I got to fly on one of the blimps 20 years ago. I asked the pilot how he started. He was a helicopter pilot in Desert Storm and when he got out he went home to Akron and was making tires at the Goodyear plant. He saw the posting for a blimp pilot while at lunch and Shazam!!!
The most american thing i have ever heared dessert storm helicopter pilot went home and got a job at a tire factory and became a blimp pilot for nascar lol.
Id do this for free for life if I could. I do not know what my fascination with blimps is but this is awesome. The fact it's been around now for a full century is more than enough to impressive and inspire. What a job!
What does it take? Only answer you gave: “pilots are trained for 6mo-1yr”. Actual answer: you will never fly the blimp regardless if your license. The pilots choose their students, and rarely at that.
This blimp hasn't been flying for 100 years, it's been for less. Like 10-20 years. These blimps are retired after a certain amount of time due to the material either stretching to much or having multiple patches.
@@abacaxifamily Not exactly, they werent running in WII or even after. There was a long stopping point for the good year blimp due to materials maintenance and so on. But they did make target blimps for the US military.

Fun Facts: While the Good Year Blimp is called a Blimp. It’s an Airship and not a Blimp. The difference is in a Blimp, it has a non rigid balloon holding the helium vs Airship is a Rigid structure that holds the Helium. Airships don’t fly or hover. They float just like a party balloon. This is what is know as lighter than air flight though the flight part is a misnomer. It’s always floating. It uses directional turbines to move around.
we need to recover blimps, Hindenburg was just an unfortunate mistake, nowadays we could add oxygen sensors and ways to eliminate any possible oxygen inside, so the Hydrogen would be safe.
I have actually met one of the pilots in this video. Those people have a really great job and we got to watch the airship be filled with helium. Really cool.
I saw a Goodyear blimp once in Germany, an hour later the news broke that it crashed and the pilot died, but he managed to save the three passengers lives who were on board

I remember seeing this blimp when I was a little kid at elementary school in Northern VA. This mustve been in the very early 2000s, I totally forgot about this memory until I saw this
You lied.. the Pilgrim which was the name of the first Goodyear blimp was launched in 1925. Quit looking at the wiki page for the Goodyear Blimp and seeing 1918, which was the first Navy blimp. Goodyear Blimps have their own designation called the Goodyear Type AD. Class C Blimps, designated in 1918 were used by the US Navy only.
This is kind of cool I just stumbled across the short because I live in Florida in the St. Lucie County area and I see the good year blimp come over all the time and I think it’s really cool and I just now found out that it’s $21 million👍🏻
I never knew the footage was filmed from the blimps always thought the blimp just flew over for advertisement and just because it's awsome I use to see it flying up and down coast from Hampton Beach to cape cod once in wile and planes with adds on them back in 80s erly 90s
No point of using a drone when you can use a $500,000 camera attached to a $21 million dollar blimp.
The free advertisement for Goodyear worth a lot more then it cost.
@@johnl.7754 it is not free.

It's a billboard for Goodyear for big events...same concept as someone flying a banner over a college football game. Camera angles is just a bonus.
The Goodyear logo on a tiny drone doesn't have the same impact.

It was the coolest thing in the world seeing it fly over as a kid and I'm pretty sure I'd still be just as astonished as an adult

I thought the Goodyear Blimp wasn't flying so this was surprising to see.
This footage is from a 2019 Video by Business Insider, only with a new Voiceover.
I've seen it fly over Maricopa AZ. Some people didn't even know what it was. This was summer of 2021
It's slow. But that does NOT mean easy, you still have to think ahead and know -when- to do something in reaction.
I see it all the time driving home from work in LA
There are 3 of them flying right now
What does it take?

Well there’s another story here about a good year pilot seeing an ad about it so I know you definitely just guessed that

The funny thing about Blimps, is that they themselves don't actually fly, they actually just make the whole world decrease it's altitude.

The Goodyear blimp is in my hometown of pompano beach Florida and sometimes you see the blimp flying around Broward county Florida.

Saw the good year blimp flying to a Steelers game while I was doing flight lessons.
$20 million of that money is the helium itself. 😂
100 years and still has a big boom win win :)
Flying advertisement 💯 about as eye catching as it gets
i was today years old when i realized that the good year blimp served a purpose other than advertising
My uncle worked for Goodyear for a few years and he went all over the country
Damn, trained from 6 months to a year?? Those are some young pilots
this blimp flew over my school on the last day and I'm not even kidding
seems simple enough, they got the PFD and the things that planes have in their cockpit
I like how even the controller is outfitted with carbon fiber 🤣
I used to watch the blimp park every week growing up in Pompano Florida always wanting to ride in it
"even saw the lights on the Goodyear blimp, and it read "Ice Cube's a pimp!"
