My first Subaru was a 1978 Brat that I used first to get to the jobsite when I was logging, then as a motorized wheelbarrow on my 40 acres in the mountain. It served me so well with the little 1600 engine that I got a 1985 DL with the high/low range 4WD. That was my favorite. I took it hunting into the way back hills and never felt that I was going to not make it out. Then a 2003 Forester, which was also a very good car. We sold that one and bought a 2023 Crosstrek for the wife and a 2023 Legacy for me. I'll probably be driving a Subaru till I die.
I was leery of the CVT, but it was the only option on the new cars. I hate being stuck behind somebody that doesn't like to go fast on corners, so I'll pass as soon as I can. On a couple of recent road trips, I was impressed with the way the CVT sometimes downshifted multiple gears to give me the torque I needed to make the pass. I don't have an issue with them now.

I was always intrigued by Subarus, and got my first one 11 years ago - an ‘06 Forester - and immediately fell in LOVE. I put almost 150K miles on that car in those 11 years - took it to about 215K. It was still ‘worth’ fixing, but not when I would’ve had to pay labor for it, and too many main items were getting too worn on the 19 year old girl.
Upgraded to a new ‘24 Forester Wilderness a couple months ago and love it.
I’ll never own anything besides a Subaru (& likely always a Forester) - can’t beat their AWD, functionality, & durability. I also like the outreach that Subaru does with their charitable donations.
    Subaru Love Forever 😍

My biggest beef would be how Subaru did not either notice or bother to replace the head gasket issue with the turbo gasket and kept having dealers reuse the old one. In that sense they deserve some shade for it but at the same time most people who bring up the head gasket issue insinuate it is still an issue and ignore the fact that vehicles of other brands also experience head gasket failure.
The other complaints I don't get. I actually enjoy driving my Forester with a CVT and while someone may have to be more cognizant while merging onto the highway from a rest stop (i.e. 0 to 60), I have never had any issues passing on the highway, including crossing the center lane on a two way road. I have taken multiple multi-state trips and it is easily the best road trip vehicle I have had. It'll be interesting to see if the transmission complaint will remain as prominent as they add hybrids in the next 12 months. Maybe the drivability critics will still prefer an AT (or a manual) but the perceived lack of reliability should disappear.
I have to admit the Subaru bug has bitten me. I now have a difficult time imaging myself buying a different brand at this point despite having a very open mind.

Love the channel and what you do! One to add to your reason to love list...during the pandemic, Subaru did not jack up the price crazy like so many other car makers did. Been driving Subaru's since the 80's (first was a '76 GL and various models til today, a '16 Crosstrek and '19 WRX/STi). Next car will be a Subaru...will eventually swap the Crosstrek for an Outback Wilderness. Yes, I've had other makes/cars in there as well, but Subi's my fav. If Subaru would give you the option to turn off the fake shifting, I think people would learn to like the CVT better.

Wanted a reliable all wheel drive car to move to Northern Nevada where there is winter snow. Decided on Subaru because of reputation of all wheel drive. After watching many MrSubaru1387 youtube videos I decided I could deal with the normal wear issues I would encounter with a used Subaru in my price range. Have dealt with normal replacement on suspension wear items, and the infamous single layer head gasket issue. My first Subaru is a 2003 manual transmission 2.5 liter Outback. Seems to be a good value so far with 177K miles. For a mature driver looking for reliability I have not been disappointed.

I'm an avid Subaru person. I've had quite a few over the years. At one point, I had a Subaru from each decade from the late 70s to the late 2010s at the same time . Right now, I have a 236k mile daily baja, an almost 200k 5spd XV, and a 79 Subaru DL 4wd wagon that I bought from the original owner. It does seem like most of the "enthusiasts" are the WRX and Sti owners. If I show up in my 45-year-old Subaru, no "enthusiasts" really cares or even know that Subaru's were made all the way back then and could care less. I actually get more reactions and interactions with non Subaru enthusiasts ironically.

