Mang0 - "What i've come to realize as a spacies player, is you'll never play 100%. You might get close, but it's impossible to play these characters perfectly especially consistently".
I think this sums up exactly why Hbox has gotten so much hate over the years. He found the spacies kryptonite! This is also why I find his matches so exciting, if you want to see him lose you have to see damn near perfection on display. Melee really is a thing of beauty!
Also, I recreated what Mang0 said on stream from memory, I know it's not perfect but it's a good summary of what he said.

Where you talk about the up-smash and whether Juan knew it would kill if he charged longer, it's like this:
He kind of knew. It's a game sense thing.
When you play a game for a long time especially at a higher level, you just intuitively know things a lot of the time. You've done stuff before and seen it work, to the point where you don't actively think about multiple elements of what you're doing anymore.
Both Mango and Hbox use intuitive gameplay better than anyone else in the business.
So Hbox intuition said "this might kill if I charge a bit". He didn't know the exact amount or which angles, but he knows it might kill because he's seen it work before in other scenarios in the 10+ years he's been playing.
Did he know the exact frame based on % and stage he needed to upsmash? No. Obviously.
But he knew it could work, and knew what to do if it didn't. It was a gamble where he either gets the stock, or gets a favorable situation anyway.
M2K is famous for his unique style of play concentrated on scenarios like that, calculated risk where either way he wins or still doesn't lose anything.
But Hbox and Mango use a lot of that too. Normally Hbox will opt for it more when he needs to make a comeback or just feels like going in, and Mango will do it when he's feeling himself.
Hbox Fox in this instance wanted to go for it because he could. There were other plays to make, but his intuition said that might work or give him a good situation anyway, so he went for it.
The two very incorrect schools of thought that people who have never played any games at high level are either
    "it was just a guess"
    Or
"He totally knew the exact frame and % and blah blah blah because he has God tier game sense I can never achieve".
No, he's just played a lot at high level and understands the game, and therefore has good intuition from his unique in game and viewing experience to make more unique plays that you don't see from other players who don't have that intuition built, or don't use it.

13:04 This is one thing that seems super cool about higher-level Melee that doesn't seem to exist to such a great degree in Ultimate. Ultimate's speed seems to be slow enough that you can't really start to set up multiple options without it being sort of easy to read. But I'm also not a high-level player and haven't played Melee since I was a child.

From the until around 2006/2008 she was considered roughly a mid/borderline tier character, ranked 7th at the highest. It wasn't until Hungrybox and others started dominating the scene with Jigglypuff that she was considered a top tier threat; this was reflected on the tenth official tier list where she rose up to 3rd.

I really struggle with game analysis. I would really like to hear your take on how it's done so I can finally watch gameplay for more than entertainment.

    • @turndownforwalt
      @turndownforwalt  4 года назад +3

I've read some things on analyzing game design which can be pretty applicable to this! Broken down into some steps:
      1. Without interpreting anything, describe what's happening in the game/a particular sequence. Just understand the game on a surface level.
      2. Describe the results of that sequence. How did the players interact with each other? Was the sequence a success or failure?
      3. Try to put yourself in the player's position and understand why they made those decisions. What could the player do differently? Are you finding any patterns?
I'm far from an expert, but I think a lot of it comes from a long period of time playing/watching the game! Commentators tend to do a good job at pointing out and explaining more intricate gameplay, so a full-fledged analysis can build on that as well.
Hope that helps some! Feel free to shoot me a message on our Community Discord if you want to chat more!

I have never particularly enjoyed watching Hbox, but i have never doubted his skill, it always baffled me when people try to discredit his skill because he plays puff or because they think he's "boring" or " gimmicky" or whatever. The fact that he wins consistently with puff actually always impressed me more.

Already during the breakdown of hbox vs null at 4:58 you say that the only move null could hit with is a f-air which isn’t true, he could’ve also done a n-air or instead of jumping after him, he could’ve wavelanded on the right platform and up-tilt him, of those 3 options I’d say h-box picked the worst one, but all the options there were good options

    highlighter not whiteout.
sounded confusing there a bit lol.
very neat how a playstyle and understanding of a game is more important than just learning character specifics and going to the extreme.
he played safe and perfect, not to get hit but to always play the best. not the best options but the best plays.
playing not to lose, dont get hit.
ironically these things are partially what the old original good players did before anyone could master the techniques they learned.
still the idea 80% mindgame 20% techskill shows.
both sheik and fox are also ironically characters that do that best. makes me think a lot about my sheik and watching other people combo professionally. i should just make the best plays to the bare fundamentals of the game, but i just havent gotten the knowledge of how yet. instead i am worrying about people saying you need combos and technique to win. that doesnt help neutral much at the core point of it. i can learn every option of mind gaming i can but still not utilize the correct play. this confuses me into thinking i should learn every character and how to combo them, rather than just how to beat them.
