- GUTHRIE GOVAN VS ALEX HUTCHINGS VS GREG HOWE

I never compare Alex, Greg Howe and Guthrie. They just mastered their own style and techniques. These three are such great musicians. Love them all.
right. but for my ears, Guthrie's guitar is too planky, mid- and bassless, Howe's video sucks bc of the recording equipment
Greg Howe is a genre pioneer. He is a huge inspiration for many in the fusion scene and has been doing it for many many years. Guthrie is offcourse a genius and Alex one of my fab.
Howe has something more than just a sophisticated choice of notes and excellent technique... an inner feel of groove.
He really has a lot of groove
Totally Agree, Loves ''Howe's'' Natural feel, and choice off notes, he just flows so Awesomely!!
True innovator ..Was doing it when we were all in primary school
Groovie Howe is definitely the grooviest guitar jazz fusion
@@coisa985 bro your up there in the same catagory! Not many if any..Amazing
Alex is one of the best right now. Mellodic, fast, rock, jazz, prog, you name it.
Maybe it's the most fun.
Guthrie no doubt just lvls above them all ...
@@MusicLessons good call! His personality is so much fun he cracks me up and always replies to my messages😍Guthrie is fun also a bit of a hermit ha love them all..Greg very serious quiet fulla isn’t he
@@leviforbes301 Have you heard Holdsworth, Gambale, Garsed, Lane, there are so many guys than can make him look like an amateur, and Guthrie himself will be the first to say so
@@tubo777 having an opinion is purely based off what I prefer I've herd all these guys and I choose Guthrie simple as that 🤟
Love all 3 song much!! Just think Alex and Guthrie grew up listening and learning Greg! Greg is the true innovator, I find his style the hardest to play.....Alex my favourite guitar tutor! Guthrie was my fave educator for years! His feel is awesome taken every style and made it his own 💯Thank you all 3 guitar masters for your love ..Love you all
Greg howe is so unique! Will never get tired of his playing.
The first time Greg met Guthrie he actually freaked out and said he needed more practice 😂
Ritchie Kotzen too!
Greg is good, but he only have easy skills. Most people can play his stuff.
@@heut4384 Copying others is an easy task. Greg actually has a vast knowledge of harmony and timing which most players lack
@@בןמאיר-ג1ד Actually...no, copying others are a lot harder. Remember, there are people that can copy by "note to note," but they will not sound like the real player. Sorry, I can't really reply your post. We're from USA. Our writing are from left to right. Lol. So when every I'm trying to write, it would screw my English writing. ??? .
Guthrie is on another level in my opinion. Few manage to remain truly melodic at speed yet he finds ways to insert these wonderful phrases in blisteringly fast runs. Other 2 are obviously outrageously good but Guthrie has a way of making my ears smile they can't match!
Have to agree... the musicality on Guthrie's playing is a step up on the other guys. The others are super talented for sure, but in terms of this particular shootout video GG wins hands down IMO.
Yes Its your opinion... My opinion Greg is the. Best
@@karlsalocks explain drive home
The 3 are very good
My preference goes 2 Guthrie!!!
Hard choice
I have to agree.
I never liked these “vs” vids, all great in their own way, style, playing personality
All heavy inspirations to so many of us
I’m just glad we still have players like this keeping the shred alive
they all suck ahahahahhhaah
Greg is so genuine. Love his playing
Guthrie has figured out the notes most appealing to human and with his unparalleled left hand technique while maintaining style is just god tier. How can someone be so good?
These you bucks are inventing techniques that Guthrie has never used. Not saying they're better, but we have to assume that the following generations will always produce new and innovative guitarists. It's not like humans get worse at creating art.
It certainly isn't a contest, but in terms of shredding, I'm sure you'd agree that guitarists were not sounding like Guthrie at all -- we had to evolve to reach that tier of excellence. Tim Henson and Marcus King being total opposites but amazing. And the Asian Invasion of shredders is over the top insane.

@@matthurstbridge9180 that’s preference imo and I friggin love Matteo but technique and improvisation is debatable. Matteo covers Guthrie’s songs so naturally he looks up to Guthrie but I strongly believe they’re both equally good composers.