Going to be completely honest. I come from a "GM Family". My dad worked and retired (1997)from GM. We usually had GM cars. I became a "Saturn" guy - which while a "different type of car company", was still under the GM umbrella and I could use my GM family discounts. The last Saturn I had was the Aura (which really wasn't "a Saturn" at that point) - and then Saturn folded. The local Saturn dealership turned into....Subaru. Mostly the same staff/salespeople. My dad had passed and there was no longer the GM family discount. So I traded in the dying Aura and got a Subaru Legacy in 2014 (it was the brand new 2015 model). Got a very good trade-in deal for the Saturn. I mostly drive as commuting to work - and long trips in various terrains. The Legacy has now lasted almost 11 years. No major problems. I had the "whistling window" issue - and they fixed it at no cost. I get the oil changed pretty much on schedule and keep it at the proper level in between. (I always heard those stories about Subaru and keeping the oil in proper order.) In these almost 11 years, I'm now on the 3rd battery. No complaints. Gas mileage has been pretty consistent since new. I'm coming up on 100K. Car runs fine. It's reliable. I think nothing of driving a few hundred miles for a trip. But even though I know Subarus are known for going over 100K easily, I'd like to trade it in. BUT....I'd like to get a hybrid for my next vehicle. So right now I'm in no rush. The car runs fine, and I'll wait and see what comes up as far as hybrids. I keep hearing about next year. We'll see. But I guess I'm no longer in the "GM family" - I like the Subaru, because it works, it's reliable and has proven itself by lasting almost 11 years through 100K miles, temp extremes and all kinds of road conditions. None of the Saturns lasted even 10 years before I was ready to trade in. I'll add that I really like the Legacy - and I know it's now being dropped. Not sure what model is "most similar", but I don't really need anything "huge". So I guess I'll be checking out other models and see how they compare.

My parents bought their first Subaru..an Outback wagon in 2011. I went with them to the dealership and found an Outback with a manual transmission..probably one of the last ones made...should have bought it! They traded the car for a 2015 Legacy sedan. Better interior quality and a more refined ride and handling. I drove both and found the Legacy to be a great balance of handling, comfort and efficiency. My brother and I took mom on a long distance trip in the Legacy and had averaged 30 mpg on the highway runs.
As a widow, the Legacy was a great, reliable car for mom. Never any issues and the all wheel drive worked great during the winters. Now one aspect of Subaru is safety. Mom was in a car accident last fall. A driver merged into her lane and forced her car into a traffic light pole. She walked away without a scratch....at the age of 88 years old! The car was totaled...and the drivers side and side curtain air bags deployed. The right front took the brunt of the damage but the cabin was intact. The first responders were able to open the doors and get her out without issue. She replaced the Legacy with an Impreza. She liked the hatch back and the smaller size...plus the base model still uses a key versus push button start.
And my daughter is shopping for a Subaru and I'm thinking a WRX would make a great next car for me.

My 4WD '90 Justy had an ECVT. Loved watching the speedo go up as the tach went down. Subaru was first with the CVT and, I think, they got it right. My Justy was 3 cyl and 120 degrees off so perfectly balanced. My '00 Impreza wagon was the perfect do-all grocery-getter as was my '79 DL wagon. My '18 Crosstrek is my perfect car. Just enough tech, do-anything, go anywhere in any weather. My tire guy said "they'll climb a tree if you want to".

    • @kenweller2032
      @kenweller2032 4 часа назад

I knew the Justy had a CVT, but you said eCVT, so I looked into it and found this specifically about the Justy. Fascinating!! Was the Justy a light hybrid back in the 80s?
"The ECVT system employs a couple of conventional synchromeshes as a means for forward/reverse change-over and uses simple hydraulic control valves. This combination enhances the transmission's efficiency and performance. Additionally, the ECVT can be considered a hybrid transmission since it converts mechanical power from the engine into electricity, which is then sent to the wheels and stored in the battery. This hybrid functionality allows the vehicle to utilize the battery's energy instead of the internal combustion engine when the battery is sufficiently charged."

    • @rodh2168
      @rodh2168 Час назад

@@kenweller2032 No. The "ECVT" is "Electronically Controlled Variable Transmission" meaning is was controlled by a computer just for the transmission. There was another computer for the rest of the vehicle. It was in no way a hybrid. No electric drive of any kind. Totally mechanical. The reference you quote is for something else. My Justy was one of only 8 2-door 4wd ecvt Justy sold in Canada. Most were 4-door. It was 2wd until a button was pushed which engaged a centre diff engaging the drive shaft to the rear wheels which made it 4wd. Another cool thing was the electromagnetic clutch rather than the hydraulic torque converter clutch in my Crosstrek.

