Any danger of pulling roots out? Seems aggressive.
Any reason to set to dig deeper? Can this rake scarify safely
Sometimes I think, 30s isn't old yet. Then I find myself enjoying a lawn dethatching video
I'm in the same boat
RIGHT?!?! fml hahaha
This shit just hit home too hard
My exact thoughts right now...
Story of my life.
No ads. No begging for likes. Just a man sharing his passion.. this is how RUclips should be!! Huge thumbs up!
Agreed. I was audibly confused and then visibly relaxed when the prevideo commercial was missing. And, who knew a dethatching soundtrack could slap so hard?
When I was a kid we didn't get supper till we did this to our lawn. That was 30 years ago and I still haven't eaten
You got that right. It did not take me long to figure out why my Dad always turned this project over to my brother and me. I would rake my arms off for what seemed like hours and only cover a small section.
Lol!
You had to dethatch your lawn every night!!!
😂😂
🤣🤣
Just got one of these and tried it in random parts of my yard. Pretty sure 98% of my lawn is thatch 😂
Found one at an estate sale. My friends and I refer to it as the “Death Rake.” I have designated it my preferred zombie apocalypse melee weapon
It's all about the Pulaski tool or battery pole saw :))
I am a senior, and have been using one of these rakes for about 3 springs now. It is super easy to use, removes a ton of thatch, and I can do it for hours without getting sore muscles.
I was skeptical about thatching my lawn, but after watching this video I immediately went down to Home Depot and bought a thatching rake and I also picked up one of those guys in the parking lot looking for work. Thatching my lawn was easier than I thought.
Great voice on the video. Thank you for not yelling at me. I love videos where people just talk softly and provide good info. I can tell you have a great camera too.
Best "101" video on thatch rake education.
Thank you for this clear explanation about the use of rakes. My lawn has become kind of spongy so I need to dethatch it. Found this video and solved my question on how to do it. Cheers!
Great video! I bought a thatching rake years ago but never liked using it because I wasn't doing it right! Can't wait to get out there and do my lawn! Thank you!
Knowledge is king. I've had this rake for 20 years handed down and never knew what it was for. Now I'm using it to touch up where the power rake missed some low spots and it works amazingly well and without really putting any real muscle into it. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I almost tore up my lawn, but your video saved it!
Really useful video. Thanks. I’ve just bought one of these for some ‘lockdown’ garden maintenance so looking forward to giving it a go.
Awesome vid! Concise yet full of information about adjustment, design, technique and before and after. Well done.
Thank you for this video. I have never owned a lawn and saw a lot of overlapping dead grass. Used your technique and it has helped my lawn !
Thanks for the video, I had made the decision/mistake to rake dethatch my yard I didn't realize how labor intensive it was and have about a half a football field to take care of. I've always had a lot of respect for people who do professional yard work and have even more as I slowly work over my own yard.
I just bought one in preparation of the upcoming fall overseeding. I can’t wait to try it.
Just got the same rake. Thanks for taking the time to show how to use it properly.
This is actually helpful. I purchased a thatch rake last week to do a leveling project and was using it completely wrong. Lol still worked pretty good though.
Bought one of these rakes and did half the yard today. This thing is great. Thanks for the awesome video.
Ace harware 36 dollars.
Thanks. Just bought one today and wasn’t quite sure how to use it. Amazing the amount of thatch I’m pulling out of my yard.
Great simple video. I plan on buying one and wearing myself out this weekend while prepping for seed. Thanks for the tips on the adjustments.
Didn't know why my grass was so yello even with alot of watering and fertilizing. Then i realized that the dead grass underneath was choking my lawn.
Thanks! I always wondered what the weird shaped rake in my garage was for. Now I know.. time to get to work.
Thanks for the demo. I went to Home Depot and got the same thatching rake; I can't believe the amount of thatch I've removed from my lawn.
Great info, thank you. I've been spending a ton of time cleaning my rake with the old clippings every couple of feet. I never thought to just keep going back and forth and let it clean itself out. I also never knew that you could adjust the de-thatching rake for how deep you want to go into the lawn.
Glad the video could help out! Thanks for watching.
Simple and useful video. I especially like the before and after close ups. Thanks!
Best music I have heard on the majority of other RUclips videos. The video was also brief and informative. Thank you for sharing.
Always wondered how to use the thatcher rake. Thank you for your great video
As always, a very simple and informative video. Thanks!
I bought a Craftsman one from Lowe's to remove overgrown weeds and roots from my yard. So far it's done its job. Tedious work and a good workout to say the least.
i was gonna buy an electric one. but considering i have a smaller yard and enjoy the physical work. (and cheaper) i bought one of these. love it!
thanks, I just get one and I used it and because my grass has runners it took a lot of the grass up. but I did some more and I think I had it and it seemed better but now I'll be dethatching like a pro now.
I have around 80sq ft. The UK has small gardens however I found a regular rake does the job just as good
I knew there would be a youtube video for this! Thanks so much. Nicely explained and visualized.
Very nice presentation. He would do well in television.
Great video. I'm gonna buy one tomorrow for my lawn. Can't wait to use it.
