple of sandbags. Here's a tip: You can flip the vertical on the footage so that people are watching from your POV.
you need to make a special video doing magic tricks
Haha I will. This year. Promise ;)
A collab with Chris ramsey would be appreciated
ThatKidElijah 28 agreed
PM are you totally awesome man, New stuff every time i visit yoir channel, really apreciate that!!
Peter keep rocking it! dude your killing it love your videos -
Keep nailing your videos...since there from 100k subs
Same here... he rocks
The arm goes over the highest leg, Peter, what you doing?!
Also noticed that..that's why it'll fall over
Absolutely, and the sandbag goes on that leg.
Great video as always! I loved the tip about mounting the mic pointing to the back. The overhead rig is awesome!
Since I start watching your videos, my photos and videos are getting better, I use each video as homework and I try to follow your recommendations, thank you for doing this
Golden pro tips from the master!
He always comes in so clutch!
Johnny Allende Just checked out your channel. You need to get uploading again, you got some talent!
Are you talking about me?? Or Peter McKinnon haha?
Madison Beach thanks appreciate the kind words I plan on uploading soon working on a few projects atm :D
Where’s the link for the “jig” you mentioned as well as everything else besides the c-stand?
Awesome as usual..you just nail everything you do.
Man!!! Your intro's and video's are just a bliss!! Thank you for existing brother xD
I would give a kidney for Pete to teach me film and card tricks...
Haha Im right there with you!
Hella cool intro!
As always, another great one. Love seeing the card moves.
You can never go wrong with the good old C-stand 👌🏿
Peter Speaking in Spanish! hearing that was like hearing Justin Bieber Singing Despacito! Lol
Well that all went **over my head**
Thank you for sharing your set up with us. You rock.
Love the card tricks. Great overhead shots/filming, will definitely use on my future studio.
Yes he brought out the cards!! He's a keeper!
Clicked thumbs up at 0:19 s mark.
I click thumbs up even before I hit play because my sieve of a mind could forget by the end...
You sir, deserve very subscriber! Keep it up my dude and thanks for sharing your overhead rig
Another super excellent video Peter!! So informative, so entertaining and so beyond awesome!!! 🙏
Btw. legs on the c-stand aren't properly placed. You'd want the uppermost (also the longest) leg pointing in the direction of the load. You're welcome :-)
was just looking for someone with this comment! An important tip for C-stands.
My first thought watching this as well.. Also no dirt on that long leg..
Good job otherwise, built this rig for lightweight cameras a lot.
Tony Lorentzen yup! In the same boat. I knew someone had to have already made this comment before I did. Great video though!
Absolutely... not so much "DIY" though. I had expected more two-by-fours and odd clamps, but as with everything Pete does things with style ;-)
sickkk! Shouldn't the large leg of the c-stand be in the direction of the camera doe?
Ya lol Woops
Hey Pete, Thanks for Inspiration, love your work. Appreciate your hard work
Love your channel man! Cheers from Japan! I’m just dying to build my new space, and make some cool setup now!
those card moves tho 4:16
Great video! Here's a tip I learned the hard way: Always put C-stands with the highest leg towards the subject you're filming. If by any chance the C-stand falls/get's blown over, it will never fall towards the subject/model/actor!
Good advice
dude, basically every video and editing tip I type in, you have something for it, IMMENSELY helpful brother. Thank You.
I love your intros its but this one is beyond amazing!!! The best and entertaining way to start a video.
Early Gang!!!
Buy a mirror, put it at a 45 degree angle, point camera at it
This is what ive been looking for! Thank you Peter for explaining in such detail. Also amazing card skills. Never knew you were handy like that👍🏻
I would have clicked off for that long ass intro if it was somebody else but it’s Peter McKinnon 🤷🏻♂️
Haha, I feel the same way, he is so good at keeping the viewers interest.