Having come from a variety of small sports cars I expected my 2023 Forester to be underpowered and was pleasantly surprised to find that is not the case. The instant throttle response and great handling make it feel quite quick in all driving situations except one. If you pull off the interstate and need to accelerate very fast to get back on, you will feel the one weak area. In 99% of my daily and travel, there is no issue. The Sport interior is excellent in comfort and looks and the overall functionality of the car is super. Great sound system in that trim too. All the hate makes no sense to me but I’m not a luxury car fanatic. I am glad that I bought. a 2023 before the display size got so stupidly large and they made the Sport less attractive.

Just bought our fifth Subaru (24/25 Crosstrek 2.0L). Guess that says everything about me and the wife. Interesting to hear about apparent issues with interior quality and seat upholstery. Never had any issues personally, including in my 23yo Outback with 260,000km on it that is my current daily and has had a real (hard)working life. Interior is still outstanding, no rips, stretches, tears or shiny patches on the cloth trim. No rattles and everything still works (plus I really like the logical way the dash and controls are put together, using more screws than plastic clips - makes it easier to remove without breaking things to replace stuff like dash globes, controls and so on).
All Subarus sold in Australia are manufactured in Japan - would it be to crazy to ask whether maybe the poorer lasting interiors are mostly in the US-built models?

On my second WRX. If you’re going to modify them you’ve got to realize the limitations and understand that it is expensive to modify the vehicle correctly. I think so many people do cheap mods chasing big horsepower numbers rather than asking themselves what it is they want to do with the vehicle and build to that specification. If you’re looking to build a straight line racing car or street fighter, there are much better vehicles and platforms to build on. I choose the WRX platform because I enjoy winding roads and the lighting quick acceleration. I also live in an area with rain and snow so it’s great to be able to drive it year round (correct tires of course). Plus…it’s great to be able to take the whole family on fun adventures too.

Now I do miss my 2003 Dodge Ram with a Hemi ! But my subaru get a little better gas mileage LOL! As far as performance goes, I really don't have any complaints.

Have had 5 WRX's, from the GV to the VB. Loved these since I was a kid and just enjoy how they drive. Never had a single issue with any of them and no other car feels quite like it. Supreme confidence in all weather conditions also made this a car I trust and will continue to own one forever.
My only gripe is with the VB and how it desperately needs an STi variant (for me at least). Very light mods *JB4 make it peppier but the chasis deserves a full blown STi.

I buy older Subarus because I cannot afford a Toyota. ;-) But I do love how reliable my Subaru's have been overall. Newest one I have ever had is my current 1998 Legacy 2.5L GT wagon. Minus the head gasket issue and the constant oil leaks it's great.

I Bought a subaru crosstrek wilderness in the end of October 2024 , i now have 2400 miles and love it. I mainly bought it because of its reputation and reliability . i went with the wilderness because of its towing capacity and tranny cooler i live in the north east with a lot of snow . i cant wait for spring to see how well it handles my 1800 lb basstracker boat. My insurance also dropped almost 100 dollars per month because of its safety ratings. Again looking forward to posting my experience with its towing capability

I love it. There's a fair amount of road noise, but it's a lot less than my 1982 Jeep CJ-7 I was driving.
The Crosstrek is fun to learn how to work on, repair, and maintain; CVT for life... ❤❤❤❤❤

2015 Outback, still going strong. Rather than using it for a trade-in, I might keep it for myself and buy my wife a new 2025 Outback. The only thing I don't like about Subies, the road and wind noise. They could at least use some spray-on sound deadening on the front firewall and inside of the doors before assembly.

Bought a Subaru Forester manual from my friend,A 2001 model it had a 103,000 on it of course the head gaskets went a month after I got it then the rear wheel bearings then the drive shafts in the front and the Center Drive Shaft. I Was absolutely hating the car but I bought it for Lake Tahoe trips and the first time I brought it to the snow it was snowing hard people over on the side of the road putting chains and spinning out and I just went roaring right past them, it would not have been a feasible car for somebody who had to take it to a mechanic luckily I can do all my own work quite easily. I'm still driving it probably will till the wheels fall off. I will always buy new motorcycles but I could give a damn about having a new car. I use this car for kayak fishing for about 10 years windshield channel is rusted out so I'm going to have to cut that window out and repair all the rust because it's leaking now. Saltwater is brutal.

