"No one's left. Everything's gone. Kharak is burning." This was the first time a game ever made me cry. To this day, those eight simple words will tear me up.
If someone doesn't have an emotional reaction, clearly they didn't read the manual while the installer ran, which would have gotten them engrossed in the history and culture of the noble people of Kharak. That manual was one of the best pieces of storytelling ever created for a game, and that downtime during install was a perfect time to prompt most of us who actually want to enjoy games to read the manual.
Is it bad that, having not played this game in 5 years, I still heard the opening to this and remembered: "No-one's left... everything's gone... Kharak is burning..." "Kharak is being consumed by a firestorm. The scaffold has been destroyed. All orbital facilities destroyed. Significant debris ring in low Kharak orbit. Receiving no communication from anywhere in the system... not even beacons." Amazing what memories can bring, eh? Used to love running home from school to play some Homeworld.
I remember this song on the final mission and hearing "Another fleet is coming out of hyperspace right on top of us. We are being overwhelmed." then you here this "This is Captain Elson we've been battling reinforcement fleets to get here and we've lost many ships already. The Emperor's flagship is here together we can defeat him and the Taiidan Fleet. I am placing squadrons Cor and Jesah under your command."
No matter how good the modern-day games get, Homeworld will remain a legend in my memories forever. An epic gameplay and emotional plot that has and will never have a parallel!
If Homeworld was a movie this would play over a slow motion montage of all the crew members either crying in the hall way screaming in anger or silently looking upon there burning home. With a close up of Karens face as a tear runs down it.
they won't be cryint c'mon man that'd be pathetic...they'd rather clench their fists and swear to find the home of their ancestors and make the bastards pay every step of the way...this is much like battlestar galactica (the show which inspired homeworld)
+Avenger85438 Actually. Battlestar and Homeworld has a weird influence on one another. The Original Battlestar had some elements present (to my knowledge) that is also in Homeworld, so some things were carried over either by coincidence or choice. But the reboot of BSG, which has a LOT more similarities, came out in 2003. Meaning that the reboot of BSG. took more inspiration from HW. than the original battlestar Galactica ever gave HW.
or also..a montage of scenes depicting the destruction and desperation that took place on the surface while it was being annhilated.. as seen through the imagination of one or more(some of them wretching no doubt.) of the surviving crew members, as the gaze down on the remains of the only world they've ever known. it closes with radiation screens slowly coming down over the viewing portals to obscure the horrific sight from further view...
From a filmmaker standpoint at about 2:58 to 4:15 id imagine theyd just found out about the cryo trays and desperately try to save them. With a montage of different shots. Ships fighting, crashing, exploding, losing two cryo trays. All while completely silent and letting this music tell the story.
Alway I hear the song Adagio for Strings, I always remember that part, when you return to Kharak, and everything is destroyed. Took more than 6 years without playing that game, but I remember very well each and every one of the more emotional parts. Homeworld forever..... Kharak
and the next cutscene goes... "From the interrogation we learned that a frontier fleet patrolling the border of a vast interstellar empire was dispatched to destroy our planet. The captain claimed that we violated the 4000 year old treaty forbidding us to develop hyperspace technology. Extermination of our planet was the consequence. The subject did not survive the interrogation..." I never before found myself this satisfied about brutal execution of POW in any fiction.
Honestly, if I blew up somebody's entire planet with 99% of their population, I'd be damn grateful if all they wanted to to do was briefly torture and kill me.
"Picking a hyperspace signature right above us! We are being overwhelmed!" ... "This is Captain Elson, We've been fighting reinforcement fleets to get here and lost many ships already. The emperor is here. Together we CAN do this" I came
I uploaded it as Tears of Karan because that's how it appeared on the community soundtrack. Since I uploaded all the tracks of the community soundtrack, I decided to keep it internally consistent, even if it's not technically right. I hope that makes sense.
@ScoutZugZug They managed to take one of the saddest songs and make a slower choral version that's even more moving. I can't hear this with out seeing a world burn.
@skaterkid901 and as i read your quotes i can still hear it with the voice from the game. truly a memorable, by far my favorite space RTS. would love to see an other Homeworld game, then again it wouldn't be easy to make an other game that could make justice to homeworld2.
Technically it's Agnus Dei, the choral arrangement for Adagio for Strings (both by Samuel Barber). Also, the song is not called "Tears of Karan" on the sound track. It's titled Adagio for Strings (should be Agnus Dei). Then again, Sierra was sued for using it without permission if I recall correctly.
I did something similar, i also made sure i captured all the frigates as well, 3 reasons why... 1. when they were captured i imagined a painful and just punishment. 2. they would be used ironically to help me annihilate Taiidan. 3. The Taiidan would also ironically destroy there own ships. Karma is a bitch. Finally this song was so fitting, it made me sad, but in a way it worked with the story. Long live Homeworld!
Louie Jake during the previous Mission I captured quite a bit of enemy ships. I had enough ships to create a defense net as well as enough salvage corvettes to move more pods at a time.
I cannot wait to replay this game in the HD Remaster in January, mostly just for this scene. If the world was to end tomorrow, I would play this on repeat until the end - it will always be the song of sorrow for the mass genocide of an entire planet.
@Nathan890ify You need at least 2 scout, 2 salvage corvette and a repair corvette. The trick is you need to distract the attacking assault frigate. Send a the scout on evasive and use their special ability speed burst (button Z). when the assault frigate is engaging the scout. Send the repair corvette to repair the cryo tray that is under attack and your salvage corvette to capture the assault frigate first. Once all are captured then you get the cryo's. I got it all on my first play through. :)
Shame on me for thinking this was "first time seeing the Halo" I remember the silent urgent fury as I raced to gather the remaining cryopods, under attack, and with the burning world as the skybox. I recalled coldly wanting NPC blood. Parsecs of it. It is a thing I miss in these days of Console Easy Button- these sort of emotional strings just dont get twanged anymore.
@skaterkid901 i still get shivers down my spine, even when just reading this combined with the music :O. this game was sooo awesome! im really sad it went away, although it never gave anyone a chance to screw it up so it might be better this way. best 2 games ever.
cataclysm was bad quality? You mean - graphics? The H: Cataclysm was as first Homeworld game GENIUS. These series has so much potential - sound, graphics, gameplay, story - everything perfect. The game(s) of my youth....
Specifically, called the 'Angus Dei', which translated as 'Lamb of God' I think. (I can't speak Latin, nor am I religious, so I can't confirm). The arrangement was made in the 70s I belive, and I think that the original piece was written in 1936. I'll have to check up on that.
@Nathan890ify And don't worry abt u'r scout. most times when I played both survive. Frigate are not meant to fight fighter remember. don't bother sending u'r light or heavy corvette to engage them as they'll just be shredded to pieces. Guess reading the the guide book that come with the CD does help here. :). just remember don't stop distracting them with your scout while you are capturing them or else they will attack your salvage corvette instead. And yes this song and HW is d greatest ever.
At first you don't know what happened, ergo don't care about it, But as time pass, you will search the lore up... read about them. Get to know about all those people. Please god just have mercy for the Exiles.
on mission 13 or 14 i think where you have to blow up the hyperspace inhibitor to get to the homeworld. Ya i think i converted every ion frigate on that level, took go awful forever but what are they going to do when i have 130 ion frigates :D

