    One tip to make sure you’re eating pantry items: Write the expiration date (large/bold) in Sharpie on the label facing forward. I started doing this last year, and it’s made a huge difference. Another helpful and satisfying video.

      Genius!!!

    • @jeannesutter4951

      Expiration dates don't mean that the food is unsafe to eat. With canned items, obvs look for bulging or bad dents, that could mean that the food is unsafe. But dried goods and sealed cans should be just fine well past the date.

    • @tobeytravels893
      @tobeytravels893 2 года назад +8

      Good point. Still a good idea to know the expiration date as a reminder to eat it.

  • @Iluvchknz
    @Iluvchknz 2 года назад +3

    Shelf stable food is good well past those sell by or best by dates. The USDA says that canned goods that are in good condition can be safe to eat indefinitely. These dates are NOT expiration dates. The only thing legally obligated to have an expiration date on it is actually baby formula. Use your nose to determine if things are bad. You are throwing away good money. Things like milk are often good for a couple of weeks past the sell by date on the carton.

Btw you can put all veggies that have roots in water (e.g. leek, celery), some even re-grow 🤗 I have several mint plants hanging at my wall they are good for fresh air as well

I don't keep lettuce or veggies that go bad quickly in the crisper any longer, I know that's what they are designed for but I'm a "out of sight out of mind" kind of girl, I use them to store canned soft drinks and keep some of my produce on one of the shelves.

    I want a good heavy Dutch oven so badly but I've got teens who cook rather rough and a glass stove top and I can see them breaking the stovetop so fast the way they bang around 😭
    That's really too bad that the zero waste store closed! I guess the price of everything is going up so maybe they were struggling to be competitive with better packaging, but darn I remember when I was a kid and stores had bulk bins for dozens and dozens of things, now everything comes triple wrapped in plastic, even things like fruit coming in plastic bags where when I was a kid they came in reusable little wooden crates... My grandma had a huge shelf for all the empty jars and little baskets and would then use them for plants or the garden or preserving things etc Our poor planet 🌎

    Carla!! No, please don’t put your tomatoes in the fridge. 😢 It changes the flavor profile, fructose content and is not ideal storage. They should be stored at room temperature. I would also store my onions at room temp as well. Because I do. Haha Okay, I’m going to continue watching now. I will provide a link for anyone that doubts this tomato knowledge. As an undergrad, I was lucky to have worked for a tomato breeder/geneticist, and probably know too much about tomatoes. lol

    • @TheCarlaProject
      @TheCarlaProject  2 года назад +2

      Lol where do I put them? I used to keep them in the basket on pantry shelf with other veggies but then it seems like they would make the other veggies go bad faster. My kitchen gets so hot because the vintage stove gives off a lot of heat. I do eat them pretty quickly usually 😬

    • @mandyjb77
      @mandyjb77 2 года назад

      @@TheCarlaProject Hmm, yeah, I understand the limitations. I have a basket on my wall since I’m short on counter space myself. But, for tomatoes…they tend to be pretty, just leave a couple out on your counter, and away from the stove maybe. 😉 🤔

    Also, I didn’t think it was a good idea to store eggs in an open crate. Apparently eggs easily absorb odors from the fridge and can alter their taste. I do think your egg tray is super cute though.
