Love your video, mate. Only small tip is the "electronic" sound kinda obscures your voice a bit if it can be toned down a little. Keep up the great work! Love the space vibe.
Great review! Your findings mirror my own with the A9III; it really is as good as it gets right now, and despite a couple of little quirks in the spec sheet (base iso) it really is leagues ahead of everything else and brings us to the shores of global shutter
Thanks for the comments. I love engaging with the community. Only a few seem to know the secret. I think this camera is the sleeper of the year. I spent time today determined to have a play with ProRes Raw. I’m currently a Resolve user so part of the challenge was how to get the footage converted to something raw, that was still Resolve friendly. Oh boy, did that little adventure unlock just how good this camera is. I’m biting my tongue… but wow. It’s pretty impressive. Video coming soon!
Thank you very much for your effort to make such video. 2:44 Just after the highlighted text, it is written "However, the richness of colors is better with redcode raw as colors quickly lose saturation in underexposed areas with the sony A9 III." This is a common issue with the hybrid or small form factor cameras. Who ever suffered from this, understands the issue well. Secondly I dont have any experience with A9III, but so far I heard the colors and dynamic range out of this camera is not so good, most probably due to the sacrifices in order to make it a global shutter camera. You are the first who praised A9III in that matter that I have seen so far, which makes this video more interesting.
Thanks for the detailed comments. In regards to color vs the red… the Red tends to shift green whereas the Sony becomes desaturated. IMO, the end result is similar, colors are lost. I think perhaps desaturated might even be easier to deal with vs everything becoming green cast. But I’m not a colorist. When it comes to dynamic range… well, I bought this camera thinking I was going to prove that the dynamic range was rubbish… remember, I’m a Red shooter. Perhaps subconsciously I wanted to prove that Red had a monopoly on global shutters. But after shooting with it, both in stills and video, I feel the dynamic range is on par. I tested against numerous cameras… the Canon Eos R3, Fujifilm XH2S, GFX100 II and the Red. After exhaustive testing I was satisfied that the dynamic range was actually pretty good. But more importantly, the exposure latitude, which is how much you can recover in shadows or highlights is easily as good if not a little better than the Red. I wanted to hate this camera, I went into this testing admittedly biased; But the Sony won me over. If you’re curious, perhaps try renting one?
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 Very interesting news for me. Thank you again. Shame on Sony that they did not do what you did. Their marketing was targeting outdoors flash photographers, event and action photographers. Though, I am shooting on Fujifilm xh2s. I actually suffered recovering colors on the heavily lifted areas. It may be due to my experience using davinci resolve, I dont know. But I feel Red is much better on this. (just feeling) If A9III has at least the same exposure latitude with RED (in general) with global shutter and with such ease to stabilize using gyro data, for me and for my expectations from a camera A9III would have been a good match. I will certainly grab a A9III for several days somehow and experience and compare it to other cameras that I have, especially to my RED komodo x. Thank you very much you made me sad and regret buying komodo x 😀. Just joking. 👍 I wish you the best with your underrated channel and with all of your works.
Thanks, I'm glad you are impressed - helps my post cognitive dissinance, as I never paid so much for any camera prior to buying this. I'm newish to video, liked your 'credentials' so subscribed. I'm a long experienced stills shooter, who used to be a Nikon devotee and never thought I'd ever change eco systems (but that's another story). Got my a9iii last week. Agree AF is a new order of magnitude. Much still to test with global shutter, video stabilisation, high-flash sync for environmental portraiture etc, but best in world (quite probably for AF on native Sony glass), Coupled with ultra fast FPS makes capturing stills action 'easier than ever'. So far shooting Red Kites (stills) I only pushed it to 60 FPS. Anyway it's my 7th Sony body (all were impressive at time of buying, but tech envelope keeps evolving) and is, bar absolute resolution, easily the best most complete camera I have ever owned. Looking forward to using it for sports, video etc. It can augment my FX3 and a7iv both of which I'm retaining, I won't use for landscapes but the improved Eye-AF should make it a supreme tool for mono "street" genre with my 24, 35 and 50mm f1.4 GM primes. It's a natural too for sports action (skiing and motor racing) which is the first reason I bought it. Final thought ..... Sony vs Nikon vs Canon vs a few others benefits all end users as R&D resource is leveraged in the leapfrog game of driving technology for commercial benefit. If we just had a monoply Canon I'd bet progress would be glacial like! Dontcha just love healthy competition?😊
Wow, congrats on the new camera. I can see you’re liking yours as much as I am. The Sony is my go to these days. Perhaps the best all rounder I’ve owned. I got to shoot it at a wedding. I was experimenting with the A9 III, performing crazy camera movements. Thanks to the global shutter the footage avoided the usual nausea inducing jello artifacts. I think the A9 III is one of those “special” cameras. Which frankly, these days “special” is a requirement for me to purchase. Thanks for sharing!
