Derek the phrase,"We're all just walking each other home" is such a great way to describe just about any shared experience in life where we carry each other along just by being there. Thanks Derek for sharing and helping us all walk each other home in spirit.
You are experiencing real Americans. The news hypes the extremes. But Americans are the realest honest folks you’ll ever want to meet. We look after each other. So glad you are happy.
Loving your videos and the girl who was walking without shoes for a while… she is connecting with Mother Earth at the cellular level, taking in all of the energy of the land, all of the micro biome of the AT soil. Priceless! ❤
All the lonely people, Where do they all come from? All the lonely people, Where do they all belong? Loved the sentiment of what the trail brings…though honestly nature does that. We all just waking each other home ❤
HELLO YOU,dear Derek..............wish you a happy Easter and a great walk...................isnt it difficult for you to walk with other people?????? your great Ireland walk you lmost was alone................take care of you,my friend☘☘☘
Great to see someone packing a robust tent and not sheltering beneath what looks more like a large pitched tissue paper. You will appreciate that during wind and rain conditions, and be drier.
My thoughts exactly. It was beginning to look like RUclips hikers camped with fairy cloud quilts under a tissue tent with kit so lightweight it fitted in their pocket. Fair play to them but Hurrah for the robust hiker ❤
@@DartmoorPaul - True...I look back at Hiker's photos from the 1990's and before and the Women were commonly and successfully Backpacking larger pack loads than many of the Men want to pack today.
I watched your first video…I felt like you were speaking to me. I look forward to more from you as you trek north. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your journey with us.
I hope you keep these videos going all the way to Katahdin. These two videos have captured what the trail is like as accurate as actually being on it. Derry Girls meets the AT. All the best. Class of ‘23.
At 5:16 into the video...great observation and absolutely agree. In most cases, when you put the peoples together...from different cities, states, or countries...they largely get along. It is Governments that divide people and this is by design. A divided people, kept busy and distracted by government created narratives...pitted against each other arguing over race, gender, sexual preference, religious beliefs, etc are much easier to rule over. They don't want the People coming together, educated in critical independent thinking. A "dumbed-down", divided society bickering over nonsense is less likely to pay attention to the ruling class, discovering the chicanery they are commonly engaged in and holding them accountable.
Thanks for sharing. I notice you have a little gas stove, so gather you are not cold soaking on this trip. Is this because of the social aspect of siting around cooking together?
Your videos are unique, amazing, just so special. I am a trail angel in Maine and I love the AT and the hikers. I hope to meet you when you come through this beautiful state!
Wonderful, Really comes across in the video the warmth of human friendship in a non-judgmental environment. It’s refreshing and uplifting, but also kind of sad, that the hiking community is one those rare places where you can say what you feel, be who you are and no one judges. It’s something I know that I would benefit from and hence my goal to hike the PCT in 2026. Your videos are inspiring me to do it.
Thanks for the update Derek, looks like a great group of people to keep you company. One question: How many pairs of footwear do you expect to get through on this journey?
Bravo the barefoot walker 💚 Ask Bob to shine at home for us in Ireland next time you see him ☀️ Loving your adventures so far! No matter how long you spend with anyone. You are sharing in a part of each others life; what a beautiful thing 🤍
It's been 2 years since my thru hike was cut short by an injury in Vermont and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the trail and all the wonderful people I met along the way. I get emotional when I look back and think can I, should I give it another try. Everyone I talk to other than thru hikers will say why would you want to put yourself through that again. They could not understand why I made the first attempt and find it even more difficult to understand why at 70 I would ever think about a second attempt. Sure it was difficult and uncomfortable at times but then something amazing would happen and you wouldn't want to be anyplace else.
@DerekCullen You're in "the bubble". Most folks start the trail this time, so there's a lot of people. There are some folks who started January who are nearly half-way done now though, and it's not nearly so many people. I follow a lot of different channels, the perspectives are always different, even though I see the same trail all the time 😊
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, commentary and unique perspective. You are indeed an Irish Philosopher. You remind me of a favorite quote by one of your countrymen, George Bernard Shaw. "Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself". I am looking forward to seeing how you create yourself on this journey. Perhaps Shaw would be a fitting trail name....
Hi Derek, I was wondering if you started the trail with a warmer sleeping bag (like 0 deg F) or would that be overkill? I was thinking the warmest bag to start and mailing ahead lighter gear for later warmer temps is what people must do. Im loving the insights youre sharing on the people. All the best to you. Savor every moment!
What date or month did you begin? Looks like march, to me, based on foliage. “We're all just walking each other home" i love this! I miss having a best friend, knowing we have each others back… makes all the difference.
It's crazy how much this looks like my own back yard in New Hampshire. We're technically part of the same range. Re: the Appalachian... the story is that if you hear your name being called out in the woods or see something like an animal that looks like it wants you to follow it, do nottttt go into the woods. Stick to the trail! 😅👻👾👽
8-10 miles? Maybe for the first couple of weeks if you're in poor shape. Most people average 15-20 miles a day. If you only do 10 per day you will need some luck to not be snowed out of finishing.
Quick Derek! Think of a good trailname before you become something corny Irish. The people you meet on the AT are amazing and yes politics and religion are unofficially out of bounds as topics of conversation. Happy trails.

Cheers Padraig, yes that’s exactly what I meant with the phrase - for me, you and everyone else 🙏
Derek you are a God send.
What a great soul you are.
LOVE and PRAYERS FROM kilkenny IRELAND

Finally someone who says Appalachian correctly
Hi Derek
That's a great way to be.
Free and happy. Enjoy the journey home.
Cheers Michael !

Thanks very much. It’s a lot of effort lol I’ll do my best to get 2 episodes out each week 😊
Having the best of times just and with all them lovely people.
It has been amazing so far !!
The story unfolds so sweetly. Love the way your eye captures life and breath!
That's put a smile on my face. Wishing you and all on the trail a very happy Easter Derek. May the path rise to meet you 🙏 🇮🇪
Ah great to hear it Mick. Cheers 🙏

OMG. You such an inspiration. G’wan Derek.
Love it that ye are all together just us all walking home
the AT has become its own social media platform...in person

So glad I found your channel. I'm going to hike the AT one day. Maybe when I retire. You're doing great. Keep it up.
It looks so busy. Wasn't expecting that. I thought you'd be on your own out there. It's nice to have the company I'm sure.
Yes there’s a lot of hikers attempting the trail this year. I was number #1491 to begin the trail 🙏

Happy Easter! Hope you packed an egg!
Hey Derek happy you are happy ❤You look so good.
What kind of trees are in the forest?
Thanks for sharing your journey with us! 🥾🏕️
Loving it
You have put into words all the reasons I want to do this trail
Hope the weather stays okay I guess in the high areas it's still cold.

Where are your co-hikers from and what are their reasons for doing the trail? Walking & talking is the best therapy!
What date or month did you begin? Looks like march, to me, based on foliage.

That creepy 😜
I’m curious what do you do if you find someone’s item left behind do u leave it or drop off at a shelter like someone’s walking sticks .

I have a question, why don't hikers wear a proper hat. All I see mostly is baseball style hats?
❤✝️
If you meet ten people on trail, how many tell you they're part Irish? (My guess is eight out of ten) :)
Watch out for Bigfoot 😅
Keeping an eye out 😜