This was the first time a game ever made me cry. To this day, those eight simple words will tear me up.
"it must be the emperor friend, I can feel his minions' dark corruption when destroying kharah"
+Not A Particularly Remarkable Brick you sure aren't particularly remarkable, as seen from that statement
it was a particularly unremarkable statement

This is exactly why the song is still on my relaxation playlist. Can't help but get the feels still 2 decades later...

kharak.. is burning...
I've seen many renditions of Adagio. None touch me like this one, though.
"We are away."
There is nothing left for us here...
'Sigh' Let's go...

There are thousands of people on the Mothership chances are some would cry.

Avenger85438 some would completely lose their shit.

Homeworld forever..... Kharak
REMASTERD!!!
IT. IS. HAPPENING.
dude, homeworld's been with me for freaking EVER! it's not just an awesome Space RTS, it's possibly the most beautiful sci fi story ever told
If they ever make it into show, they need at least one episode for mission in the game. A movie format won't work for the Homeworld Franchise.
and the next cutscene goes...
"From the interrogation we learned that a frontier fleet patrolling the border of a vast interstellar empire was dispatched to destroy our planet.

There's also a certain cutscene in the expansion pack sequel Cataclysm/Emergence.
Taiidans: It was just a prank bro chill
ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
The subject did not survive the interrogation.
Prank? *I don't think so.*
"Picking a hyperspace signature right above us! We are being overwhelmed!"