I test drove a new Toyota Rav4 before I bought my Crosstrek in 2019, and I couldn't believe how much more stable the Subaru was in a crosswind at highway speeds. No comparison, I bought the Crosstrek and never looked back.

I became a Subaru owner when the first Outback came out. We put 300k miles on that car with absolutely no issues. We put 250k miles on our next Subaru. We had a few issues but nothing terrible. Then our next 2 Subarus had head gasket issues. Subaru absolutely denied there was an issue. I paid to fix one head gasket $$$$. Then the second Subaru had the same head gasket issue. At this point I was over Subarus, but then my dealer went to bat for me and Subaru paid the bill. During the work a head bolt broke off in the block and Subaru put in a new short block at no charge. That was great service and their actions almost restored my faith in the Subaru brand. We were at a point where we knew in around 100k miles we could be faced with another head gasket issue. We still have one of the Subarus and the head gasket is leaking again. At 200k + miles I’m just adding oil and refuse to pay for another head gasket.
Subaru had many years to correct the head gasket problem but refused to even acknowledge there was an issue. If Subaru had owned up to and corrected the problem I would still be a loyal customer. I will no longer support a company that refuses to take care of its customers. They have the best all wheel drive go anywhere system. If a brand refuses to take care of me then they’ve lost me as a customer.

I have my first Subaru, a 2021 Crosstrek, purchased new in fall of 2020. I bought it due to the size and function and also the "love fest" that so many owners have. This car replaced a 2003 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix). They are similar size and configuration (4 door hatchback) which works for our usage. Considering the 18 years difference I expected the Subaru to be more advanced and better than it turned out.
Transmission - I am not a fan of CVT's but on recommendation decided to try it in the Subaru. After a couple years I am not a fan: based on how it feels and how it sounds.
Fuel mileage - the Vibe did better around town, they are both about the same on the highway. The whole point of the CVT was to increase efficiency, but it doesn't.
Cargo area - The Vibe had the advantage of a perfectly flat floor with the rear seat folded down. The Crosstrek is not so flat. Plus the Vibe had multiple storage bins in the back, including with the spare tire area. The Subaru does not have that.
Reliability - My Crosstrek already suffered the coolant system failure. At least it was covered under warranty. It also had a failure of the power adjust front seat. $600, not covered by warranty.
Result - I probably will not buy another Subaru.

I’ve had 2 Subaru Foresters and now I have a Crosstrek. Before that, in 1982 I bought a simple Volvo 2-door, manual transmission that I drove for 28 years. After a lot of research, seems like Subaru was the only car that would even come close to that wonderful 'made in Sweden Volvo' so I switched. Still driving Subaru even tho it has too darn many 'features'. Sure would be nice to have simplicity again!

At this point we're Subaru lovers. My daughter bought a 2006 Impreza in 2008 and it was a good car. My wife got a new Impreza in 2013 and it was okay. We didn't like the CVT but we lived through it. Then I bought a new Outback in 2017. That's been a good car. In late 2019 my wife was on the receiving end of an accident that totalled her '13 Impreza. She was so impressed with how that car saved her she insisted on another Subaru - a 2020 Forester. And finally, recently, i was concerned how Subaru was going to change the looks of the Outback for 2026 that i traded the 2017 Outback in for a 2025 Outback i guess that 5 for us. .

You're right that newer Subaru interiors are nicer for sure. Over the years, I've also found that the quality and lack of rattles are in the limited versions. I've had both premium and limited of many of the cars over the years. Currently a 17 Legacy limited and 18 premium so I can compare directly. Also have a 19 manual Crosstrek and it's interior is certainly cheaper than the Legacys. My son's 20 STi base, I find to be nicer than any of my cars. They're learning to do better.

I have the oil changed every 5K with filter and maintain it with Subaru recommended maintenance schedules. I have always believed when you take care of your car, it takes care of you and I will continue to maintain it and hope to reach 250-300K in a few years. I have looked at the newer Impreza models and one thing that really turns me off is NO SPARE TIRE ??? Really ???? So I'm satisfied with the 2020 and will continue with it. Bought the 8 yr-120K extended warranty just in case, but have not had to use it yet. Subaru is a great car and I wouldn't drive anything else.
