The SS in SS President Coolidge stands for steam ship. It started off life in 1931 as a very fast luxury liner with rooms for almost 1,000 high paying passengers and finished it's life as a troop carrier with 5,342 troops on board in 1942 when it sank as a result of hitting two US mines, after deciding to come in the wrong harbour entrance.
