I rewatched this a second time and something mikey says *REALLY* stands out to me now that I'm done oggling over his fantastic work. "Don't worry if your hand eye coordination doesn't get the lines exactly where you want them to at first. Practice makes perfect" This is so incredibly true, one of the biggest issues I had when watching mikey's earlier videos I'd get infuriated because my lines would always be.. fuzzy in comparison to his when I'd try to follow along. and about a year and some change later I'm realizing how much less fuzzy it is in comparison to the beginning. DO NOT LET FUZZY LINES STOP YOU AS THEY DID ME
Be in control of ur pencil. If you cant do this you might not shade well and your lines will suck. Practicing sketching can help but idk for others. Just practice i guess :v
@@lolgetrekt2848 revisiting this almost a year later has hammered in this point all the more. It is 110% practice. You *will* suck at first. You *will* improve even if its just 15 seconds a day of stroking the same line over and over. The practice makes you improve as time goes on.
Mikey: "Make sure you've got a rubber on you as well in order to avoid mistakes all the kind of long-term mistakes are gonna kick in about nine months later. " 😂😂
riptiger69 It's not a specific tutorial but an artist called Kienan Lafferty has a great explanation for how to shade tights and stuff like that in his videos where he draws that kind of stuff. I would highly recommend his channel.
Usually art videos are bad, but I think this one actually helped. Thanks man, I’ve developed my method of no paper underneath, shaky line syndrome, and almost every other bad thing except for the shading. And overall I’ve learned a lot. Good job for having the best art video I have found in RUclips so far.
really nicely done. i am "old school" as in pencil and paper, no fancy digital stuff, i will scan it in to clean up and post, but that's about it. I do like the unlimited "undo" that digital gives you but for now i will stick with what i have. i appreciate the time and effort you go through to post these videos, Thank you. --Rick
Same. I prefer the feeling of the papers friction than the smooth glass screen. But I wish there was an undo button on paper every now and then though lol.
@@Lakjager AGREED! i will scan it into the comp and use GIMP to add color and clean up but the advantage to paper and pencil is you can create art by candle light if the power goes out, not so much with digital.
This is a great beginner Tutorial. I’m working atm in a child care, and i have a lot of children interested in sketching and this video will help me a lot.
I always loved your tutorials. Have you considered creating a full course? Maybe in a place like Skillshare or Udemy? The problem with RUclips tutorials is that there is no structure. You don't know which video watch first and which to look immediately afterwards, so you end up quitting out of sheer confusion.
Plenty of practice with pencils make for smooth lines. I also like how you emphasize the simplest tools are the most effective; the pencil really is one of the best and basic tools for drawing. Good work, Mikey.
Yaaasssss! Old school Mikey we all fell in love with 🔥🔥🔥 I remember the soft shapes tips and at first I couldn’t do it (at the time of your videos) but now I do it every time I start a drawing, so thanks a lot 🙌 Let’s hope you’ll see this
Excellent tutorial. Allow me to thank you for the tip about the multiple sheets of paper under your primary drawing sheet. It really does make a difference. I appreciate the small procedural tips you give that people might not think of, but can help your workflow.
I dont have an anime style of drawing but I just love learning new things from you. The techniques you use are good for all styles of drawing. Thank you!
I really enjoy your work and the effort you put into each art work. The way you talk and explain things really helps as they are clear and easy to understand and follow. :)
Wow this help me a lot about shadings and how to use pencil to draw... And..... Hi!, i've been noticing that you're just drawing lots of anime girls and it's helping me a big time since i started to subscribe to your channel uhmm.. Well yeah i wanted to say thank you! 😉 But i also want to learn about anime boys body i'm struggling to draw their body muscles, like normal body to muscular body.. Since in this tutorial you said if we were going to ask what's we're going to learn next.. Maybe that.. Anime boy body. 😊
I think this is the first comment I ave seen asking him to go in the opposite direction. I agree, and I have tried taking his basics video to try to tone the over all look down a bit... No as easy as it would seem on the surface.
But the basics remain the same, yall too distracted by the final product ( which is actually the least important part). The construction, building blocks, anatomy, proportions are the MOST important part and remain the same regardless if its SFW or NSFW. Focus on these parts ( which are at the begining of each video, before all the details) and you can go as lewd or as wholesome as you want. This video is an example the shading techniques are useful everywhere.
Hey Mikey... long time no watch. But I checked this one out after a long time of M.I.A.... I do draw a lot, and yet I love watching things like this over and over. I still suck at drawing people. It has gotten better, but I am on the fools errand of getting it acceptable for myself eventually. I really have an iss with coming up with things out of my head when it comes to people. I can do it with scenes of a room, or some sort of machine, but people and even character design has always been a struggle for me for some odd reason. I have missed thisvstyle of video from you, but looks like you have been doing really well for yourself, and I'm glad. Keep up thr awesome job.
I solely work with these mechanical pencils, for pencilwork ^^ they're perfect & clean for drafting, & have just enough tone diversity for what I want. Fine art pencils are just things I'd only have time for with some genuine, hella-good painterly stuff.
After several types of tests, including LITERALLY TRACING (not for credit, for a test), I can safely conclude that it's not my terrible drawing skills, pencil, or references that are the problem, but it's the PAPER. Man, I *told* my mom not to buy this one :(

Rubber = how it feels
Eraser = how it works
WRONG... it doesn't erase. It absorbs. It should be named rubber that absorbs graphite and flakes off while in use.

I don't use another piece of paper anymore, I started using the glove you get along with a graphic tablet, this works pretty good for me
It works pretty well to avoid getting oil and sweat on the paper but it still picks up the graphite and smudges my paper...
