I just dragged out the original GW 'Fellowship of the Ring' starter set that I received 20 years ago, and so this is of particular interest. I have unsteady hands and cannot paint well-those tiny details are beyond me-but hope to have a go, though nothing so ambitious as what you are doing there.
Incidentally, the distinction between 'goblin' and 'orc' is largely due to Peter Jackson. It is significant that in The Hobbit, 'Orcrist' is translated from (what was then) Noldorin as 'Goblin-cleaver'.

Mate, please keep it up. Excellent production value. I've been dying for someone to paint middle earth miniatures properly and show off the entire process. There's plenty of painters out there that are really good, but they are mostly painting larger scale and/or hero scale miniatures, and their techniques are frustratingly hard to apply to the tiny middle earth range, especially to the old low-detail models like these goblins. Well done!

@@SwordsandBrushes I used blue stuff to create 2-part moulds of the pike heads, and then a 50/50 green stuff and milliput blend to create the heads out of. Just green stuff didn't get the detail I wanted, and pure milliput was too brittle. The shafts I made out of 1mm brass rods. So conversions were mostly just clipping off bows/swords and drilling out hands, with a few arm repositioning.

    • @SwordsandBrushes

That’s an excellent idea! And a good way to save on costs as well. Especially if you need a certain amount of a particular weapon type :)

@@SwordsandBrushes i started collecting when the battle games in middle earth magazines came out many years ago and managed to collect thousands of pounds worth of stuff. I eventually sold all of my collection (for next to nothing) after feeling a bit of ridicule at the time for collecting and then a lot of pressure from my girl friend at the time to get rid of it all. I started collecting again in april this year because i had really began to miss the hobby and i’ve already recollected a lot of what i lost from my original collection, including lots and lots of goblins, many of which are still awaiting painting

@@SwordsandBrushes i’ll have to look at it. I think zorpazorp also does something like that with the old magazines. I now need 23 of the magazines to complete the set. It has been very nice starting again as my painting ability is far greater than it was back then. As a teenage i used to paint far too heavy coats and i only used citadel base coats. Either the other types of paints and washes werent out then or i simply had no idea they existed. I didnt really have access to the internet back then and didnt have a GW shop anywhere near so relied entirely on the very limited GW stuff a local model train shop sold and the instructions in the magazines. Games workshop brushes are good too, I find some of them are a little bit and miss but mostly are ok. If you wanted some more expensive ones (but not totally breaking the bank) then there are Windsor and Newton series 7. They are about twice the price but I have found them to be very good quality, and with a bit of care they last ages! I have also tried a couple sets of “miniature painting” brushes that have been advertised on Facebook - about £12 for a set of 10, unfortunately they have been utterly useless. I just use them now to add PVA glue to bases / scenery as they are very low quality.
I hope that has helped you a bit, please do let me know what you end up getting as it’s Christmas soon :)

If they don't have them as individuals yet then it's in the sKin Tones set, there are more handy useful colours in that set too :)

I can certainly add them to my list :) I will have to buy some minis for them. At the moment I’ve got the next half a dozen planned out.
My journey through Middle Earth continue soon! :):)
