  • This is me potting a pickup for the second time. The first time was a semi-disaster. Thanks to Aaron at Rumpelstiltskin pickups for fixing my vintage 1966 neck pickup again. I put a link to the disaster video at the end of this video. Now, to know if it was successful, I still have to install the pickup and crank it to see if it still squeals. My theory is the less potting, the more touch sensitive the pickup is. We'll see.

A tip I picked up along the way, use a heating blanket to warm the pickups before they go in the wax. Works like a charm.

I can see having to do that for sure if you were doing this for a living. I thought about sticking in the oven for a little while at 150F but I'm not sure my oven goes that low. You could probably hit it with a heat gun too but that is probably dangerous. Letting it sit there for around 5 minutes did the trick. I'm installing it this morning to see if I cured the squeal. I take it the heating blanket is made for industrial purposes because a regular heating pad probably doesn't go very high. I think it would be great to get it at exactly 150F so you could dip it in and out in a minute or so.

@@millstap I just use a regular heating pad. I also have a cheap infrared thermometer to check the temp. The pickup doesn’t have to get to the full 150. I just wrap them up in small batches and leave them for 10 minutes or so. Think I got that tip from Fountain City Guitar Works. 👍

@@bbmade I just did a high gain test on the neck pickup and I think I got it fixed. No more squeal. I don't have strings on it yet because the EVO Gold frets need a little recrowning. The don't wear hardly at all but they get this weird sort of wavy look to them between where the strings make contact. The StewMac Z-File made quick work of it. They look like new now. I hope I don't have to do this again but at least I know how to do it now. I just want to see if I was able to preserve some of that touch sensitively that I experienced without the potting.

Don't shake or drain any wax when pulling the p.u. out. Could empty the voids you are wanting filled

And the girl in the thumbnail was at the party? You wish. Installing and testing today. I certainly hope the squeal is gone because this is becoming a real marathon.

Butyrate humbucker bobbins will melt in the potting wax, the Duncan custom shop guys talk about the disasters they uncover repairing PAFs owners have tried to pot themselves.
Obviously it's not a problem for single coils with vulcanized fiber flatwork but maybe it's worth mentioning for crossover viewers.

Great videos as always! What's about wax potted vs. lacquer potted pickups? What difference? Some rumours claim sometimes the company used lacquer potting instead wax's but I don't get it when they did that; pre-CBS days or CBS ones?

Pre warm the pickup before you dip it.

Its called plain enamel wire. You can still get it today. It has that same color. They used plain enamel for the 60s pickups and heavy formvar for the 50s.

It worked perfectly and sounds better than the original. Do the flash potting. It should be enough.
