I watched this as a still in the closet gay teenager when I was 16. I was literally bursting to come out, but still too scared of the bullying at school and the reaction from society in general. I knew when I saw the adverts that it would be something I couldn't miss, and I actually recorded the sound from the film on cassette from the small TV in my bedroom. I couldn't risk trying to use the family video recorder. Seems strange now, but this was before the internet and I had no other access to media like this, no other way of experiencing it again. I listened to that soundtrack over and over again, it represented my repression, and the love that I so desperately wanted to have but at that time it seemed so far away. I even remember wearing a red t-shirt (as in the shot above) the next day, so that maybe the other gay boys in my school would recognise the significance. Of course it didn't work and I didn't get a boyfriend until I was 19 and I'd come out. How glad I am that gay kids nowadays can have that entirely normal period of starting to have relationships when they are 16, when you're full of hormones and so desperately want a relationship. Even though I'm nearly 40 now, I can still vividly remember that desperate teenager recording this film on cassette and wishing his life was different - those years building up the courage to come out were long years...
Thank you for sharing your experience. Mine was quite similar. Remembering the movie I think it was a part of me understanding and seeing gay romance for the first time. And a caring, sympathising mother. Old times, long gone. I am seeing this through the pink glasses, pun intended, I guess but I miss this time. How simple things were back then. How healthy my body was.
Aww, thank you for sharing. Touching story and beautiful nuance with the t-shirt 🙏💖 This movie along with the videoclips of Katy Perry - Firework and Kylie Minogue - All the lovers that same year helped me come out. It was scary but oh my god, what a wonderful path of truth it's gotten me through. Life is beautiful. Love from a gay brother.
I can speak a little english but i rather say this in spanish Me encantó tu cometnrario, tu historia, la forma en la que la contaste, las palabras que escogiste, pude sentir cada palabra y ese sentimiento de nostalgia y alegría por las nuevas generaciones. This film is also very especial for me, one of the first queer films i ever watched. It Will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for sharing!
This sounds sad and melancholic but at the same time sweet and lovely. It makes me imagine a scene with the mixture of these feelings. Love it. It's soo beautiful... suits perfectly to this beautiful movie
I don’t remember how I came across this movie back in the late 90s, but I’m glad I did. I first watched it on vhs. Now I have the dvd and a digital copy of it. It’s such a touching story, brings back many memories and emotions. Still like to watch it from time to time. Scott (Ste) is on Instagram these days, but not sure what Glenn (Jamie) has been up too. Hope he’s well. They were great casts for this movie. Thanks for the theme music, it makes me want to watch the movie again.
For me, thanks to the tv show LOST. Its season 2 opening 'Make your own kind of music' has made me search for it on youtube that led me to these 2 lads. From then on, i have watched Beautiful Thing countless times!
This song, and movie, had a profound impact on my life growing up as a teenager in 1996. It's amazing to see how it had the same effect on so many others. The perfect movie for anyone feeling low about themselves, gay or straight! It's life affirming.
I too was a teenager as I was 16 the year the film was released but I didn't see it until my 20s when I bought the DVD, but unfortunately it hasn't helped me come out, despite watching it 10 times over many months. However, I love this medley, the music is serene and is indeed a beautiful thing.
"Beautiful Thing" is one of the first movies I saw right after I came out. So sweet, touching, captivating... Listening to this song evokes some memories about that time... Please, apologize my rude English. Thank you for sharing it, @xJusteBx!
Oscars are not a joke! This movie and the videos edited from it are wonderful and have made me want to view the DVDs that I collect with greater care and analysis.
I write novels and drama. I have fantasized about hiring the entire cast of Beautiful Thing to bring my work to life. I would hope that they still live and would be available and willing to bring their skills, love, And ethos to my creation...That would be a dream come true! .
RE: the music of the late great C A S S E L L I O T T One of the reasons I loved this movie is because of the solo music of singer Cass Elliott whom was taken form us at too early an age. Her songs in the movie were ones she sung for inspiration and love. She had a huge gay fan following before all the Disco Divas and her songs spoke to the hearts of gay closeted kids and teens and to all teens that felt unloved and unwanted or outcast, even The Hippies dug her music. One of her songs was written for her to sing in a children's movie called: "Different" which is on youtube Cass loved that song so much for her fans that she covered it on her solo album as well. The song is on youtube under "Cass Elliott + Different + w/lyrics"" her songs like "You Got to Make Your Own Kind of Music" and others were such great inspirational songs.
I wish they would make a sequel. I saw it when it first came out and I have watched it so many times. I would love to know how life turned out for Jamie and Ste and the other characters.
I think, for a lot of us who were around Jamie & Ste's age at the time it was released, this film holds a special place in our hearts. For me, it was the first time I had ever seen young gay love depicted on screen and the relationship that forms between the two boys was literally everything my young tender teenage heart had been dreaming of. This will always have a place at the top my list of favorite LGBTIQ+ movies, as I'm sure it does for many of you.
Thank you to all involved with this beautiful movie. It is entertaining . The. production is such that despite small problems one can still get a lot of pleasures out of it.
This movie... I'm not quite sure how I came across it, but I'm so glad I did. This brings back sweet memories, and I feel like watching the movie again. Thanks for posting this here :)
I coyly went into an arthouse movie theater in Melbourne to see this when it came out and then rented the VHS, bought the soundtrack when it came out. Wildly progressive, touching movie. The mother, the crazy black girl next door, the mother's loser boyfriend..wonderful characters and brilliantly acted. Watching this at the same age as the characters in the movie and actually going to The Body Shop to buy the peppermint foot lotion 😅
This song will be FOREVER in my heart, as well as the movie and the whole cast. I LOVE IT!!!! is there anyone knows Jamie's (glen berry) or Ste's (Scott Neal) facebook or twitter or their official website. I wonder how's their life now. Hopefully they're live happy and full of love.
I loooooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeee this medley omg.....this make me wanna ....hug and love everything.....and it make me think about life after happyness with another person...find love dat resemble theres...i wish i waz one of those boys

@jonjonsboy You were afraid you'd never find it? It's on the offiical soundtrack for the film, which has been available on CD for a number of years now. Did you not check that?

I was 8 when this movie come out but I think I saw it 15 years later for the first time, great movie
I just found this music but it's one of my favorite movies. This story, this music and these actors changed my life as a young gay man.
@@downtown82 I was a adult when I saw this movie but it would of helped me coming out

@@andrewredfern8811 I'm sorry to hear that I come out at 17 years old it's the hardest thing to do.
This is my favorite LGBT movie. Even with all the new ones this is still my favorite
Ale ....my favorite movie!!...and "Go Astros".....love Alex, George, Garritt, and Altuve 🤗❤💜🧡💛💚💙👬
For me God's Own Country just pips it, but I still think Priscilla is still pretty much unbeatable. x
Because it’s outstanding and was even more important in the 90s ❤️
It’s for sure one of my favorites too!! ❤️
Being a 20s gay teen, this still gives me a lot of emotions. feel so disappointed when hearing Glen Berry not acting anymore.. :(

very touching song and story. i love it. more power!!!
The "GONE WITH THE WIND" of alternative cinema-- a classic!!-- Should have had an Oscar, but Oscars are a joke anyway

Wonderful movie! Such a realistic picture what teenage gay boys go through but with a happy twist.
This is my go-to movie every time I feel down. The story, the music, location, and the characters all perfectly blend together.
This movie did help me a lot with accepting being gay. Really glad I watched it...