@@IshmamAhmed No offence, but you're not a true musician if you believe that.
Ps) Being a composer is an entirely different discussion.
(...there are two types of composition. One type of composition is done in the moment and live - better known as 'improvisation'. The other type is a 'before type' of composition - A composition which is trialed, perhaps altered and perfected with many attempts before the final product is released.
The latter part of the term 'composition' is where they may be equals. But the live term of 'composition' or 'improvisation', Matteo is God gifted and is can be clearly heard through by trained ear.

If you listen to their albums and work, for me Greg Howe is on top. They don't call him GOAT for nothing. I never get tired listening to Greg. Cheers!
Who calls him GOAT?
@@Communism.is.a.cancer "they"
Great players every one. Those last six notes by Guthrie were nothing short of remarkable.
We cannot compare them because they are unique ☺️✌️ ❤️
Greg Howe is the one for me, such unique style
Guthrie is much more emotional and fluid and on time. A great player also reacts to the drums and other players in a more dynamic way than just blasting through scales that aren't even that interesting anymore.
Yes, these are some good distinguishing qualities of GG for sure. That said, whose music is most impactful to you as a listener, overall? I would certainly say GG has created some beautiful music, but I think Howe's catalog is a lot deeper than GG'S and filled with some very beautiful music. For example, the "Introspection" album.
@@a.s.2426 yeah gg has the best improv but I think Greg Howe has the best catalogue of music by a good margin.
@@mikek3927 I was thinking that GG is close to Howe in compositions, but I think you're right, it's actually by a wide margin.
@@a.s.2426 I know what you mean. I listened to Guthrie's music for a bit and then moved on and haven't really gone back too much. I discovered him through his work with Steven Wilson, who isn't particularly a guitarist and has a catalog of beautiful music that I would is pretty impactful on me. I'm into all sorts of prog rock and jazz that is adventurous both cognitively and emotionally. I haven't listened to Howe very much at all but i'll definitely give him a listen.
@@Ritual_Gaze That is an interesting point. Thanks for sharing. I will have to check out Steven Wilson. I also have rarely come back to GG's music after the initial binge listening period of a few weeks. In that regard, it doesn't seem to be very timeless art, despite being technically impressive. It's still pretty good, of course.
Very distinguished. Absolutely with their own approach. Great pleasure to see them all!
Guthrie - more phrase-oriented, Alex - I like his chromatism and whammy work, Greg -silky smooth lines. As for chrom …. I like them all!:)
Greg was doing this stuff from the early 80's when there were no resources, no internet, no complicated gadgets and no gizmos. Such a pioneer to the Jazz Fusion genre. ❤🙏
When I listen to Alex I can see influence of Frank Gambale (sweep and econom picking technique style), Steve Vai (melodic, legato, tapping), maybe also a little bit like G.Benson, Y.Malmsteen, and other. Plus Alex is most musical guitarist, his playing is great mix good technique and nice melodies. For my ears is better combination, than rest guitarists. Imho.
ME TOO
Alex hutchings is always on fire when interms of improvising and playing live he mastered gambale's sweeping, progressions and phrasing!
Guthrie Govan a wizard on guitar The Aristocrats band released all of his mind blowing skills!
Greg Howe the innovator! you can see Alex and Guthrie's influence to Greg a very unique guiter hero in this modern times!

Nope !
@@matthurstbridge9180 This is probably the saddest comment I've read on youtube .
Music isn't a competition.
Both of the guitarists you named have zero or
All three of them have spent years perfecting their licks and inventing their unique sound and style. Greg is Senior in terms of having innovated so much of that Fusion style even before those Proto Cosmos days. Hutchings is brilliant in his legatos and jazzy voicings. He IS awesome indeed. Guthrie, what do i say :( He aint human to begin with. He knows the fretboard and what notes would pull your heart out n jaw drop even without you knowing it. i end here. No set of words would serve enough to speak about him lol!!!!!!!!
In this one Alex is musically more impressive than the other two monster players!!
These are my 3 favourite guitarists ever, with the exception of Jimi of course. i have had the honour of meeting Guthrie and talk/comment regularly with Alex on YT about his videos and music. They are just beyond amazing. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎸🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎸🎸🎸🎸✨✨
We have no position to judge them. Their guitar ability is extremely insane far above us all.
