My wife and I did a fairly large trip over several weeks in 01 around theme parks and Kings Island with SoB was on our list because of the loop. Still have the picture we took on it. Sad it’s gone for sure.

Fun Fact:
The loop was never responsible for the ride’s roughness. In fact, the loop was actually the smoothest part of the ride, being made of steel rather than wood. The loop was removed because new trains were added and they couldn’t make the loop.
My dad swears he fractured his rib on this thing, and we found out much later that he indeed did

My Dad and my Mum have been on this ride (Still go to Kings Island this summer) And yeah, lots of complaints. One of my parents broke their finger.

My mom suffered multiple bruises after riding Son Of Beast in 2002. She said she’ll never ride it again and she loved roller coasters. Most people I’ve noticed who love roller coasters say that riding son of beast was a one time thing for them and will never ride it again due to how painful the experience was.
I rode SOB twice, back to back and got a headache. Fun, but just too rough .
Sounds like my kinda coaster. The one that you go into knowing “I may be harmed or killed by this ride”. Ultimate thrill! It’s the same reason people come to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Expectation of possible death or disfigurement. I believe that humans need to experience true fear, backed by true risks and act accordingly.
I rode it out 30 times over the course of a few years. It wasn't THAT bad, but it was rough.
Oh yeah I got fucked up on SOB! Seemed smaller girls/women got hurt A LOT!

I got to ride it with the loop, but not after they removed it. It wasn't any worse than the first beast as far as how rough it was. I actually loved it. The line was so long I only rode it once. I really thought it would be there forever because it was so good.
I love the rough rides from wooden roller coasters, and that deafening roar too
This is still my favorite wooden rollercoaster I've ever been on.
Everyone loves to trash this ride for some reason but this was hands down the most untamed coaster of all time, it was insanely fun, even without the loop. I miss it sooo much.

I have been on many different types of roller coasters and I still really like the old wooden ones the best.
@Chris W29 there is just something about SOB that is unmatched by any other woodie. El Toro comes close but SOB is still just slightly more intense
I remember going on this with a friend when it was first opened and finding it very painful. I love roller coasters and the original Beasts is probably my favorite wooden coaster of all time, and I can handle some roughness, but this felt very dangerous at the time. It doesn’t surprise me it had to be taken down.

I kinda wish Son of Beast survived into the RMC era. I love to think about what RMC could've done to the coaster, especially with the vertical loop.

If RMC built Son of Beast he would still be alive today and The Beast would have never had to mourn.
It wasn’t because of a wooden structure, it was rushed and company took short cuts to save money…the engineers made a great ride… 😊
Yeah cus there is a wooden ride at six flags called the wild one. It is not only huge, because it runs through (almost) the entire center of the amusement park, it is also the oldest ride in the park too.
The original contractors backed out mid build so another contractor had to finish the ride. On top of using different outsourced materials then the need to take out the loop made it a headache from day one.

That would be awesome, but the reason this coaster was removed was because the manufacturers didn't create the supports right so RMC wouldn't have been able to use it

that wouldn't work because it would require RMC to make a vertical loop
Got to ride it when I was 10 and 11 before they closed it down, easily one of my favorite coasters of all time

Wooden coasters hurt like hell and for some reason are usually very fast. You’d think they’d tame them a bit. It bumps so hard you come off with a headache and a sore spine. All the while you’re noting the things made of wood and that the metal train tearing across on it is probably slowly breaking it in non visible places.
I love roller coasters but I try not to fuck with the pilgrim ones.

Loved it! Watched it being built, rode with loop and without, took my kids on it and even grandma rode once! It was awesome! Loved standing under it and watch it sway when the train went around upper turn before the big drop. Best ride was in the fog on a full moon night! Never Forget that thrill!
It was amazing. I lived in the town outside of kings island and we went there all the time. But that coaster is the reason my dad has horrible back problems 😢

I live across the river from kings island. Never got to ride son of beast because it was closed before I was old enough but I did get to see it back before they tore it down.

I remember riding the largest wooden roller coaster in the southern hemisphere here in Sydney, Australia called the Bush Beast at Australias Wonderland and it was awesome! The rattling of the train and movement of the track is what made it so good!!

This ride was far better than overrated to death beast and mystic Timbers. The rose bowl was the only really rough part after that it’s slow down so much that it felt like a typical wooden coaster. Loop was spectacular and the first drop felt like coming over a cliff. Felt taller than just 214 feet. The beast before it’s re track was rougher.
Remember my first ride on this.... bruises in places I didn't know could be bruised 😂😂😂

Kings Island does have another wooden coaster now called "Beast", it resembles the original, but less extreme. It is actually pretty smooth for a wood coaster and super fun

If I'm remembering this correctly in the 2009 incident, the roller coaster got stuck at the top of the loop leaving everybody upside down for a few hours while emergency teams were trying to get everybody out.
After that they removed the loop before eventually shutting it down

Renegade is not, however, a wooden _hyper_ coaster the way Son of Beast was. In fact, Renegade is not even 100 feet tall. (Son of Beast was a whopping 218 feet.)
The five tallest wooden roller coasters active today are all either Intamin prefabs or RMC topper track coasters, which are built with _very_ nontraditional methods compared to the Coaster Wars-era woodies--and even the tallest are 30 feet shorter than Son of Beast. For more traditional wooden coasters, the practical limit seems to be around 130 feet tall (The Voyage is just under 160 feet, but it uses a steel substructure, not a wooden one, and is therefore a reverse hybrid).
The current recordholders do, however, seem far more durable than Son of Beast--T Express (tied for the tallest current wooden coaster at 56 meters, or just under 184 feet) is 14 years old and still going last I heard. Son of Beast shut down for good just over 9 years after it opened.

This reminds me of "Excalibur", a large wooden roller coaster that's at Valleyfair in MN. One ride on that thing and every neck muscle feels like it's been pulled from your skull!

I live by kings island, rode this ride when it had the loop. Fun fact for a long time they just bypassed the loop before tearing it down.
Experience was a headache, honestly even as a teenager it was just an awful ride. You rattle so much guaranteed to have a headache at the end if it. First time I rode thought it was justca bad run, second time I knew it was a bad ride.

im from texas, and there’s this rollercoaster at Fiesta Texas called the Iron Rattler, but it used to be called the Rattler maybe 20 years ago, when it was just wooden, and it swayed as the roller coaster was riding. thank god its reenforced by iron now.