Just what I was looking for. Thanks Ryan for the explanation and Amazon link. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you just picked one up, now off to do some lawn care.
Thanks for showing how the two sides of the rake differ for different uses!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
We have a very small 950 sq ft back yard so I found this video to be perfect for us. Thanks!
Hi, I've only got a small lawn, not big enough to justify an electric scarifier, this looks ideal for my needs, my local B&Q store has one in stock, I'm on my way.
Great video, thanks.
I did my 10000 sq ft with that rake and it took me around 2 weeks. Quite the workout! I used it when i was killing off my bermuda last year to pull up the surface runners and make it easier to scalp. That was minimal levels of fun.
That sounds like a ton of work for sure.
I just did 10k sq ft in 12 hours. Never again.
Funky Dunky 1 spent $80 and rented a power rake, detached 10ksqft in 40mins, then a couple hours to hand rake and pick up the piles. Best $80 I spent all summer!
Great video just got the rack it was pulling to much stuff up the adjustment helped.
Just bought me one cant wait to wear my arms out
And back... just did my 2,500 sq ft front yard lol
Thanks for the instructions. Just what I was looking for. Great job too!
Fantastic video, very clear and thorough. Thank you!
Pretty much the perfect tutorial. Thanks
Thanks for not having commercials!
Good tutorial thanks! Bought same one today
You've convinced me to spend the $40 dollars for the dethatching rake, good explanation, thanks for posting.
Great for small lawns and hard to reach area's but electric or petrol scarifier will save you so much time it's the bagging that takes time, great vid
Absolutely correct. I love my greenworks electric machine
Thank you for sharing your video,Ryan👍🏼✌🏼
Thanks for the video. My lawn is full of dead grass blades this Spring and I was trying to remove it by pressing really hard with a normal leaf ake, which was hardly working. I had heard of thatching rakes, but thought they woold pull out the grass by the roots. I'm not looking forward to doing it, buyt I see that many people commented that they enjoyed doing it.
Thank you! Definitely need one of these.
Great job and explanation! Real down to earth! Nice kid!
Brilliant vid, exactly what i was looking for !
Ryan I enjoy your videos. You're my go to lawn guy when I need help. Thanks!
Great video! Very helpful.
Thank you!!!!! I am so glad for your explanation!!!!
great info bud, just what I was looking for!
Glad I could help.
This should work for my small yard :)
Thanks for the mini tutorial.
👍👍
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
good demonstration thanks for sharing.
Mow lawn first to ease the dethatcher resistance.....great video
Awesome info, thanks!!!
Such a proper unpacking, when I got mine I just ripped it off.
Really helpful tips, thanks so much. God bless
Thanks for the help!
Great explanation! Thanks!
Thanks. I had no idea how to use it
Excellently Done!
Well done! This guy is good!
Great job!
Thank You - Great Video !!
Ha! The music is pretty epic compared to what you are teaching us. Haha. I love it. Now I have Groove to jam too while I dethatch
Great tips
I just buyed the same tool two days ago but no idea to use it. So Thank you for posting this! BTW I subbed to you too. My yard is pretty and won Yard of Month on May but I don't know everything about my yard. Now you are my new teacher...
Its "I just bought". Grammar is a skill and a skill well worth investing time into.
Does this help with getting the Moss out thank you for your swift reply I've got a weekend coming up 🙂🙂🙂
Front lawn is a hill and also like 50% moss now. Moss is dying thanks to moss-b-gone. I really hope this'll help pull the dead moss and spongy thatch layer out. I can't really get a mechanized tool because hill, a walk behind mower is sketchy enough as it is.
Ryan your the goat
Great video!
Thanks!
Waw, amazing
Thank you, I have a rake and I didn't know that it could be adjusted. I think once I adjust it, It will be easier to thatch. When is the best season to thatch?
When is it a good time to thatch? I put winterize on already. I was wondering can I do it before or during the leaves on the grass.
nice thick lawn u got.
I lime it use it all the time 👍
very useful tool s
We call this one the widow raker.!
The thatch rake is great to take care of Creeping Charlies or other ground ivies
Good to know!
I wouldn't say it's good for that, but it's a necessary step to exposing the vines. Creeping Charlies seem to be one of these easiest vine plant to get rid of but they sprawl fast.
D'oh! I should've watched this earlier. I was using the rake with the curved side on the tines. I don't think I did much damage. I got mostly dead stuff and I planted the stolons with roots that it pulled in the dead areas.
I used a standard fan rake and it did a good job, but good lord it took a while.
I
Kinda therapeutic task, good arm workout. Sure helps with pesky creeping Charlie weeds.
I'm just starting to get my lawns under control and wondered what's wrong with using a normal rake?
I did my back lawn with a normal rake and it worked fine.
Yours curiously,
D.
Very clear information, I will get one today my lawn soooo ugly 😆👍
Glad to help.
Thanks
How do you think your SunJoe dethatcher does compared the rake?
How much pressure do we use when using these? A lot of not much? I used mine today and ripped out some grass, although it was arguably bad grass anyway.