I've been most partial to Guthrie Govan, but Greg Howe is also very impressive
Glad you liked it. What other guitarists do you admire?
@@MusicLessons There is a ton of amazing players that came out of the same late 80's/early 90's Shrapnel era that Howe and Govan did.
Greg Howe, for sure. Totally sure, super ultra sure. Introspection is MUSICAL INSANITY. And such a good rock guitarist as we can see on Howe II band
There are people who don't like the way he plays
His come and get it vid is the best I've seen from him.
Greg make you move the head, that's the essence of music.
Three of my favorites and they all have reached the pinnacle of technique, feel, tone and phrasing. There's no reason to choose one over the other. How fortunate we are to have them all to enjoy! I've been around over 60 years and it's amazing to see how far guitar has come.
I have always loved Greg´s music. I recently discovered Guthrie who I find to be an upgraded version of Greg. They both use similar scales and choose similar paths, it´s just that Guthrie seems to know more of everything so he can add more variety. He´s played some lines I have never heard anywhere else. Also, Guthrie´s pinky is more active than Greg´s (Sorry Greg you are amazing too, I keep listening to all of your records you are a genius!) Yes, it´s true, Greg´s groove is freaking out of this world!
Vocês são extras terrestres, show! Top demais parabéns rapaziada.
All mind blowingly incredible, but Hutchinson... oh my lord, what a player.
Technical skill ranking (how difficult it is to learn to play the same lines as cleanly as they are executed by these guys): Govan, Hutchings, Howe.
Emotional impact of music (i.e. compositional skill) ranking: Howe and Govan (very slightly in second), Hutchings (very distantly in third).
In the final analysis, I think the latter category is much more important than the former.
Alex has tasteful and amazingly clean sound, which is a big deal. Also his improvisations sound more "complete" compared to many others in this league.
Yeah, my opinion as well. His phrasings are always so solid, he has an enormous feeling and musicality. No one sounds so pleasing to me like Alex. He is my favorite.
Vejo três feras indomáveis na guitarra, com estilos distintos. O Greg só de ouvir eu sei que é o Greg. Não ouço muito os outros dois mas tbm acredito que quem curti pode ouvir qualquer um tocando que vão saber quem é. 👏👏👏
TB curto bastante o Kotzen!
govan is always the most musical melodic shredder. no matter at what speed he is playing. everything he does is so musical and beautuful to the ear.
one of the very few shredders that dont bore me at the 3rd song.
Govan always plays tasteful music , most shredders only show off nonsense.... imho.
"govan is always the most musical melodic shredder" - talk about bias and inability to judge objectively. You should judge based on what you hear not your knowledge of who is playing.
Dayum, Hutchins has the Gambale method nailed down very tightly.
Greg Howe is the phrase king! Love what he's saying on the inside and how he brings it out
Guthrie, I mean, c'mon! Also a phrase king, with speed and behind the beat feel that's really the best there is for any situation.
These guys are the best, this is a great vid!
all are great and i really dig Govan's sound. shredding is great but i prefer more rock based feel.
Tough call! Although Guthrie is a 'guitarist's guitarist' Greg's technique started me down my tapping path many moons ago! I've gotta tip my hat to Greg!
Wow comparing these 3 is a real tough one. All 3 can do it all. Guthrie is very unique, as are Howe’s phrasing and note choices but Hutchings is my slight favorite bc his playing is so exciting.
I do not know how anyone can compare these guys . In their own right they are all just total class . When I was about 16 I herd Greg how play stratovarious and couldn’t believe my ears . Then he had a couple of solo albums rock style before has went in a more jazz fusion direction . Those rock albums were melodic and just mind blowing to a teenage kid hanging off every note . I’m now about to turn 50 and still remember and listen those guitarists of the 80s . Those guys from that era will still be inspiring me in another 30 years if I’m lucky enough to be here still . They were the pioneers of instrumental rock guitar .
Impossible to call.. They're all too good to comprehend
Guthrie always sounds great..so musical..