ALL THE FEELS

Every time I hear this song, I remember watching kharak burn. Gaming's most emotional tear-jerker.
Only game that ever brought a tear to my eye. And it was this moment at the start.
@ScoutZugZug They managed to take one of the saddest songs and make a slower choral version that's even more moving. I can't hear this with out seeing a world burn.
chills down my spine every time
One of my best games, I will never forget about it.
Great moment hearing this song on the final mission
Wow, this really is just a choral adagio for strings.
@skaterkid901 and as i read your quotes i can still hear it with the voice from the game. truly a memorable, by far my favorite space RTS. would love to see an other Homeworld game, then again it wouldn't be easy to make an other game that could make justice to homeworld2.

its an amazing game, and has yet to be topped in terms of space rts in my opinion
The actual name of the track is "Adagio for Strings".
You just can't fault Barber's Adagio for Strings
I did something similar, i also made sure i captured all the frigates as well, 3 reasons why...

Long live Homeworld!
This game could've just been a good space RTS, instead they made it a space RTS masterpiece
Saved all the cryo pads :D
how?
Louie Jake during the previous Mission I captured quite a bit of enemy ships. I had enough ships to create a defense net as well as enough salvage corvettes to move more pods at a time.

Adagio for strings, Samuel Barber's
Oh wow remaster? I wonder if the guide I wrote way back in 2001 still applies (it is on gamefaqs under the name fallon)
Ken Morgan It will. They've simply upped the graphics for modern PCs. It'll be the exact same games.
Aaron Brudenell Plus they've added multiplayer ^^
Vartrex5
there was multiplayer in the original
Agnus Dei is the most beautfiul piece of music ever heard.
Not even beacons...

@behindyoufool i could vote this up a hundred times, and it would still not be enough.
@skaterkid901 i still get shivers down my spine, even when just reading this combined with the music :O. this game was sooo awesome! im really sad it went away, although it never gave anyone a chance to screw it up so it might be better this way.
best 2 games ever.
Terlalu senang rasanya sampai sudah selesai begitu. Asni, lu bagaimana di PURNAMA situ. Beta kedua betul ??!?.
Indeed!
cataclysm was bad quality? You mean - graphics? The H: Cataclysm was as first Homeworld game GENIUS. These series has so much potential - sound, graphics, gameplay, story - everything perfect. The game(s) of my youth....

I've tried this again and again but have never managed to get them all. There's always a big cluster of them that retreat beyond the map boundaries.
@Nathan890ify And don't worry abt u'r scout. most times when I played both survive. My ringtone
i did EXACTLY the same! lol
some of the ion frigs were still alive even at the end of the game.
Oh, hey, tears in my coffee.
@SNoRRo
Yes, the original is Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.
Same. I even went back to mission 2, retired all my fighters and built nothing but salvage corvets in an attempt to save the 6th cyrotray. Failed :_:
I did it. So much cheese but it can be done. You need exactly eight corvettes and a small pack of scouts. More corvettes and too many frigates spawn.
At first you don't know what happened, ergo don't care about it, But as time pass, you will search the lore up... read about them. Get to know about all those people. Please god just have mercy for the Exiles.
it was the year 1999
:,,D
oh my god I know! it's so sad!
Woe to those who failed to rescue that sixth cryo tray.
(Now, where's that meme of suffering that plays this on the background?)
i hope that there is going to be a homeworld 3 =D
on mission 13 or 14 i think where you have to blow up the hyperspace inhibitor to get to the homeworld. Ya i think i converted every ion frigate on that level, took go awful forever but what are they going to do when i have 130 ion frigates :D
yh could have been i had a bad quality download but the story and gameplay were gud :)
AGNUS DEI
classic music
@behindyoufool I got them all eventually. The trick is you have to build a bunch of Salvage corvest the level before.
THQ is gone and with it the Homeworld Franchise, yet there are some trying to save the proyect: savehomeworld com do it for Kharak
nope, the original comes from Agnus Dei, 'tis mostly used as a Requiem song (AKA funeral music)
It is possible. I've done it a few times, although it's funny how Karen doesn't mention it.
and endlessly mod-able
You can feel the feels
Former Homeworld Developers Are Making A New Sci-Fi Game name:"Hardware" maybe someone had survive firestorm on Kharak
the first game was the best cataclysm was kinda bad quality and homeworld 2 was good again + good quality Yay for sierra =D
If North Korea ever goes bat shit and snaps, I'm playing this song, LOUD
@skaterkid901
I used to love skipping school to play it xD
JK. Ya i know how well it brings back memories... aaah those days
whoever gave the thumbs down to this video must be deaf
