  • Cold, dark, remote, Antarctica is as close to space as you can get on Earth. Humans conduct research in Antarctic bases on a wide range of topics, from climate studies and astronomy to glaciology and human physiology and psychology. Dr. Stijn Thoolen, the ESA-sponsored research doctor based at the French/Italian Concordia research station in Antarctica, discusses life in isolation in what is often referred to as White Mars.

You seriously keep making me want a job in Antarctica more and more. Need to find what kind of jobs a humble vet like I can help support science.

Was about to apply for a network engineer position few years ago. That's inspiring and intimidating at the same time not for the risks about remote and polar location but because of this kind of unique situation. "Am I ready for this kind of journey?" Wonder if I may find the answer.
Anyway, this is great to see what comes from Concordia on social media. Thanks, and keep being great!

Amazing video Esa ☺️👍📸. Greetings to Stijn Thoolem and everyone to Concordia Station and three other stations in Antarctica from Slovakia 👋🇸🇰🏔️🌨️☃️👨🏻‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬🥼🔬👨🏻‍⚕️👩🏻‍⚕️. I love Antarctica 😍. I would like to go there once, sometimes 🚁. It is a dangerous place but also amazing. You see a beautiful night sky there if there is not a big snowstorm. And see the amazing aurora borealis 🤩📸👩🏼‍🚀🔭✨🌌.

I know someone who goes to Antarctica from time to time. They have to basically do a lot of work helping the crew in order to simply be able to be there and collect the samples of algae. Also, if you want to see penguins, the station should be near the sea, in the inland station you can usually see a penguin only if they wander so far by mistake, and they will surely die there without food. But Aurora is more likely to be seen inland, and in the winter.