Hace tiempo me preguntaba lo mismo quien es mejor o al menos mi favorito
1 Guthrie
2 Greg
3 Alex
Muito bom
My opinion too
São guitarristas fantásticos ! Não tem como comparar ! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👍🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
For those who know, these guys can't be compared. They each transcend on the instrument, and each has their own sense of freedom. That's all the inspired musician desires to be. Everything else is secondary.
Los tres son tremendos guitarristas.
Personalmente, me inclino por Guthrie...🤘🙏👏👏👏
3 great musicians...just enjoy !!!
"versus" que término tan inservible.. los músicos expresan grandes y fundamentales emociones con su obra. Me encantan los 3, son muy buenos!
They are unique with their own style and sound all the three are my contemporary HERO 🙏 they are awesome
Cara, isso não merece competição...os cara são monstro,
Os caras são muito feras mesmo.
Both Alex and Guthrie have amazing skill. I follow Alex more, I've followed him since the early days for the Boss demos he's done. Guthrie I respect but feel like sometimes he is a little too scales based whereas Alex, similar style but his phrasing is more exciting to listen to and watch.
I understand your viewpoint and I like all three guitar players. However, I suggest if you watch enough of Guthrie’s videos I hope it will change your mind that Guthrie isn’t really just scales based. He has video lessons about breaking out of scale boxes and is a master improviser when soloing. Otherwise that’s just my 2 cents and all are phenomenal players.
@@davidocampo9707 And don’t forget the Blues Brothers
Different style of songs so we cannot use these videos to "compare" who had the best frasing/idea or melody developed. Check out videos of Alex Hutchings playing jazz, smooth jazz, pop, country and many more. He is such a master on each style, playing with the appropriated "accent".
A clareza das notas do govan são nítidas.
Qualidade sonora inigualável.

Those 3 players are so originals and differents. They possess such a high level of instrumental mastery ... ✌
Greg Howe is The best 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Todos são mestres
that little harmonic at the end of Guthries solo was so cool
Woooww.. Thank You 👏
When I was growing up I would always see the ads for shrapnel records at the back of the guitar magazines but never really had a chance to check out most of those guys because record stores didn't carry the shrapnel stuff so unless a friend lent me a record it was limited access. A couple years ago I went through all that stuff and Greg is the one that blew me away the most. My first impression was that he might be the best ever. Certainly most underrated guitarist. Period. That said I am actually a big fan of both Guthrie and Alex. They're both fantastic players and improvisers.
No one can top Greg's Joker's Wild.
Greg - because of his song material. So many memorable, groovy songs with strong melodies. The other two are a bit more jazz/fusion puritists.
I always say Guthrie, but damn, I had forgotten about Greg Howie. Greg is incredible.
Thanks for the share 🤘🎸 #Staysafe
They’re all great and have something unique.
Obviously Guthrie has won guitar but there’s no shame in being an honourable runner up. Rumour has it that Guthrie’s music is played on repeat in the elevator that takes you to the pearly gates.
From a guitar mastery perspective - technique, timing, phrasing then AH is by far the clear winner. Faster and cleaner than GG and rips outrageous 6 string sweeps (GG's sweep picking is very limited). From an influence perspective - GH takes the win and has been a rock/fusion legend since the 80s. For a uniqueness perspective - GH wins again. From a fanboy perspective, gaining plaudits because just assume he's going to be the best and so are operating out of prejudgement and expectation - GG wins.
Guthrie's tasty melodic runs are beautiful! #1 Howe's are equally impressive but a bit more staccato, spot on runs are chilling. #1 Both are what i would call experienced, fusion players. All are top players, Alex plays a bit more of the jazz style. #1 I prefer the jazz rock/fusion sound over a jazz sound, but that's personal preference. Guthrie and Howe make my ears smile!
How are the harmonics at the end of the Govan solo played? Is that a difficult technique?
I can't understand how it's done. How are the notes being plucked or how is the string making a sound I only see him sliding the edge of his right hand. Is the left hand doing artificial harmonics? Are they all on the third fret?
With your left hand you "hammer-on and pull-off" the fretboard. With the other hand, you slide through the pickups of the guitar or neck until you reach the harmonic sounds you want. Did you understand?
@@MusicLessons Thanks. It sounds somewhat easy. Is it?
