Thanks for this overview of the Technics SL-6. I found mine at my local Goodwill store about 10 years ago. It was around $20.00. What caught my eye was that it was a Direct Drive Technics and it was surprisingly quite heavy. It was in excellent condition and still plays wonderfully well to this day. I had no idea they are going for so much money nowadays. I should upgrade the cartridge and stylus as well. At the very least, get a replacement stylus.

I'm an original owner of an SL-6. I saved up for it back in the early 80's. Thus, I have not been able to part with it 40+ years later. I recently had it serviced as opposed to purchasing something new. Also added a new replacement stylus for the worn-out Pickering. Thanks for sharing the video!
Those cartridges are really good, I wouldn’t replace it. I would just get a new stylus for it. Lots of choices, as many of those Technics P-mounts are interchangeable (P22, P23, P24, P202, etc). I just ordered a Thakker “Nudeline” nude elliptical for the EPC-P24 on my SL-6.
Nice find and I’m trying to find the best one from these 80’s technics compact linear turntables. I just ordered the Sony PS-Q3 and it only covers 30% of the record and it was Sony’s answer to Technics, when they came out with the SL-10. Also, I had the Technics SL-5 and loved that machine! I’m just wondering when they came out with the Technics quarts models, if they came out before or after bc I see many that have the quartz (Q)like for instance SL-q5. Also, I wish they had those electronic resell store they javelin Japan here in the US. I also had this model with the half shade out like this one, but only had a few buttons on the front, but made by technics and from this aeries back in 1995 and thought it was the coolest tt I’ve ever seen.
Looks like you got the vintage audio collecting bug and I’m the same way since 96 and keep buying more stuff o don’t need but want in my collection. Lots of stiff out there from the past that’s cool and like buying a new record. Lol!
Is there a version with the half plastics is blacked out like this one, but with less controls on the front. Bc I had this turntable, but didn’t have all the buttons on the front. Yeah, not sure if the numbers go with the different model year or if the had the 5 and 6 at the same year or different year. I once saw the technics tt lost of models and will look it out.
If you buy one of these that’s not working but turns on, are they still worth buying and easy to fix? The one I’m looking at has a regular regular rubber mat without the center cutout for the 45 spindle. Looks like the one I’m looking at had the mat replace and I saw another one listed with the same solid rubber mat. So I’m not sure if they made 2 models or if the mat was replaced. I’m asking bc I’m wondering if the 45 spindle unit thing will still work and under the mat and if not, easy to replace. Yeah, these are solid tts and very advance for something made in 82. If a tt was made with the same technology and quality now, it would cost over a thousand .
I have the SL-5. The tone arm is inconsistent in starting at the right location at the beginning of the record. When it does find the start correctly, it will, invariably, start skipping badly at some point on every record. The cartridge is brand new! Can you HELP?

Sounds like you might a problem with the control panel. Try cleaning out the contacts. These also have problems with capacitors. You might need to replace any leaking caps that you can catch! Thanks for watching!

Yes. They use what's called the P-mount, and it's just a matter of pulling the old one off and pushing the new one in. Audio Technica makes them, possibly others, but I don't know if that's the case.
The Technics-made cartridge that came on these tables from the factory is no slouch, and can be upgraded. You can get everything from a cheap conical to a basic elliptical, hyperelliptical, line contact/Shibata, or even the JICO SAS stylus. Get the best you can afford for the best sound. I would say the JICO SAS is overkill for this table, not mention it's a few Franklins. Now, if you land an SL-10...

Got a serviced J33, also programable. New tone arm belt, old grease cleaned out & new stylus. Plays nice

The technics SL-10 is a real beauty and I think the best of this series and the most expensive.

It’s like a cd player bc you can program and skip tracks.

You might need to replace the tone are belt in the lid or lube the rail and gear. That might help!
