funny to see him destroy people in my rating range. Puts things into perspective
1500-1600 is basically 1700-1800 without tenacity to go for what you really want
Crazy to think he’s 1000 points higher rated than what some call “advanced” chess players
10:15 tripped me out. Looked weird watching the pawn go straight through the rook like that
Middlegame plans:
Most common plan after hippo setup is push c pawn if it is attacking oppoent's d4 pawn (assuming you are black) without too many defenders. Or push f pawn attacking e4 pawn similarly but often loosens your king up more. Always make sure it doesn't leave the pawn it was defending hanging.
OR if the opponent pushes d5 or e5 (assuming you are black) you lock up the pawn structure and then play the pawn break to the base of opponents' pawn chain (which is again an f5 or c5 break). Also good options sometimes are to push your b or g pawns to the fifth rank, bring the hippo knight behind it, and then attack on that side of the board with pawns and knights - rooks too sometimes. That's especially true if your initial b or g pawn push attacks a bishop on f4 or c4 as it gains a tempo. You can even do this in front of your own castled king if you're an aggressive player.
Not sure if that all makes sense but try those ideas out, or rewatch the speedrun with those in mind. Thing is Eric doesn't often go for these normal middlegame ideas because he zones in on inaccuracies from the opponent and finds very concrete lines. Not as easy for mere mortals though!
Source of the above info - There is a guy with great hippo content on youtube called The Chess Giant
I don't know why it's so funny to me when he casually says stuff like: "Rook. Eat. Mate." That was at 22:02. I actually laugh out loud.
I started 30 correspondence games two weeks ago playing exclusively the hippo opening. I began at 1750 and am now at 1900.
Wow thats great mate
I am stuck at 1450 for what it feels like ages
Hope one day i reach your level❤️
Favorite speedrun you boys have done. Keep up the good work Eric, I always enjoy watching your impressive play with the hippo, and have been implementing your strategies into my own games and have seen an elo climb of 100 points using the hippo alone. Appreciate the fantastic content, keep it up!
Love these speedruns!
I'm following the series, but I think you could make more commentaries about the strategic features of the Hippo, especially as white.
Agreed. Would be MUCH appreciated.
He's said it's not great as white, it's stronger as black, and even then it can be countered pretty easily. As white he's basically setting up and then using GM level tactics so I don't think it's something with many strategic features to discuss.
@@derekandaubriel6291 he doesnt have the class as Aman GM...nor the swag but he does crush all easily....
Looking forward to Amans french speedrun
Did he start it ?
love these videos on the Hippo!
Was eagerly waiting for it. Thank you sir
The moves are so sharp, damn eric
More blood into the hippo's swamp! :D
Eric listens to the best chess music
Love these!
Finally! More hippo action! :)
That first mate was confusing, lol. Felt silly after rewinding. GMs are too quick sometimes, 😂
feed the hippo
I can't get enough of it
hippo is scintillating
i love these hippo speedruns, im playing it with mixed success, the people im playing at around 1000 dont seem to make as many blunders as i see here, but i keep trying. one thing puzzling me, on the first game why could the bishop not have taken the queen on the check mate, thanks for great videosl
Exactly lol, I'm also playing in the 1000 elo bracket and no one seems to hang anything on the diagonals like they do here at higher ratings, very frustrating tbh.
He premoved taking the bishop because the king was in check and the only move for white was to block the check with the bishop
There’s a difference between a high level blunder and a low level blunder imo
Because Eric and other very high level players make better moves, which makes it harder for the opponent to play correctly. Therefore more mistakes.
It's because you don't see the game like he sees. You're not setting things up. If you'd like a reason why I think this way - it's because you thought the bishop could take his queen in g1..
1:50 someone in chat asked at what elo they should play with black pieces? I don't understand do they think you choose what color you get? Are they just resigning every game they get with black? I am trying to understand what led to this question. Are they just trolling? If so they got me
I get a lot of opponents aborting the games as black on lichess. Maybe some folks just do that as a rule.
Is there a streaming schedule on Eric's twitch? Would love to watch this live
My favourite series by far
Anyone know the song at 6:40 ? just curious, I like the beat,
FINALLY
Kinda makes me want to play the hippo
As usual you make the most complicated moves/strategies look easy. And I seriously doubt that the credit lies with the Yppo opening...
In serio the first match saludos desde un sevillano pragmatico li.. siempre disfrutando del chess nice home 🏡 Erick
We missed u man
This is eeasiest opening 😩❤
37:45 😭😭❤
Eric R: Oh no my queen!
Eric H: Oh no my queen also!
@@juhonieminen4219 what ??
Who is eric R and eric H ??
@@Brucelee-pv6uf Eric The Red and Eric Handsom. Two viking kings from 9th century who loved their queens.
Love the Hippo but still haven't gotten the hang of it. Middle game initiative is hard to achieve.
I feel like this is where I get stuck as well.
16:16 when hippos collide...
The purest soul in chess community ❤
What’s the song at 11min
7:00 what's the name of the track brah?
Whats the intro track?
4:00 you missed BxR
Why they play like 400 against you and GM LEVEL against me?
4:01 now I see a rook, maybe not a good trade according to the position of the bishop? Someone let me know y he didn’t take rook
Second rook is guarding it
@@nephgod6413 a rook is better than a bishop
probobly missed it like the rest of us scrubs lol
queen mouse slip :D
At 2:50 was not Qc2 able to be captured by the king?
stats? wins, draws, losses??
You be coming to India next month? But maybe I ain't got time. Sadge.
Is chessbrah owned by both Eric and Aman?
Yeah I was at the boxing match last week sitting behind two loud & rowdy guys that turned out to be Eric & Aman. Aman wouldn't stop commentating on Jake's poor boxing skills until Tommy went down & Eric jumped out his seat screaming "IS THIS THEORY!?!" After apologizing for spilling his drink all over my Romanian supermodel girlfriend's white dress Eric ended up explaining how they both use the Chessbrah proceeds to fuel both of their crippling gambling addictions. Eric had Jake for 1,000,000 & I could visibly see tears running down his cheeks. Aman might've won that night but it's us brahs who are the real losers for enabling their abhorrent behavior to continue. Don't support these guys.
29:50 did u srsly just say toe tar oh?
sounded like taro to me
Check, check, checkMate 😊
incredible how proud eric is crushing 1500s
Don't quit your day job for acting. lol.
Are you really 1500 player???
Wait! @:32 Queen moves and you automatically missed the free pawn! Please try harder for us noobs.
first
this opening has been my top opening for a few weeks now, very fun and informative
Not a bad choice. Kings indian is another good one with nd7 and nf6, the classic one.
These 1500's are trash 🗑️. Where did you find them? I play 700s stronger than this every day.
Actually I spoke too soon. After the first couple games they did play twice as good.