For me it’s Guthrie go van , such clear tone and interesting techniques, but they are all awesome.,

Southern rock/jam band musician here. While there is 0 dynamics or feel, I am blown away by such technical proficiency. Wow. Amazing. I couldn’t play like that if my life depended on it.
If you heard no dynamics or feel your either musically incompetent or one of those guys who thinks the only thing that sounds good is blues scales played slowly like Peter green
@@joshmuz9018 probably both.
I'd go over to Alex Hutchings' channel and listen to more of his playing. Really, there's not enough time in this video to do justice to any of their playing.
Todos feras !
Mas o Pat Matheny é o melhor!
O arrojo, a elegância, a agressividade, a música, as harmonias!
Anyone know guthries scale choice in the beginning 2:07 ? Sounds like a dominant pentatonic (1 3 4 5 7) type thing or maybe it was just mixo? Insane playing from all of them
There all great but Greg howe is the inspired innovator at the age of 58 lagoto styles he laid the foundation for this stylish play....
OMG! I was watching GG today and it hit me! I used to think that there was no one to match him. There are a ton a phemons, but there's just something about his powers. Then I thought, "What about the new kid, Alex?!" Then I was stumped! I went back and forth, and back and forth again. This vid didn't help me to decide. LOL
Alex's sweeps are so refreshing, invigorating.
Mozart vs Beethoven vs Paganini ? How to chose? Didn't know of Alex, but it's obvious that the 3 are amazing!
Wow, now I need to grab my guitar. Show these guys how to to it.
They all blew my mind.
It seems that Hutchings and Govan are influenced by Greg Howe. He was already a legend when they were school kids.
Indeed.
In this video, I have to give the number 1 guitarist to Alex Hutchings, I have watched him the last few years, and he's gotten better every time I see him! #2 goes to Guthrie Govan, and #3 Greg Howe...
Alex is by far the best. He can play any style of music at the drop of a hat plus he has amazing technical skills, phrasing and melodic playing
Greg howe.... is the best...
They all suck especially Alex.Non of them has the”X factor”like a Van Halen,Gary Moore,Schenker,Uli Roth,Blackmore,Marino etc the list goes on and on..
@@peteyoung7665 C'mon man, you are comparing two very different kind of guitarist.
So u think Guthrie can't? I really love alex but guthrie is on another level
@@NurseryCryme to say GG is on another level is just to say what you expect is the right answer based on his rep. If you actually knew anything about guitar playing you would know that AH is far beyond GG - both in terms of technique and creativity. Alex is a faster picker, a cleaner player, and a sweep master. GG's sweeping is quite limited, lacks smoothness, and he can't play what AH can.
If I could play 10% of each one I would be pretty happy (and good) cos they are all phenomenal players in the their own style
Hutchings is impressive. Howe is groovy and impressive. Govan is EXPRESSIVE.
I prefer Greg's work, over the years the best (his 1st album changed my perspective !), but Alex in this setting (different recording scenario's etc) just dominated imo. His tone and forthright aggression was over the top and stole this competition imo. All 3 are fully capable of besting the other, its just a matter of what they are playing over.
Alex sounded absolutely perfect in this vid, but I think all of them are basically at the same level. For me, I actually like Guthrie's creativity the most, and I'd say he's the most versatile. But Alex gives me the same feeling now that I when I first heard Guthrie playing years ago. That feeling of excitement mixed with awe at his blend of note choice and blazing technique. I feel like Alex and Guthrie maybe have the edge over Greg in terms of technique. Have you got any material of Greg you could recommend? I haven't listened to THAT much of him.
@@alexjackson8841 Sure, I would reccomend his 1st shrapnel records release (1988's 'Greg Howe'). Imo, it has his overall best melodies. Every track has strong verse and chorus melodies. Also, I prefer his tone on it as well.....it's more distorted which I like. I feel that there is more aggression on it as well (Red Handed is cool). 'Little Rose' is like a hypnotic daydream, just very cool. The second album is also pretty cool (Howe 2). Everything after that gets a bit TOO 'Wanker/Jazzy' for me, but, that dude is one of the best soloist ever, imo, depending on what he is soloing over.
Greg Howe for me.