Lots of great information, you're the only one on RUclips mentioning the great 1080p for example. I'm about to pull the trigger on an a9iii primarily for video, would it be possible to share some slog3 files for me to have a go at, purely for making up my mind about this rather expensive investment :)
Thanks, I just try to share what I learned from shooting with it. I’ll see what I can do in regards to footage. I’m editing some new footage to try to show the benefits of the global shutter as relates to camera motion. Look for it toward the end of the weekend. I’ll try to post a link to the footage once it’s live.
1 stop less than the V-Raptor, however when Extended Highlights is used on the V-Raptor X, there is nowhere near the latitude. Also, your test for the Sony being +2 exposure, is tweaking the DR for the upper range. Yes the A93 has very nice "noise" structure which is even and organic, and so is very easily cleaned up - which defies the Imatest results.
Extended highlights is a bit of a gimmick. The camera takes two successive shot taken at different exposures. Its use can easily cause ghosting artifacts. Arri, Canon and Panasonic are all able to capture simultaneous dual exposures, which is far more usable more of the time. Keep in mind what Sony achieved with A9III, is done without the need for a massive heat sinking fan. The camera consumes literally 1/10 the power of the Red and at 1/5th the price. They squeezed in the best AF currently available on any camera… period! And IBIS. Imagine what they could do in a cinema body utilizing this same sensor. In any case, I just did back to back test against Canon‘s newest flagship… so far it’s not looking too good for the Canon.
You should try editing on final cut with the Sony. I notice there's better low resolution visuals even on 144p quality. Might output better with the a9iii
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 I don't know if the a9iii does pro res but those things might not matter for movies since yt compresses so much. You can always "upscale" with final cut even if the original footage doesn't use prores
Nice comparison. Gotta say, there are not many things I dislike about this camera, but colour science still doesn't seem to be as good as Canon or RED, it's just more of a flat video-like image rather than filmic and more dimensional. Subtle, but it's there. Maybe someone will eventually crack it with the right LUTs or something.
Thanks for watching… and for the comments. I love to engage with fellow filmmakers. Don’t be too harsh on Sony. It’s easily my lack of skill color grading. Yesterday I decided to pull out the Ninja V to see how different raw looks from the Sony. I can’t say it’s an “in your face” difference. You gain maybe a half stop more dynamic range… Which is only perceivable if you pay very close attention. That said… and again it could just be my CG skills, but the image feels thicker, if that makes sense.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 I am not trying to be harsh, I just comment on what I see everywhere with my eyes regarding A9III footage (so it's not your grading). Canon has many idiotic things like level disappearing during recording and so on (unless one uses R5C...), Sony having a much more useful two-way tilting-flipping screen etc. But the video image in my opinion is more pleasing in general, and the potential loss of 1-2 stops of dynamic range does not irritate me as much as colours. Maybe it can be fixed, I just don't think it is that easy in every situation. Consistency is the key, if the colour science is less good then it will behave differently in different lighting etc. Cameras like a 5D Classic or Nikon D700 have no video capability at all. If they were able to shoot video, colours would surpass the hybrid cameras of today, they are far easier to post-process and both look amazing. I like the 5D III raw video colours too, but the usability and quality is too far from today's standards. i really don't get why we need to step back in these fronts, but over time I suspect AI may provide new in-camera solutions to better replicate certain looks of old models, etc. I had the Leica SL2, quite poor video specs with line-skipping, stupid fixed screen, but colour rendition was quite pleasing, so I may try to score an SL2-S next.
I couldn't listen to the end because of the sounds in the background. And it's great to see those two cameras in action, but your face is out of focus the whole time. Good luck
I’m sorry that you couldn’t hear the end. I generally try to balance the background 2/3rd lower than the voice track. I might have made a mistake. Regarding focus, the anamorphic are not as sharp as modern lenses, so I believe this might be interpreted as being out of focus. I monitored focus with peaking and used a wireless follow focus to dial it in. So it should have been pretty close. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
I’m old school and love the nostalgia of it all but the high pitch does burn into your ear and ultimately your brain 🧠 😂. I love how you took the criticism from those who don’t understand where it’s from but their point is solid. Great video overall and I will be subscribing.
